Nu sunt adepta manelelor, dar aceaste melodii întrec acest gen și m- au mișcat sufletește prin impulsul patriotic care l-au dat mesajul lor care parcurge aceste cântece de la început până la sfârșit!

This music genre is very interesting from a social point of view. It is called "manea" (plural manele). It is a mixture of arabic, turkish, balkanic rythms. It is a very old genre in Romania, dating back in the 19th century. However, the present "manele" are quite different. Nowadays, they are associated with a lower level of culture. Most of the singers are Rroma and usually the themes of their songs are wealth, their enemies etc. Kind of resembles the gansta hip-hop/rap from the States. But these songs that you reacted at are about the proud of being Romanian. Now, they are many people who will say that "manele" is a genre that only un-educated people appreciate and like. But trust me, many people, no matter what their level of education is, will eject from their chairs and start dancing on this music when they have drunk enough at a party. Although most of "manele" have vulgar lyrics and are quite stereotypes, some of them are good and enjoyable. But I think that more valuable are the genuine "lautari" ( I believe fiddlers might be a translation, but it doesn't reflect them appropriately). These are musicians that are mainly Rroma people (gypsies) and the vast majority of them don't even have a formal musical education- they never studied music in a school, they learnt everything in their families. They are like magicians - they just play the instruments creating a beautiful music. Some of these self-made artists have played with professional orchestras. You should check out "Taraful Haiducilor", "Taraful Caliu", "Taraful de la Clejani"- exquisite music). My favourite is "Taraful Caliu". Genuine, talented, simple gipsies who deserve to be promoted.

you are a little wrond about Lautari I personal know many of them. Like The Bursuc family. Most of them studied music at professional level. [at least Lipatti or Enescu Higt Schools in Bucharest and some at University].
This song is not romanian. After 1989, many manele singers starting "importing" songs from Greece, Turkey, Bulgary and rewrited with romanian lyrics.
I donlt say I don' like it. I say is a mix of influences. For example, Harmonca is Serbian, but also I can hear some arabic or hungarian parts.
But yes, Lautari are family and generations of musicians.
Also, I agree: "Taraful Caliu" are the best.
And maybe @mrgiant want to listen this song: th-cam.com/video/Uk_ItO4nWDE/w-d-xo.html
      is an old romanian song.

@@SuburbanPhilosophy Maybe I am mistaken Correct me if I am wrong. Bursuc played/sang once with an philarmonic orchestra. It was quite a scandal in Romania, which I don't condone. I belive it was quite interesting (if it was Bursuc or another artist, I don't recall). Also, I believe that one of his daughters was in a TV musical show. A great voice, she definitely studied music. I am not denying that some musicians of "the new generation" now study music formally. But their forefathers were talented people, who didn't need or did that. Exquisite musicians. As for the fact that this song is not Romanian, I trust you. I am not a professional musician. You seem to be one. But you are right, many of the Romanian manele copy songs from the Balkanic region, Serbia, Bulgaria, etc. But althoufh we are not geographically in the Balkan Pensinsula, culturally we are. i wish that they wouldn't copy other rythms as much, but instead be more original. Like the "lautari". Now, "muzica lautareasca" is something else, a great mix of influences form the Balkans, Turkey and the Romanian folklore. Believe it or not, although I am from Transylvania, where the "lautari" are not present in our folklore, I really appreciate their music and sometimes it brings tears to my eyes. They are great artists and their music is powerful. I wish more people would appreciate the "lautari" and their talent (at least in Transylvania).

@@SuburbanPhilosophy By the way, you posted a link to a GREAT video. It was wonderful. Correcte if I am wrong, but Simion Bogdan is a researcher of traditional Romanian/Roma music. A talented man, who knows a lot about old music. And this video is a fine example of his work. The sound of "cobza" is heartwarming.

Dacă vreți să auziți cum suna maneaua originală din secolul al XIX-lea, căutați "Leliță Săftiță"(Romanian Old Folk Song) sau "Până când nu te iubeam" , Ansamblul Anton Pann.

The US is different because it's not a "national" country let's say. It's a new mix of different European (at start) people and now from all over the world. Romania (and other similar countries) are just that, Romanians for thousands of years (of course, with different names, belonging to different kingdoms, empires, etc over the long history). That's the difference you touched upon in the end.

Hi man. This is not original romaniam music. This is " manele ", a new type of music from 20 years ago, with arabian and turkish influence. You have to listen Gheorghe Zamfir, Aurelian Andreescu, Angela Similea, Doina Badea, Aura Urziceanu ( she is unbelievebel ) , folk mysic, opera ( Angela Gheorghiu ) and romanian traditional music. This is the original romanian music. Respectly, Cristian
