- Fairly niche vid, putting the satires Aristophanes' comedic plays in their historical context. Specifically looking at The Acharnians, The Knights, and Peace. Enjoy!

That jab at Kleon about eating shit with the dead might be the funniest thing an ancient person ever wrote
These plays were done at an annual festival that plays were judged, all the important people sat front row .. Like Cleon, the generals, elected officials. Lysistrata points at them In the play & talks to them, breaking the fourth wall. . . His plea went unheard but has echoed for nearly 3 thousand years, long since that place & time has been lost to the present.
I’m so happy I found your channel! I love your videos
Great video man! It's amazing how much you can learn about one civilization from one person's political humor.
I have been known to be fond of a healthy dose of satire from time to time
Bro got the Simon Whistler voice, the Diogenes beard and the Oregon CHAZ outfit, my kinda historian
I've watched this video a few times, but this is the first time that I made the connection that the ~20 year old Aristophanes who wrote those very funny jokes that ring very true about the "vintages" of peace would not have actually experienced Athenian life under all of those circumstances. It makes me wonder who he talked politics with as a teenager, whose experience he was actually drawing upon. I'm reminded of myself as a high schooler in post-9/11 USA and being opposed to the Iraq War but not really being able to articulate why until I started watching The Daily Show. It makes me wonder who was Aristophanes's Jon Stewart? Not like literally, but as a thought exercise, just making me think about what it was really like to live through this time on a day-to-day basis. This is why I watch your videos over and over, I keep getting more out of them. You should change your channel name to Good History Videos 😊
Yeah It's a shame we don't know more about his early life. But he certainly seemed to change his opinions with age. His later plays feel much more cynical and less idealistic. Glad you enjoy the vid :)
You weren't able to articulate why you were against the war in Iraq before watching TV because your opinion hadn't been assigned to you yet.
@@JaMeshuggah Who assigns your opinions to you?

I just watch for the bizarre outfits and obscene references to violent acts, but oh yeah.
Great video 👍
Love this! Thank you x
Good video homes, what is your favourite book on your book shelf?

Lmaoooo can you imagine being there and seeing kleon COPE AND SEETHE. I fucking hate kleon. Aristophanes is an absolute ledge. Euripides is and always will be my fave tho
Aristophanes wrote Assembly Women and parodied Feminism and Communism before they were a thing. It's an interesting read of you get the chance because it's wildly similar to modern people in some ways.
