I had the pleasure of meeting her after her performance in Sweeny Todd in 1976. The stagehand took me up to her dressing room. She came out in her robe, her wig was off and I was a bit taken aback. I remember standing before her and I am 5'7 and had to look up to her. She had the largest blue eyes! Most importantly, she grabbed my hand and asked me how I liked the show. She was so gracious and down to earth. I never expected to meet her when I went into the show. Simply marvelous!

Today, is the sad, special, gloomy but festive day as well! Oct 11 '22. R I P Dame Angela Lansbury !!!! Your legacy is immense! Career for 10 lives! Posa in pace, signora. 🌙🌹🌟👑
Yep, me too. I was… 9? 10? Don‘t remember exactly. My first exposure to Angela Lansbury, I loved that film ever since. Even today, like now when the days get shorter, I sometimes watch it on a rainy afternoon. Great memories of our old movie theater, all the Disney re-releases back in the day, and the accompanying shorts befor the actual feature film.
Her daughter was in with the Manson gang. Dame Angela rescued both her children by moving to Ireland. It wasn't a topic she talked about.I was surprised that she answered Cavett's questions as honestly as she did. Barbara Walters sandbagged her by asking her about the move in her interview in 1985. It had been previously agreed that Barbara wouldn't ask about Angela's kids' problems.
Thank you for elaborating! I was so curious as to what her kids got into that she moved them to Ireland. Fascinating backstory...her change in mood during that topic makes sense now. She was noticeably uncomfortable.
Her daughter Deirdre was not a 'member' of the Mansion Family but a target like a number of kids of famous people. The gang would charm them for money. In this case once Angie found out she cut all credit cards. The gang moved on. Luckily for them. That time in Malibu and the sixties drug use was rife. All the kids were dabbling in it. Angie and Peter decided to get away from the temptations esp after their house burnt down in a wildfire. Angie set up the home in Ireland and the kids followed and Peter went once he finished some business ties. Best decision for the whole family.
How interesting to hear them in the 1970s discussing how train travel was a thing of the past. In Europe it was being expanded and modernised whilst in America it was seen as history.
Watching this channel is bringing me so much joy as to how people can be... but I need to actively tell myself not to get downbeat about how we are now.. or at least to remind myself that Television is no longer where we find our best selves.
She was very brave to speak about her children's struggles with addiction. Dick Cavett was an absolute gentleman to ask her if he was probing too deeply. Love them both!
Here we are being nostalgic about a time that was sitting there being nostalgic about a time before them... Like looking into two mirrors facing each other. Whoa
Yes, Dick, I can name her first US movie- Gaslight, one of my favorite movies of the 40s. She got an Oscar nomination on her first try! Funnily enough, it was set in the 1890s, the era she said she wanted to go back to in the interview.
Mame had a 4th tour in 1969-1970, and played Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln NE for 1 night only on November 16, 1969. Sheila Smith, who played the role on Broadway sometime after Angela Lansbury had left, launched the tour in the title role, though several other actors would take on the role during its 55 city-stop run over the course of a short 10 months. It was, as far as my sources are concerned, the only time a national tour of the show ever came to Nebraska.
I could be wrong, but Angela might be the only person to originally perform at least one song each written by The Sherman brothers (in Bedknobs and Broomsticks) and Alan Menken (in Beauty and the Beast). I can't think of any others off the top of my head.
I didn't know her accent sounded so American back then. Though she has moved back to Ireland and spent a lot of time in England so I guess her English accent has come back now.
@7:55 "Some people are getting a very bizarre image of Southern California, all these articles about cultism, strange things going on, cauldrons popping up all over the place, you know...." Angela: "Well yes, cauldrons and all kinds of, uh, _nasties_ are... ... are _springing up,_ all over the place. It's very serious, what is happening, in _all_ big cities, and Los Angeles is certainly no exception."
Delightful time capsule. Up until Cavett starts to pry about her moving to Ireland and she looks at her watch. Either he was clueless or trying to get a scoop about her kids. She was a pro.
Sadly, not the only interview where he earned the name. Very interesting talk about the cults in Southern California (starting at 7:48). She seems a little flustered by it probably because her underage daughter, Deidre, associated with Manson, and Lansbury even wrote her a permission slip to hang out with him, in case her daughter was ever questioned by the cops.
Interesting to see Angela here, she sounded more American but also seemed slightly unhappy, how she talks about parenthood and getting away to Ireland. So long before Jessica Fletcher too, the role that would cement her as a true legend :)
I give her credit here for indirectly acknowledging her children's drug problem and that she was fortunate enough to acknowledge it and provide a different opportunity for them. I think also if parents give more money than time to their kids, and prioritize their careers instead, this is also liable to happen.
Omg lol this interview was a train wreck. The man didn’t know who the the heck was gonna walk on stage even as he read his que cards 😂 ugh she was a total diva and handled herself with grace. RIP
