  • The Matchless Chieftain is one of the finest amps I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Its single channel is incredibly dynamic, warm, punchy, loud, and bold, but it's easy under the fingers and can be shaped to work with a wide range of guitars and styles. It also sounds great at lower volumes. There is a super addictive quality to playing through such a touch sensitive amp that lets your style & expression shine through.

    As someone who has owned two different chieftains, this is the best I have ever heard the amp sound. This is a super spot on and accurate representation of what the amp is capable of. Playing is so tasteful!

    As a long time owner and player of a Lonestar 100 Watts head combined with a 2 by 12 Mesa Boogie Rectifier cabinet, you made me wonder about the EL34's and open back...
    Although the Lonestar can be equipped with EL34's instead of the 6L6's, I doubt very much it sounds like this Matchless combination.
    Since I was trying to sound more "EL34" using pedals, I guess I am going to have to check that Matchless.

      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Matchless amps are definitely cream of crop when it comes to cleans & mid gain tones. I typically just make videos of things that I'm personally interested in or if companies reach out to me like Matchless, I'll showcase that gear as well, but I'll only make videos of gear that I'd actually use myself. Always happy to hear people's comments, but it's not too realistic for me to have access to any old piece of gear. Thanks so much for checking out the video!

    Another great video! How would you compare the sound of EL34 vs 6L6?

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man! It's tricky to describe the nuances because so much of the sound depends on what kind of amp the tube is in and what the designer did to the preamp to influence the overall sound of the amp. Having said that, EL-34's typically break up a little bit smoother and earlier than a 6L6 will. They can still be plenty big and punchy sounding but 6L6's tend to have a bit more headroom and are often described as "fat & round," but they clip in a slightly harsher way than an EL-34 in my opinion. In a practical application, they're pretty subtle differences that usually be compensated for just by adjusting the amp's EQ. A properly nerdy answer for you!

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! There is definitely some similarity between those two heads but I'd give the edge for cleans/mid gain to the Chieftain and Independence for the higher gain stuff. Those are my two favorite Matchless amps in their lineup, so it's hard to go wrong with either. If you hadn't seen it, I also have a demo of the Independence if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/BOGAGRhime8/w-d-xo.html

    Does the chieftain handle TS style pedals well? I know Vox and Vox styled amps(like a lot of matchess and morgans) don't, but the chieftan seems to be different. If not, it's really no big deal, theres a timmy and archer for that.

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does! I'd say the Chieftain is probably one of the best pedal platforms I've ever played. The mid control is very powerful for taming the mid hump of a TS style pedal and the brilliance control allows you to shave off any overly bright frequencies. The Chieftain is based off of an EL-34 power section vs the EL-84 of say an AC30 so it's bolder and more full sounding in my opinion. Great amp! Thanks for checking out the video!

      I used to have an original Klon (wish I still had it) and a 2-10 Chieftain and the combination produced some of the best drive tones I’ve ever gotten. Love all the sounds he get with this amp. Killer player. What I can say is that he never approached what it can do driven. This amp sounds better and better the louder it gets, all the way to max volume. It doesn’t crap out, just get louder and juicier.

    • @ZachWish
      @ZachWish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're both great amps, but I'd go with the Chieftain personally. Has a bigger and more bold sound to it. I like setting Matchless amps right on the edge of breakup and then hitting them with pedals for more gain. The Chieftain has a bit more headroom so it suits that sound a bit better in my opinion. Plus, I'm used to big 100W heads & cabinets vs combos so it's a bit more my speed. Thanks for checking out the video!

      Zach Wish I'd probably look at getting the Laurel Canyon head to go with a 2x12. I've got the hc15 from watching your video, and I love it, so chimey and fast. Just excellent. Hard choice, it's for studio use more than live.
