“You’ll be sorry. You always feel sorry later on.”
That part gets me the most.
That’s always how they act, isn’t it? They treat you like shit, then come back and are all like “I’m so sorry! I promise it won’t happen again!”
But the promise wasn’t real and they’re not really sorry. They just want you to think that so you won’t hold what they did or said against them.
Then they repeat those apologies and promises to you after it inevitably _does_ happen again.

However John found the courage to sing a song like this, I want to applaud him for it. Because it's probably the best song about parental abuse I've ever heard.

      Because
It looks like some great big artistic, courageous choice from the outside...but eventually, telling the truth starts feeling better than avoiding it..

    You have got
    that look in your eye
in the pinprick point where kindness goes to die
I'll be six years old next year
    You erase me
    you'll be sorry
you always feel sorry later on
when you come around to say so
    I will be gone
and in my place meet my letter perfect body double
    you erase me
    when i got ready
to set out on my own
took up the reigns myself all through you
dug the spurs in clean down to the bone
    but all that comes later
now there's only you and me
and the replica where my body used to be
you can go ahead and hit him
he feels no pain at all
    you erase me
    you erase me

    Songs like this make me think of that Jeffrey Lewis album title;
"its the one's who've cracked that the light shines through"
I'd never wish the life John's endured on anyone, but damn has it produced some beautiful goddamn music.

"When I got bigger , I set out on my own took up the reigns myself all through you dug the spurs in clean down to the bone, but all that comes later."
That "but all that comes later" really drives that point home.
When people say "one day you'll look back at this and you'll know you're stronger for it" it doesn't matter how true that may be, all that comes later...
