  • After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
    Define the words, "disasters", "hazards" and "vulnerability"
    Recognize that disasters result from both hazards and vulnerability,
    Identify the 3 largest disasters in the world 1900-2015.
    List four general approaches to the classification of disasters.
    Recognize that disasters have been increasing worldwide for the past century, but more recent trends are unclear
    Recognize the phenomenon of “hybrid” or “mixed” disasters.

    There is also the concept of exposure, that is the presence of elements at risk, e.g. infrastructure, people etc. in hazardous region. The internal weaknesses of the element, e.g. weakness of buildings, is the vulnerability. So, disaster is a product of hazard, vulnerability, and exposure.
