made me cry and I have a heart of stone,i lived with a young rebel ghost for 13 years,i called him pete,he would never come in, just look at me through the windows and doors,he would get unhappy with me and throw tvs, pictures, and books across the room, was I scared, hell no,i had to leave the mountain,i was spending more time in the woods than I was in the house,i was a hermet, doctors called it long term isolation,i called it peace of mind,
i miss pete and I still dream of his young beautiful face

This song was written about my great-great-great grandparents. I love this so much. I've seen the letters and they really were just as emotional, loving and beautiful as Joey and Rory portray them to be. Makes me cry to think that this is actually my very own family they're singing about. However, their story represents so many others, as well. Wonderful song, Joey and Rory.

I'm so sorry, Maryann. And, the answer is YES! :) I am happy to say that despite being captured by the Union troops, spending time in one of the most notorious of prison camps and also suffering from a bad case of the mumps, Grandpa Robison did, in fact, make it back home to his family and lived a nice, long life. He didn't pass away until 1905. :)

+Bethany Kelly Such a beautiful story. Where were they from and what unit did he serve in? My great, great, great grandfather Ben Crumly from Crumly's Chapel, Alabama has a story so similar. He was never imprisoned, only captured and paroled after Vicksburg. I have his actual canteen and the copies of his letters to his "Dearest Arabellar" (Arabella). All those men withstood great hardships and left their homes to fight for a cause. I wish that the whole world could hear this story and see that today's mainstream portrayal of the Confederates and the people of the South is not how they really were. Great, wonderful, strong, and brave.

Matt Mellown Hi Matt! Grandpa Robison was in the Maury Light Artillery out of Maury County, Tennessee. I would absolutely love to read the letters you have. Don't you just love to read them and let your mind float back to that time? My Aunt had Grandpa and Grandma Robison's letters for the longest, but from what I understand they are now in the State Archives or Libarary or something to that effect. About a month ago the Maury Light Artillery Reenactors came and had a dedication ceremony at Grandpa Robison's grave. It was so wonderful of them to do that. Unfortunately, at the last minute I was unable to go, so hate I missed meeting a lot of my family that I never knew existed before now. Still it's nice to know they're out there. Wish I could post a pic to this comment section cuz I would post a pic of Josephine for you to see.
And, I agree with you. These days people just don't understand how it really was and what it all really meant. But, many choose not to even try to understand. But, we know don't we? :

He is buried in Quito Memorial Cemetary in Tipton County TN . Josephine is buried about 5 miles away at West Union Cemetary in Shelby County TN . Some of my family has it on video and soon hope to post on youtube .

I was honored to play a role in this video. I played the courier who picked up and delivered the letter. We filmed the pick up and delivery over a two day span and not in chronological order. One interesting note, during the pick up scene my foot is swollen because the horse stepped on my foot during filming the day before. Thank you for all the positive feedback. Enjoy!

One thing touching about this video, among many other things, is how the soldiers are not portrayed as heroically walking through the streets. They are portrayed as tired. They are portrayed as sad. They are portrayed as going through hardships not related to battle. They are portrayed as human in the same way many of us are feeling as we view this.

    • @medicinelady20

***** A true honor. Such an honor. How did you feel inside emotionally during the scenes?

    • @medicinelady20
      @medicinelady20 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@River. I was a tumble of nerves in some scenes, such as when we came charging out of the wood line and as the two front lines clashed in battle. Making that charge was exhilarating, yet all the while I had thoughts of the soldiers from that time period running through my mind..., such as what could've been THEIR thoughts at that exact moment of bursting from the trees about to meet enemy fire? And the scene of us around the camp fires... I was standing next to a tree on the far left, talking with another "soldier". Believe I have my arms crossed or resting on my belt.. Though I was standing an' talking with him, I could still see around camp. To me, each person could've easily been a soldier thinking of home, of loved ones, thinking of their possible death perhaps...? That scene in particular was the most striking. One thing which made it even more surreal was the fact of having a real combat veteran in with us. The man shown with the scar on his face when Rory says, "I don't think Weaver will make it through the night." is a Green Beret who earned a Silver Star during combat. That scar is real. It was from surgery to remove a piece of shrapnel which had been lodged in the man's face for several years. He had the surgery only about a week before filming the video.

+Johnny Threefour ,Joey is a beautiful young woman/wife/mother who has a beautiful singing voice and will be leaving behind a grieving husband and three young girls. I do not know the answer to the why He inflicted it on Joey, anymore than why He gave it to all three of my first cousins from my Uncle Carl's family. I am heartbroken that Joey has died of this horrid disease, cancer. I do not know the whys of what my God does but I know is here protecting me and has been for the past 70 years. I guessing that He wanted another beautiful voice for His Heavenly Choir.

Just discovered Joey and Rory. Must say that I am very impressed with you both and this song. My great, great, great grandfather Ben Crumly had a similar story to this song. He left his wife and young children on their farm in Alabama to defend his home and his state. Tears filled my eyes as I thought about the sacrifices they all made. Thank you for the song and definitely look forward to the movie. High time someone accurately portrayed the people of the South from this time.

President Davis sent two teams to Washington with the mission to buy Fort Sumter but Mr. Lincoln wouldn't talk to them. Mr. Lincoln sent three warships, tugs and men 10-miles off the South Carolina coast. He tricked the Confederates;they believed invasion was eminent and fired first. This was Mr. Lincoln's War.

I keep listening to this song over and over. I am a Civil War re-enactor and the song is powerful and brings about the feelings of those fighting for what they believed in. My family has my grandfathers memorabilia from his time incarcerated in Andersonville (yes, he fought for the Blue) and I grew up always believing in the tragedy of both sides of the war. Joey and Rory are my favorite performers and they do this song with perfection - a real tear-jerker and one that takes you back in time.

If I remember correctly, the actual couple this was wrote about only had one child, a baby. In the original letter he tell his wife to marry another if he's killed, but "don't let him treat our baby bad". I tear up immediately whether I hear the song or read the letter. My g-g-grandfather was in the 60th Georgia Infantry, he was from the mountains of Georgia and owned no slaves. He had four children when he volunteered at age 32. He was killed in August 1862 while under Stonewall Jackson's command at the Battle of Bristoe Station in Virginia, it was a lead up battle that culminated in the Battle of Second Manassas(Bull Run). His photograph is on a battlefield marker near where he fell. I visited as a guest of honor at the 150th commemoration of the battle. Me and my sons stood where he stood in line of battle and fell, goosebumps came up and the hair on my neck stood up. His body fell into the hands of the Yankees and he's buried somewhere in the vicinity in an unmarked grave.
His wife never remarried and raised all the children by herself. Helluva woman. Her tombstone reads "Wife of Bailey". She never forgot him or his sacrifice.

The worst war , brothers fought each other because some lived in the north, some lived in the south. We should never forget this and we should stop accusing a side and doing away with a flag, a statue or anything that reminds us of this horrible war. We should never forget this war and make sure we never have another civil war. We are all equal and when a man is injured, regardless of where he was born, all men bleed red blood.

This is so touching that I keep coming back. It is pure and raw emotion. The inclusion of a black man had to be intentional, so I say "hurrah" for the creators who made this realistic and true. But the emotion, the words, the facial expressions.... It stirs something inside and it should for all of us. If we are native to this country, in that age, our ancestors were touched somehow, and this, this song, this video, it is about us.

I have just seen the most POWERFUL music video ever. This should be made into a movie. I am sure there is many many others that would make a great movie. God Bless J. W. and Josephine Robinson and family. And GOD Bless you Rory . and Joey in Heaven.

When Joey+Rory first started performing together, Rory played guitar but vocally, he took a back seat with soft harmonies & really let Joey shine. Later on, he started coming into his own...and began singing too. He has a powerful but lovely quality to his voice as one can hear in the "Josephine" video. But sadly, Rory proclaimed right before Joey's death that he would never sing again. He said there's no way he can get up on stage without Joey. I hope someday he changes his mind & realizes that Joey will always be right next to him when he sings onstage. We have lost Joey's beautiful voice; I hope we don't lose Rory's too. That would be a terrible loss to the music world.

+Sandra Pause I remember watching them on Can You Duet, and the judges told him to sing by himself for part of a song. And he said he just couldn't sing without Joey. I hope he eventually starts singing again with his daughters, even if it's just at home.

Jessie Smith When Joey became too sick to perform, Rory did do a concert that he felt obligated to do and, his daughter Heidi performed with him. Of course she is a solo artist herself, married & doing her own thing. I just hope he performs again for us someday. There are many who LOVE his voice...me being one of his many fans.

Dave Greene I love A Bible and a Belt. My favorite song that Rory sings is Josephine. And, I just love the way they made the Josephine video with family, friends, neighbors, etc. Rory's cousin even played the lead character in that powerful video. Joey & Rory did some amazing things in their short time together. It's hard to let them go.

what makes this song so powerful is that it is REAL. I'm a Yankee by birth but this still resonates. So many died in that war... young boys, old men and some ladies and girls as well. I had ancestors on both sides who lived through it.

just started listening to Joey+Rory last month and I am truly blown away by how beautiful their singing and then tonight I come across this song -- and wonder why I haven't heard it before, has it been on the radio? did it chart at all? Where the hell have I been? Spectacular writing and voice and perfect in about every damn way. In fact, I have only listened to it a few times but it feels like one of the finest songs I've ever heard -- up there with The Band's playing what I think is Dylan's finest song "When I paint my masterpiece." Heartbreaking, gorgeous, mystical. good job.
