Sam and Brian have practical knowledge while Adam and Ben have theoretical knowledge
Sam and Brian adapted better. If Adam and Ben weren't so focused on trying to block S&B, particularly after claiming Arizona, they probably could have just claimed Utah and Montana and won.
I sorta wish that the "instantly claim the state" card had a caveat that it couldn't be used for the 4th state (and you had to draw another card), in order to add more suspense.

Remote car diagnosis:
Rental Clerk mentioned as a possible problem "haven't started the car today".
Car overheats about 15 minutes after being started.
Heater doesn't seem to be working properly.
Outside air has warmed up to 19 degrees F (-7C).
That car has frozen.
Somewhere in the cooling system a piece of ice is blocking a line, so the coolant isn't circulating. So the water in the heat exchanger for the heater is still cold, while the water in the engine got incredibly hot. Then at least some of that ice melted, letting the hot water reach the thermostat.
The weird smell is hot coolant.
The weird sound is ... either what the engine sounds like in its weird "limp to dealership" mode, or the water pump is broken. Which can happen if it tried to pump ice.
I'm guessing that it got REALLY cold overnight, and any cars they were expecting to rent they start and let run for a couple of minutes, then shut them off so the heat can spread slowly through the whole engine and ideally everything is above the freezing point of the coolant before the customer starts it. But you were unexpected, so got a car that hadn't been prepped, and parts of it were still very cold from last night.
Weird issues I'll never have to face because I'll never live in a place cold enough to freeze water.
@@phs125 Subaru no joke sells engine block heaters, it is such a problem to start them in the freezing cold.
My thought too. Butte is about 5200 feet elevation (1733 m) and can regularly get to below 0 F (-32 C) and can be windy since it's next to the continental divide. Normally any car should have good coolant and it's not an issue but perhaps the factory mix wasn't enough and it needed a more concentrated mix.
When the lady told them it hadn't been warmed up, what she meant was they should start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes before driving, that would allow the coolant to warm up before it started circulating. Which they didn't do for obvious reasons.

I'm surprised the rental place let them drive off with a completely cold car, maybe the guys insisted they were in a hurry. Either way, agree with the diagnosis. Same deal in Minnesota nearby, need engine block heaters or let the car idle before driving.

Ben and Adam played so well, they didn't deserve to loose this due to a closed Avis and a cold Toyota. But still, awesome series, can't wait for S2.
They would have lost either way because the other team got lucky
I'd argue they were too focused on trying to "own" Sam and Brian, particularly on claiming Oregon. In that respect they did well to correctly predict S&B would claim Arizona and catch him mid flight. They overplayed their hand when gloating in their claim video and underestimating Sam's skill to discern they were going to Oregon, giving them crucial intel to head directly to Idaho (though Sam might have figured it out anyway after scanning the airport). They probably could have won with their own states in the time it took them to claim Oregon.
@@MrBcardinal35 yes, that was spectacularly dumb considering as soon as they got AZ they could have gone UT ➡️ MT FTW. Yes, Team Yellow could have gone OR ➡️ ID or OR ➡️ WA, but they would have been well on their way before Team Yellow landed at Sky Harbor and learned how screwed they were.
Didn't deserve? They lost because they didn't check the time their car rental place opened, it was a tactical error not bad luck
Ben and Adam could easily have won if they had made a better decision at the end of ep1. Instead of claiming Arizona, they should have claimed New Mexico. This would have gave them the ability to win by either claiming Texas OR Montana, which would have forced Sam and Brian to play defense and get a lucky 50/50 cointoss guess. Sam and Brian would have gone to claim AZ, which would have now been less useful, since Sam and Brian would need to claim ID to win but Ben and Adam would already be on the way to Texas. Would've made for a short series though..
The funny thing is... Ben and Adam have actually won when they claimed Utah.
You can draw a straight line up from Arizona, through Colorado and Utah to Wyoming. This is due to a weird kink in the border right above the four corners monument!

Wouldn't it also have been possible for Sam and Brian to fly to Seattle and claim Washington in Olympia, drawing a line from California through to Washington, because of the bends in the Idaho border?

But had they won then and there, we wouldn't have had the whole suspense leading up to them visiting Montana

@@ratkeep They never showed what card they got when they pulled it from the deck, they just showed the card later. For all the audience knows they pulled a bad card, cut the footage, then found a good card and showed it later. They should have cut back to the footage of them drawing the card after the reveal, at least then they couldn't be reasonably accused of cheating. Guaranteed they had the footage, and the other team likely saw it before the video was out, so I doubt they actually cheated, but we never saw them draw the card from the deck and turn it around to see that it was the claim state immediately.
9:45 "Adam, Adam, shut the fuck up you're going to get the cops called on us" is what I believe came out of his mouth immediately after the cut.
I always cheer the great editing of these series, but I have to say the bit about the trophy at the end was so hilarious. The funniest gag I've seen in any Nebula bonus content. Even better than the digging a hole song. Thanks as always and can't wait for S2.

Gotta say, I’m loving this concept. This is all the fun parts of the Amazing Race without the more formalized travel structure.

I can't help but root for Ben and Adam. So relatable with the anxiety and exhaustion and joy. And Sam can be pretty easy to root against, his Type A personality seems like it would be difficult to team with.

After you’ve done the game a few times, you should make the budget for flights for both teams be to use only the frequent flyer miles accumulated from the previous seasons of the game

Started watching this series and I only recognized Sam, and I remember at the beginning, sam said something about one other guy with a youtube channel. I am extremely baffled that it turns out that other than Sam, Brian is the only guy with a YT channel. Adam and Ben were absolutely the best part of this series and I'm very mad they don't have their own channels!!!
Really enjoyable series, but I think an overview of the contents of the cards and the veto rules should probably have been at the start of Episode 1, was very peculiar to only hear about... 4/14? cards being an immediate claim right at the end of the whole thing!
Yeah. One instant claim sounds fine for a surprise, but multiple just negated the suspense for who'd claim the state first (pure luck)
The claim shouldn't have been immediate, but after they completed the call...
Or maybe an instant claim isn't valid if it's the last one and requires a flight.

@@monkgogimasedi5265It's actually kind of an easy card. You can get past the restrictions by saying synonyms ("I would like to travel to"), you can avoid saying the city name by referring to the airport abbreviation, and you can just say "correct" instead of "yes".
It's kind of a poorly thought out card for a different reason though, which is that the legality of recording phone calls is iffy depending on where you are in America

Great series! For the future, I would immensely appreciate it if you could provide subtitles - some parts are really really hard to understand, even after two or three times. Plus, it would make the videos accessible to lots more people!
Exactly, I'm surprised that a show with this budget and production quality doesn't have proper subtitles.
And also if they could put the location text on some of the recorded footage it would be more clear exactly where they were than just the diagram.

The irony of a car overheating in the extreme cold.
The cold caused the car to overheat. The coolant had been frozen from the cold, so it couldn't flow when the engine was turned on.

Last week's cliffhanger was definitely a partial spoiler because we knew the game wasn't going to conclude quickly at the end of that fight to Butte. But I still was not able to predict what would end up happening. Well done.

Technically, state border between Utah and Colorado is not fully straight, so you can draw straight line across Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona in this particular order. So Adam and Ben won as soon as they have claimed Utah in Salt Lake City.

The rules dictate that you have to draw a horizontal or vertical line through the states. So while a line starting in Arizona and ending in Wyoming would be a straight line, it wouldn't be the perfectly vertical line they would need to win the game.
If you zoom in at the border between Utah, Colorado, and Arizona, you can see that it actually bends left shortly north of where the 3 states meet. This is where a vertically straight line would be possible

If you ever do a European version, then make it be closer to a game of Risk (total countries claimed) and have additional cards (more rounds) to decide the form of travel (plane, car, boat [for some]) required for at least part of the next journey.
Sam can win as many seasons he wants, but Adam and Ben still won our hearts.
There was so many legitimately amazing twists and suspenses in this video, like the flight going back due to the weather, the car break down after switching rental places, and then the ending hiding behind the statue during the card reading

I don't understand. They had clearance, they were landing, but the head wind was too strong (which, as someone who flies into Wichita KS on a regular basis makes me laugh). Ok, but why not just circle around and come back in with the tail wind or ... just do that in the first place? (or do I have that flipped?)

@@ilRosewood The wind was just one of many factors which led up to the decision to return to SLC.
Because of the wind speed and direction, the pilots would have needed to land on the runway which faces the north (as they would have otherwise exceeded the aircraft's tailwind limit of 10kts on landing).
The issue arises at this airport specifically as there are no instrument navaids for a straight in approach on the northerly runway (RWY 33), largely due to high terrain to the south of the airport. This means that pilots must do a visual circling manouvre in order to land on this runway.
At the time they were trying to land, the visibility was below what would be required to safely perform this visual approach so they had to divert to another airport.

Apparently it's familiar to Sam as well, since he recognized the Starbucks.
So first, I really like these challenges (both Connect 4 and the Circumnavigation). The editing is suspenseful and the text additions add to the comedy. Second I have some ideas for future travel challenges. While I appreciate that time limits and flight scheduling are the main obstacles, so far the adventures of Sam, Adam, Ben, & guest have been in countries/cities that overall communicate in English and have reliable transportation services. Therefore I propose a North-South race across South America. Spanish and Portuguese language skills would be tested, and flexibility in transportation. One team would start in a northern country (i.e. Colombia) and race south to Argentina or Chile. The other team vice versa. The path would have to have limits like stops in at least every biome that exists in South America, or not being allowed to reverse direction always going south or north, though east and west diversions would be permitted. / I also suggest another Connect 4 type game but in another country with many states like India or Mexico or Brazil. / Finally a race to "claim" European cities by only traveling by train could be interesting. Set a time limit but no restrictions on the number or location of cities. The team that "claimed" the most cities when time runs out wins. Thanks for making this content!

Great series, I just wish it were longer! I really enjoyed it. I do feel this could have been done much faster if they weren't so focused on flying everywhere
They were pretty obsessed with the western states that involved flying over driving. those states are super flexible and give you lots of options, but they are HUGE and take a long time to navigate - a factor they never took into account. You also have small capital cities far from the travel hubs - think of how teams wasted time landing in non capitals and driving to Sacramento or Salem. You could quite easily land in Boston - a capital, then drive quickly to providence, Hartford, and Albany. This strategy could quite easily win on day 1.
I was waiting in anticipation soooo much for this.
The game as a whole was great, really fun to watch, quite enjoyable. Can't wait for Season 2!
