    His conceptualization of aliens being able to make infinite spaceships and travel through all of space but not know how fire works is so funny to me

      I think he's right. Aliens could just be creatures who evolved to cross light years of space, but are basically just dumb animals or cavemen. Why would people assume aliens are impressive or important? Because people who like talking about aliens want to be impressive and important for pointlessly speculating

      there are some fun esoterical takes on aliens. where many fundamental aspects of our lives would only be theoretical to them.

      There’s a loophole to the Fermi paradox where less advanced aliens discover technology from an extinct civilization and don’t actually build the ships themselves so it’s possible.

      fire is the combustion of the atom carbon, or any carbon molecules. if this life form is not carbon based, they very well may NOT have fire. we are carbon based, but other life could spawn from other elements.

    • @emilyklinneeee
      @emilyklinneeee 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      I’m going to go off on a tangent that has little to do with anything BUT i love this topic and jerma so, google says,
      “Earth is the only planet we know of that has ever had a fire. While there may be volcanos pushing out hot magma on the surface of Venus, the hottest planet in the Solar System, there has never been a fire there. Nor on Mercury, nor Jupiter, nor any of the other planets surrounding our or any other star.”
      There was also no fire on earth until humans discovered it, by combustion of wood to cook our food. There are infinite possibilities to life outside this solar system, and fire is just one of our little party tricks us humans have. Jerma is amazing at thinking of each obscure scenario in which aliens are fucking weirded out by our species. We do have weird fire powers.

      @@TheSilly6403 They would almost definitely hear sound. There are certain things that are almost inevitable in certain environments. Assuming the aliens live in any sort of atmosphere or liquid, then sound will be capable of propagating in that environment. Organisms which live in places with sound almost always evolve the ability to hear even if they have eyes, let alone if they don't. I am sure there's lots of aliens with senses we can't comprehend, after all there are creatures on EARTH with senses we can't comprehend. But that doesn't change that some of the basic ones are almost inevitable.
      For reference, a sense of hearing has evolved independently in numerous organisms on Earth, so it's clearly not a matter of homology that makes hearing so common but just a matter of efficiency. On a planet with no eyes, you can bet your money hearing will evolve. Of course this isn't to say EVERY organism ever will definitely be able to hear, but once you reach a certain level of complexity the odds of of not happening are VERY low.

    Back in the day we looked at the stars with tears in our eyes at what alien life could exist. Nowadays it's like "Yeah plants are sentient, they can see full color and they're talking shit about you on the internet to all the other plants and fungi and even a few insects too"
    We appreciate like, maybe 1% of what life could be like on this planet alone, we might not even *recognize* alien life if we saw it.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      It's so cool because science has come far enough that we have gone from asking if aliens exist, to asking if we can find them. Like it's basically fact that they exist at this point, we just haven't found direct evidence but due to extrapolation we know they're there. I think it's absolutely beautiful knowing we share the universe with so many things that must be so different from us, yet also probably experiencing the same awe and same questions that we do. But I also find it so absolutely depressing that I may die before we can ever find them. I can die happy if we find so much as a microbe.

      I had a teacher that pointed out one time that aliens would be *freaked out* that we breathe such a volatile element, Oxygen. It's incredibly flammable and corrosive to metal. It would make them be like "Oh shit these guys take in some weird shit"

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@milobytz Water is also very corrosive. Tbh we just use weird crap in general. But it just so happens that the weird crap we use is probably the most efficient way possible for life to survive, which is probably why we've gotten so far. So it's decently likely that most intelligent organisms probably use the same weirdly volatile chemicals to sustain themselves. But I am willing to bet there's also quite a few who don't, and to them most of the universe's creatures probably seem like freaks. Pretty funny to think about.
      Interestingly it's possible that Venus has life in its atmosphere, and if it does, it almost definitely is sustained by very different (but still pretty volatile) chemicals than us. Unfortunately if it does have life it's almost certainly microbial, probably not even multicellular, for the reason I mentioned earlier- the chemicals we utilize just happen to be some of the most efficient. Also life on Venus would have to be very, VERY light to stay in the atmosphere so they don't burn to death so there's that.
      Personally I'm a Europa and Enceladus fan. They probably have water oceans underneath the surface, and if that's the case, it's actually pretty dang likely for life to evolve there, and in fact the oceans would even be able to support decently complex life such as multicellular life. The lack of access to the sun limits them a little bit, but not as much as the life on Venus is limited. Wouldn't it be cool to discover life on not only a moon, but a moon so different from our planet?! And for the life to be COMPLEX??
      That said, Enceladus and Europa haven't actually shown any signs, while Venus has shown enough potential signs that people are actively trying to start expeditions to look for life there. So it's just wishful thinking for now that those moons may have life... same with Venus for the most part tbh. Everything we've found has potential explanations other than life.
      I just realized I got completely off topic but you clearly enjoy the topic of aliens so I hope you enjoyed my deranged ramblings about life in the solar system either way lol.

    I feel like if UFOs touched down and the aliens all walked out of the billowing fog all dramatically and they were just more humans then Jerma would just break. Like, his entire worldview would be shattered. The caregiver at the old folks home would walk in with the lunch cart and see a bunch of trashed furniture, a bunch of conspiratorial nonsense scrawled on the walls in crayola marker, and an 80 year old Bostonian rocking in the corner and muttering to himself. And he's, like, covered in nutella.

    I like how he brought up bees as a very weird animal, they are so small but without them we would literally have a global crisis. Why it was so important when they reached near endangerment that the government spent money on farms and advertising to protect them. They don’t even do that for near extinction animals but bees are just that important to keep the fruits and grain and other food chains alive that they stopped other funding just to protect them. Very happy about this because we got the bees back and now we won’t all starve :)).
