Detroit Metal City is an anime you're definitely missing out on. Starring Johannes Krauser II, DMC is a death metal band with a lead singer who just wants to be a pop singer. So obviously hilarity ensues.

@@chellastation This is at odds with Japanese black metal that has many subgenres and that many artists evolved without going J-pop. Depeche Mode 80s dark gothic synthpop is entirely different. And this movie is at odds with black metal in general where black metal musicians like Ulver evolved into non-black metal like electronic/ambient/avantgarde!
Many Japanese black metal bands are not in any way like Detroit Metal City and incorporate many different styles like many black metal bands do. This anime/movie shows the stereotypical black metal elitist/purist type!

You know this a strong representation of how the music business really is. A young musical hopeful with dreams of wanting to bring people with their songs, gets into the industry only for the industry to change everything about them because that's what sells.

I've been performing for a living for 10 years now as a musician. It's not the industry. It's the thing with every kid that gets into an art form of some sort. As an artist, you have a choice to make concerning where you want to take it. If you only want to do what makes you happy, you have no future career in any type of art form. To turn your passion into a career means to turn your art into a business, and in the end it's consumers that dictate what sells, not the industry. Kids go into these things not realizing that, and then blame the industry or the business when their 100% authentic self doesn't pay the bills. The fact of the matter is that in real life, nobody gets to be their 100% authentic selves all of the time, and generally the people who are crushed by this realization are the ones that never took anything seriously enough to try and self-educate before making huge decisions.
That being said, hundreds of thousands of artists and musicians are perfectly happy doing exactly what it is they want to do. They're just realistic enough to understand that they need to have real careers to back up those passions.
And there's really no easy answer to what somebody should do, because upon taking responsibility for your passion as a business it becomes work. If you decide to pursue your art form as a career, you have to accept that you will never again be as passionate about it as you are now. For some people, that's a worthy tradeoff. Others would prefer to keep their passion intact by not making it a job. The fact of the matter is that this isn't something that developed when record labels did, this is human society and has been as long as we've had the arts.

DMC is still one of my favorite shows out there , and the manga is AMAZING !!!! It has such a wholesome story with an amazing ending that calls back the first chapter of the manga , the story of DMC is the story negeshi accepting who he really is (The pig of capitalism is the real deal like the video said ! ) , its an amazing message and I fucking love it , the live action managed to get that message out too but the manga did by the far the best job ! That is the core of DMC.....and I gotta say , the kinds of bands and people DMC goes up against after the anime are SO GOOD ! I love Jack but he was just the jobber in the manga , for those who read my favorite battles were against Dezumu and the original DMC.

    • @ZetsubouGintama
      @ZetsubouGintama 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think Jack is a jobber. More like he want to retire and doing his favorite jazz music so he isn't in mind in the game much when Krauser defeat him. Funny that, Jack might be like Negishi in his younger day (want to be a jazz musician but became a notorious rock star instead) and Neshishi might connect with him if he didn't barged him Jack's dressing room when he was "hyping up" for rock battle.
For me the OG DMC was more sad one. Krauser Sr./Genki aside of spring tongue trick he's a real deal and supposed to be a living legend of Japanese metal like Maximum the Hormone. But somehow he was treat as a joke after he was exposed and defeated and no one give a shite on his comeback. More importantly, I feel sorry for the guitarist who follow him since he is the on Krauser/Negishi accept the skill.

DMC captured the spirit of how I felt, as a fan of metal, more closely. It's fun, kind of a safe emotional heatsink for all kinds of dark thoughts/impulses/feelings, but not taken seriously. I think this essay is missing something, though. A part of Negishi IS Krauser, somewhere, deep down. He wrote satsugai. I don't think you can just chalk it up to him being desperate to join a band, any band. The fact that he reverts to his stage persona sometimes, especially when drunk and/or in despair, solidifies that. Let's try to imagine Negishi, shortly after going to college IN TOKYO for MUSIC and being unable to find any work or any audience. Full of despair and probably resorted to drinking his problems away once or twice. Then he wrote this song, and I'll try to add an alternate interpretation:
"I am a terrorist from hell
    Yesterday I raped my mom
Tomorrow I'll carve up my dad
I am a terrorist straight out of hell"
I took my parents hard earned money and squandered it. My dreams have put them in debt and I feel like ish about it. I have basically taken advantage of their love for me.
    "I don't have a mom or dad
    That's because I killed them
I don't have friends or lovers
    That's because I killed them...
    ...Dye your memories with blood"
I have distanced myself from friends and family because I don't want them to know how much of a failure I am. It hurts so much I want to erase that past self, so filled with optimism, by any means necessary.
    "I don't have siblings
    That's because I killed them
    I don't have a God or Buddha
    That's because I killed them"
(Very similar to the last part, but also) I am angry at god for letting all my hard work result in nothing.
// This is just a thought, but I don't think it's a controversial one. Krauser is the darkest part of Negishi, and it's one he wants to shun. But it's the one that seems to connect with the most people.

    • @ZetsubouGintama
      @ZetsubouGintama 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Wow, I barely thought about that. I just thought Negishi was desperate to make music under manager's threats. Make sense that he was angry when Kintama Girls plagiarism his song with thier own version. It was his hard work and his though worry about his family in Inukai.
His is not kill his family in literal sense. He kill his mother's kindness with hopeless dream to be trendy pop musician. He kill his father's trust with stubborn pride to keep staying Tokyo. And he kill his brother's innocent with his song and turned him into metalhead. Even his sister resent him for abandon the responsibility for chasing his dream.
For Negishi, SATSUGAI is his despair because the one he want to kill most is himself. It was irony that it was Krauser that bring his family back together as a sign of his atonement to not taking a responsibility.

Hello! Thanks for the video. I love the show and live action. The animation is funnier to me. But also it has amazing music video scene Mad Monster which is unexpectedly greatly animated and freakingly badass. Love every second of the show. I've watched live action recently thinking that it wouldn't be as good as the anime, but suprizingly it becomes one of my favorite adaptation. It has many flaws, some scenes are weird, the acting is exaggerated but it is so sincere, touching and inspiring. The scene where Nagishi in Krauser outfit runs back to the stage to save the band he left makes me emotional. I loved his supportive mother that quesses who Krauser is, never blames Nagishi for his career and songs (especially, the one he wrote about killing parents) and calls singer "Krau-chan". So cute. However, I don't like the manager. There is a scene when she visits Nagishi sexually harasses him in front of his love. It was too much.
Also, I think Nagishi is quite tragic character. He loves the music, he genually loves the pop-songs and tries his best to create one. But nobody cares about it. Even though i am not pop music fan and really enjoy death metal I really disappointed that some people think DMC is about superiority alternative music over pop songs and what Nagishi sings openly and TRULY CARES is a crap. That's actually the most offensive when someone devalues your dream and passion. Krauser comes out as an act of revenge and response on unfairness and cruelty of the world. It is despair. Sincere as love songs that Nagishi performs. And it is very sad.

I gave this a go years ago because it seemed interesting & the episodes are about 10 minutes each, since I've binged it a few times. It's a nice & well rounded short story that's amusing & grotesque. Live action film is good too.

My favorite series of my college hood. It's taught me how to embrace your dark self instead of rejecting it while trying to use your impulse in a relatively functional way.
Negishi was trying too hard to be a hipster, but everyone except his GF only considered him to be a trendy otaku at best. His true calling is when the unleashed his inner Mr. Hyde and become guitar hero metal monster and his struggle to find a way to live it is something truly inspire me.
I also think Krauser and Negishi would be great Yakuza side characters. Imagine a substory that Ichiban meets Krauser and trying to help his love life and got him as one of the Poundmate or Ichiban Holding employees.
