Mahendra kapoorji is the only singer of his generation who came anywhere near the great Mohd. Rafi in terms of his voice, its range, the variety of songs he could sing, the expression (or bhaava) that he gave to every word in a song, and lastly, in addition to being a very talented and great singer, he was as great a human being as Rafi Sahab, humble to the core. No wonder he called himself a disciple of Mohd. Rafi. He had the guidance of Mohd. Rafi right from his young age, though, as advised by Rafi sahab, Mahendraji developed his own style of singing and did not copy Mohd. Rafi's style. Look at every song in this album and the expression he brings to every word in every song. It is a bit unfortunate that during his time, he had to live under the shadow of some great singers that included Rafi, Talat Mahamood, Kishoreda, Manna Da, Mukesh and others. So, today, Mahendra Kapoorji is less talked about than these other greats. However, I feel, Mahendra Kapoorji will always be remembered as a legend of Indian playback singing and his songs will always be classics that will live for generations, as long as playback singing exists.
