I agree. He was like 12/13 when he started and that's your developmental years. And to have older kids putting you down take after take (and I don't doubt they did it off set, since that's how they knew him) I can only imagine what he felt. This is why kid actors lose their minds later on.
I think they casted him well. But with hindsight I would have casted someone more classically attractive and closer to the other casts age. I remember the stupid ‘screech’ type character in California Dreams was a really handsome guy. I think they someone like that can handle playing the geek with less issues as they grow up
From watching this clip, you can definitely see why the producers decided to cast Zack and Slater as best friends in later seasons because it’s so obvious that Mark-Paul and Mario had such great chemistry off set.
I must be in the minority because I'm the only one that thinks Screech is cool. I really think he's just misunderstood. He seemed like a cool kid who the cast alienated because he was much younger.
I didn’t like the way his character was cast. It seemed like the producers were just trying to follow a “trope”, about nerdy guys being only good for “comic relief, meaning that he had to follow all the stereotypes. Eg . The nerdy socially awkward guy had to be the butt of all the jokes, had to be considered less attractive and desirable than the athletic types, and have a crush on a girl who was out of his league socially and who turned him down.

I liked Screech as a character, because he didn’t really care about following norms, but he was genuine, and was always loyal to his friends. He may have come across as annoying sometimes, but only because he had never really learned how to polish his social skills. He was less self-centered than Zack, and so was usually a better friend to people than was Zack.
"He gets abused but he learns from it." This is actually sad because Dustin was basically getting mentally abused and treated like the third wheel by his own co-stars (except Mario Lopez). So sad his life was cut short! Screw you, cancer :(
