See if you can count how many guitar parts were laid down in this track, and yet the song, with all its funkiness has so much air / white space in it. Room for the listener to feel the funk!

I've always considered this song about a father finally deciding to let his grown daughter marry, and having him followed to make sure that he's worthy. The guitar riffs going back and forth show how the suitor and father show a passionate interest and a common ground, but now it's "stopping time" ... it's now the husband's turn to take over.

Sounds unfinished to me. Dan would usually cook up some flavourful sauce. My guess is that Walter was still in hospital, or the budget had run out.
The guitar is sick. One gets so used to wonderful Steely Dan licks that they don't get enough credit for some of them.
