  • Keşan is 112 km away from Edirne, the city center.
It is established on the eastern edge of a plain that extends to the Meriç River in the west. It is surrounded by Saros Bay of the Aegean Sea in the south, Enez and Ipsala Districts in the west, Uzunköprü district in the north, Malkara District of Tekirdağ in the east, and Gallibolu district of Çanakkale in the southeast.
Its area is 1087 square kilometers and its population is 84 thousand.
Marmara type of Mediterranean climate is dominant in the district. The autumn and winter months are cold and rainy, and the summer months are dry. The climate in the region, which has a coast to the Gulf of Saros, is milder. Especially the spring and autumn seasons are rainy and the winter seasons are snowy.
A large part of the land of the district is generally covered with plains and grain fields. Moreover, the south and southeast regions, which are formed by the merging of low hills, are covered with forest.
There is Korudağı, which starts in the south of the district and extends to the southeast along the Saros Gulf, and the highest hill in the district is Hızırilyas Hill with an elevation of only 371 m.
In the southern part of the district, there is Tuzla Lake, which is connected to the sea by a canal on the Erikli coast. When the sea rises, it flows into the lake, and when the sea is open, it flows from the lake to the sea. There are Kadıköy Dam Lake, which irrigates the Kadıköy plain, and the Dokuzdere Dam Lake, which irrigates the Çamlıca and Bahçeköy land.
Keşan is the intersection point of roads connecting Anatolia to Europe through the Dardanelles Strait, stretching from Istanbul to the Ipsala Customs Gate and from there to Greece. Today; Located at the junction of E-87, E-84, E-90 highways, Keşan is the largest district of Edirne. Edirne, Istanbul and Çanakkale meet in Keşan and reach Greece from there. Keşan, on the road that connects Europe with Anatolia, is 117 away from Çanakkale, 112 from Edirne and 215 from Istanbul. It is only 35 kilometers away from Greece.
Almost all of the people of the district are immigrants from Greece, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. All of Suluca, Orhaniye, Pırnar villages and 50% of Beyendik and Çamlıca villages are Pomak Turks. Yeniceçiftlik Village is completely Bosnian, and all of the other villages are local people called Gacal.
The ancient name of Keşan, which played an important role as a transit point in the transport of armies and cultures from continent to continent throughout the ages, was 'Zorlanis'. It is believed that Luwis and Thracian tribes lived in Keşan thousands of years ago.
Remaining under Greek, Persian and Macedonian rule, respectively, Thrace passed under Roman rule from the 1st century AD. Keşan, located on the "Via Egnatia", that is, Egnatia road, gained even more importance in this period. Because the Egnatia Road, which was built in 145 BC with a width of 6 meters, connected the Old Rome and the New Rome, that is, today's Istanbul.
The Egnatia road, which provides an important military and commercial transportation between the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Adriatic, maintained its importance in the Eastern Roman period. During the Middle Ages, Keşan was attacked by Goths, Avars, Bulgars and Pechenegs from the Balkans. In order to protect the Eastern Roman capital Constantinople from these raids, Keşan's position on the main road was gradually strengthened from the 7th century AD. The town, whose population increased as a garrison, was raised to the level of archbishopric at the beginning of the 10th century and gained the appearance of a metropolis (maincity) connected to Constantinople.
Taking advantage of the internal turmoil of Eastern Rome, the Ottomans, who moved to Rumelia, first conquered Gallipoli and then Thrace in 1354. Prince Murat assigned one of his commanders, Gazi Evrenos, to conquer Keşan in order to control the road to Istanbul. After the conquest, Rome's famous Egnatia Road passed under Ottoman control.
Keşan, which is on the main route with the name 'Left Kol', became an important transit center during the Ottoman period. Turkmen communities from Anatolia were settled in Keşan and its environs.
Along with the Ottoman defeat in the Balkans in the 19th century, Keşan was also shaken by invasions and migrations. It was occupied by the Russians twice, in 1828 and 1877. Keşan, located on the main road to Anatolia, was also affected by the migration wave that started with the Russian occupation of the Balkans in 1878-79, and some of the immigrants settled here.
Keşan was finally occupied by the Greeks on 30 July 1920, after the First World War. The people of Keşan supported the 'Thrace Defense Law Society' with all their might, which participated in the National War of Independence. The district was liberated from this occupation on 19 November 1922, after the 'Great Victory' under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
