Nothing like that analog sound, by the the way which was recorded most likely on 8 or 16 track reel to reel. First hand the experience when you first walked in the studio to see that massive deck in front & center. I wish I could go back in time.

If my Dad had played this kind of country, all of his children would have been all over that. 😊 I'm a big fan of Charlie Daniels, so I expect this kind of music from him, yet because it was in '69, I wasn't expecting this. 🤯 I'm blown away! Not Applicable there’s plenty of old timey stuff being released by younger musicians. It doesn’t radio play because it isn’t a guarantee that everyone will like it. Radio stations are businesses. It’s the same reason classic rock stations play only ten led zeppelin songs when that band made ten albums full of great songs. The radio only plays guaranteed hits, they don’t take chances and it’s boring.
@capitalismforme I agree with you - with rare exceptions I don't like much of what Nashville is producing these days but it's logical that $$ dictates what is produced. If the old styles were what the public demanded then more of that type of music would be made. In fact, it is being made under the "alt country" label but you never see that kind of music on the charts. Country evolves, like most genres do, although Bluegrass seems to be the same now as it was decades ago, but that is a separate discussion.

Levittown was a creative place because so many of the folks came from families that were just coming into the middle class from life in the inner city surrounded by their ethnic groups. Those cat's could play their butt's off and seeing Charlie Daniels back before The Devil went down to Georgia was really cool 👍🏻🤠👍🏻😎 . Your really lucky David that you got to meet and film these guys when they were really shining and jamming out back in the day, very cool 😊
David, once again I am blown away by the content that you have shared with the world. Seeing how effortless and relaxed this group of professional musicians made this studio session look is a real change on perspective. They had much less room for error when it came to production due to the available recording equipment/methods being used, but they did not allow that to deter them from letting loose and grooving on that particular track. From writing my own music and playing with others, I respect just how much sheer ability and chemistry that was shared between everyone in that studio. I saw in a previous reply that you had more footage of Charlie Daniels from this time period on your channel, so I look forward to checking that out as well!
I once owned an Old Kraftsman guitar that Kershaw had given to the daughter of a local .... ummm ... "Printer ally wheeler Dealer." I had nut work, renewed the tuning keys, and I think this unknown kid named Guy Clark adjusted the neck for me, and then in 1993 after owning it for 23 years I traded for a cheap black star electric with a guitar shop on Nolensville pike that deals in used music equipment to this day. Nashville, was ALWAYS about those studio musicians, and some of the best of the best self taught AND classically trained musicians made their way here, with their own vibe which some of these "magicians" concocted into a beautiful brew. Not a formula, but a vibe. RIP OLD NASHVILLE. ❤ AND RIP, " NASHVILLE CATS." And some you trombone players too 😊

Wow! This is the first time I've actually watched footage of Bob Johnston. I didn't know he was so physically involved in the studio. I can see why all those great artist worked with him. Imagine Bob dancing around Leonard Cohen in the studio. Well as much as he could to Mr. Cohen's songs. Just try dancing to Avalanche. This was great footage! Thanks!
I miss sessions without metronomes! The way they drag the time during the breaks... it's such a unique, human thing. Nothing else can duplicate the way musicians "suss" each other out when they are playing in regard to timing. It's a THING. No metronome can do it.

Wow, this is great. I lived in Nashville, right down from the holiday inn on Broadway. These are things I never got to see, even being a guitar player, even today. *i thought i was a decent player, until I moved to Nashville. Just the random family reunion jug band type bluegrass, these people were ordinary working class folk like me, they could play like hell. And, when you're actually in the room with the music, not listening on a speaker, it's simply amazing. Lots of fine musicians in that area.*

Pretty sure that’s Kenny Buttrey on drums and not Karl Himmel. And the person you show to be Tim Drummond is not him. Tim had sandy blonde hair. Both Buttrey and Drummond played w Dylan & Neil Young over the years. Himmel also played w Neil. Doug Kershaw the Cajun fiddler is a legend. His brother played w Neil as well. Great video !

I’ve never seen this before- I just play by ear and I would have probably started out in a similar fashion just riding the chords but when he comes over and apparently describes or sings how he wants the piano to sound and the pianist then picks right up on it while playing. Amazing!

There were several legendary session groups in that era, The Nashville A team, the Wrecking Crew, the Funk Brothers at Motown, the Swampers in Muscle Shoals and Booker T and the MGs in Memphis, just to name the most well known ones. What was really amazing about those groups was not just how good they were but how fast they could work and create. Some of these guys would be playing on several different sessions in one day and often when they got to the studio was the first time they heard the song/demo at all.
It looks like you recorded this at the "Quonset Hut". The same studio Patsy Cline, Roger Miller, Brenda Lee and a lot more used. Very cool footage, thank you!
🚫🚫 Since at least as far back as the 80s, recording studios have had the ability to deceptively make untalented musicians and bands sound SUPER-talented! They can literally pull a random non-musician off the street, hand the person a guitar for the 1st time in his or her life, then quickly teach them to play single notes, one at a time, stopping in between each and every note, to show them the next note(rinse & repeat 100+ times), then they can edit and paste all the single, stop-&-go notes together into what will "appear" to be a seamless lead guitar solo, making it sound as if the non-musician had played a long, impressive guitar solo with perfect timing and zero mistakes! It can easily be done with ANY instrument, and ANY untalented noob! In other words, they can deceptively make ANYONE sound like a seasoned musician on ANY instrument! They can make an entire band of non-musicians sound like the most talented band ever! 😈😏
When Bob Dylan came in Charlie was supposed to be there. But Charlie "begged" to be included. After the session Bob went I take it to Bob Johnston. Hey I need to talk to you about that one guitar player and he started apologizing Oh sorry about that he really wanted to play.... Needles to say Bob loved Charlie's playing.....
I heard Charlie talk about that in an interview. He said he was only supposed to play on a song or two. When his song or two was done, he said he started packing up his stuff and Dylan said, "Hey where is Charlie going?" Dylan saw to it that Charlie played on the rest of the stuff, too.

They can literally pull a random non-musician off the street, hand the person a guitar for the 1st time in his or her life, then quickly teach them to play single notes, one at a time, stopping in between each and every note, to show them the next note(rinse & repeat 100+ times), then they can edit and paste all the single, stop-&-go notes together into what will "appear" to be a seamless lead guitar solo, making it sound as if the non-musician had played a long, impressive guitar solo with perfect timing and zero mistakes! It can easily be done with ANY instrument, and ANY untalented noob!
In other words, they can deceptively make ANYONE sound like a seasoned musician on ANY instrument! They can make an entire band of non-musicians sound like the most talented band ever! 😈😏
When Bob Dylan came in Charlie was supposed to be there. But Charlie "begged" to be included. After the session Bob went I take it to Bob Johnston. Hey I need to talk to you about that one guitar player and he started apologizing Oh sorry about that he really wanted to play.... Needles to say Bob loved Charlie's playing.....
I heard Charlie talk about that in an interview. He said he was only supposed to play on a song or two. When his song or two was done, he said he started packing up his stuff and Dylan said, "Hey where is Charlie going?" Dylan saw to it that Charlie played on the rest of the stuff, too.

Oh my God, it was subconscious but now I'm aware of it.
