Today I had some fun using the Zhiyun Smooth 4 Tracking Function to follow different items. I put together a quick how to video to show you the best ways to use the follow me /tracking mode on the Zhiyun Play App for Apple and Android. I found that the software worked best with a high contrast item on. So wearing Sunglasses like Casey Neistat worked in my favor when using the Gimbal’s tracking function with one person. Guys! I just figured out facial tracking with this setup. All you need is a handheld mirror. Do exactly as Travis did here, but instead of tracking sunglasses, a hat, or a mask, you put your face in the frame. Now look at your phone screen using the handheld mirror and highlight your face. Now your camera will track your face. DONE!

The sunglass and hat tracking is a great tip for solo film makers! Still deciding what gimbal to get, but the Smooth4 looks to be a great piece of gear.
That was my first time experiment, I had no one behind the camera to push the tracker. So sunglasses to the rescue 😁

This was a very good tutorial. I am starting a new TH-cam channel about hockey and I just purchased a gimbal smooth 4 and it really helps if this thing could track my feet while I dig into the ice. I could get some nice shots.

Thanks Travis. If you are using the gimbal alone, why not use the front camera to set follow mode? Certainly on new iPhones you have 4k on the front camers..
4K yes but often still limited especially for wide angle shots.

I just purchased a Smooth 4 and I've been tinkering with the follow me feature, which seems a little twitchy at times. Out of my tinkering, I have a sense that putting the gimbal into lock mode improves follow me tracking, but I don't have a billiard table to test against. :) Since you have way more experience, I'd be curious to know your thoughts on any difference (including none) combining follow me and lock modes makes.

Didn't notice much difference. It's a gimbal first for sure. There are better devices out there for dedicated face tracking if that's what your after.

Ok now can you please test the hyperlapse function if it's working the one with the movement parameters.
Yes. You can lock an object and walk towards it. You still will need to clean it up with something like warp stabilizer for the best results.
Thanks for this video. It was simple, fun and informative. I just purchased a Zhiyun smooth 4. It doesn't allow for live streaming with facebook. That's why I purchased it. Ugh! I did learn that I can use the gimbal in manual mode on facebook live but it won't allow use of the zoom feature or follow features. Do you have any suggestions for work around solutions? I really need the zoom feature and follow feature for live-streaming. Thanks!
Ah yes you need the app for follow me mode? I never experimented with live stream. I assume it's the ZY app not playing well with Facebook?
Thanks for the video! I've had a Zhiyun Smooth 4 for awhile but never use it because I almost always shoot my own content and don't have anyone to follow me with the gimbal. Do you know if the Zhiyun Smooth 4 follow feature works when shooting vertically? Because every time I try the gimbal goes crazy and doesn't follow. I am getting so frustrated. I just want to be able to shoot my own content with a tripod, and have my Zhiyun follow me while shooting vertically for TikTok/reels. Would love to know if you've tried this! All the information I can find online is only for using this feature in horizontal shooting mode.

@@TravisMThompson well this technology is exactly what astronomers use. The basic concept is to follow 1 celestial object for as accurately as possible for as long as possible. I'll comment on the manufacturer's website and see what they think :)
can you turn off the object tracking with any of the gimbal control buttons?
Unfortunately no. You need to select the object with the screen.
Just me that thinks it’s crap? I’m struggling with mine, it just drifts away slowly to look at the roof or something. Can’t fully understand what I’m doing wrong. Does the object need or benefit from being further away from camera?
How would you edit this in, do additional Premier motion tracking?
The reviews I have read mention significant problems using android. Ay insight into if or when these issues will be resolved?
With tracking? I have honestly only used it on myself a handful of times. It needs to recognize something like a hat when you're using it solo. Their website shows a couple dancing where one person focuses the software on the partner then walks in and starts dancing. The gimbal is tracking one person but 2 are needed in almost all scenarios to make it work well. It also relies on how much you trace when activating a full human dancer will work well. A pool ball is very small. The hat worked better. The bigger the square you draw around something the better.
@@TravisMThompson my question was not specifically about the tracking. It was about the many reviews of ZY and similar devices on Amazon. Many people say the app for android has a lot of problems, while ios gets very good reviews.
I have read the same. I use it 30% of the time with my Smooth 4 with no problems. Android is tuff with sooooo many manufacturers making different devices vs 1 iOS platform for integration. LG G7 One, V30 and P20pro all work well for me.
Thanks for your test.. You did a good job, but in my opinion smoth4 is definitely not good at traking, at all. He didn't track down the ball and got disconnected at the end of sunglasses part. even at one time you put a black transition on the dideo@ when it got disconnected a 2nd time . Tracking object will not be that slow all the time and sometimes you can't afford to lose time by restarting a disconnect tracking. Especially if you are upfront and are not aware that the smooth 4 is no longer taking the footage. I thought it was a software glitch but it looks like the device can't handle tracking like it is not made for that. Tracking is very important for those who have to be upfront subject.
There are definately better tracking devices out there I couldnt agree more. They also cost a lot more. I think this is a handy feature to have when it works but not something I would use full time.
Maybe u can help me I have an lg v20 android and the smooth 4 gimbal zy app don't work with my phone....I then bought an evo gimbal thinking it would work the app keep closing what do you suggest
I rarely use the app to be quite honest other than this specific scenario. I mostly just press record manually.
Hi Would you know how to sync a iPad to the Smooth 4 to use as a remote? I downloaded the app, but I’m only able to connect one. If I connect my iPhone first then the iPad won’t discover the Smooth 4. It appears as soon as the iPhone pairs it stops searching for additional devices.
Often older devices will not allow multiple Bluetooth connections this may be the case with your iPad.
im setup on a crane 3 lab with a nikon d850, but can't get this working. The target button isn't working. If i press it, it lights up yellow while pressed and then switches off when i stop pressing. Does the camera/phone make any difference? Is there anything i have to have switched on or off? Do i need to have certain autofocus settings switched on in camera?

You may need to use a thinner case or add a counter weight.
I tested an old LG G3 with an otterbox and it worked okay, no weights.
are you using a rode videomic? I heard a little interference in one clip. I've heard this is a problem with the Rode, though I haven't experienced it.

There is a motor there. So it could be over worked. I would check your balance.

I use it with a Pixel XL and a P30 Pro. It works great for me.
how to know if tracking works on the LG g5 oer Samsung s8. So many google play reviews of so much NOT working ?

I just asked zhiyun if smooth q2 will do track and follow and they said no. But in your video I see the gimble turn to track you. Am I wrong?

Try using the record from the hardware vs the screen.
@@TravisMThompson I'm having the same issue, and I did try it from the hardware. I'm guessing on trying outdoor in better lighting, and maybe an object that is more easily trackable? I tried two different sunglasses, and a can of green mosquito spray, indoors =)

Iam using pocophone F1 and iam still confused to buy zhiyun or DJI Osmo Mobile 2, because many comment zhiyun its not competible with Android
Zhiyun has a list of compatible devices. TBH I only use the app about 30% of the time. I use my phone app the rest.

Hi, Dailey, I've checked it, the smooth 4 can follow me no problem, when i am recording. Remember to choose the Lock Mode when you are tracking. If you choose the PF mode, it doesn't work! Enjoy making videos!
As Jared mentioned make sure lock mode is on. Check play store or app store for updates. Search google with your device name to see if there are any others with your device experiencing the same. Mine works with a Google Pixel XL and a G7 Android One.
