T.M. Stevens Interview Part 1

- I have been a fan of T.M. Stevens as long as I can remember. His resumé is quite extensive and equally as impressive! I finally had a chance to meet him in early 1990 while he was with Joe Cocker doing a co-headline tour with Stevie Ray Vaughan. It would end up being a bittersweet moment. Little did I know, that would be the last time I would see Stevie Ray in person, as he died on August 27th of that same year. Upon being introduced to T.M. by a fellow band member, he was instantly friendly to me and I was in awe of him as a bass player and a human being. I’d only seen him in ads and videos before, but now this “larger than life” personality was finally in my presence. We spoke about many things, but mostly “BASS!”
I am proud to say many years later, I have forged a friendship with T.M. that I will cherish till the day I die. We speak as often as we can and I have grown to love him as a friend over the years. You gotta love his larger than life personality. This interview was shot in his hotel room during NAMM. There are several great stories throughout this interview, so be sure to watch all three parts! I was lucky enough to get to know TM & his wife Taka in the Early 80's when I was just 19.
I had met TM when he stayed in my parents hotel in England whilst touring in a Jazz band. I told him I always wanted to go to New York & He gave me his number and said if I ever came to New York look him up. So i did go to New York and i did called him up. He was amazing, looked after me, made sure I was NY aware. It was the early 80's so not the safest place. TM would invite me out to all his gigs ,he was playing in several bands around N.Y I met lots of really great musicians.
iI was only later that i started to find out how many hit songs he had played on.
I moved back to England and we lost touch but I will always remember his kindness. A great musician and just the coolest person to spend time with.
TM is the sweetest dude, the most badass bass player...huge loss, and his music with keep on. HMF!!!

I'm in TOTAL agreement with T.M. here...............chops are your "vocabulary" - and it never hurts to have access to a BIG ONE - provided you can groove. I heard, almost identical advice from John Patitucci. T.M. ROCKS!
It's just effin' beautiful. Very few musicians' fate makes me this sad.

The combination of his own style mixed w/that of the late legend Mark Adams(from Slave); yes I remember those days(and the song you speak of), so much good music could be heard on the radio for free back then, and as a result you got to build up your record collection! 11-30-21.
