Dad had significant hearing loss from flying before they got good hearing protection in planes. He had trouble hearing higher tones. He could hear the lower ones fine. As a result, he could hear Beethoven much better than Mozart, because Beethoven came to compose, including lower register instruments in the melody. Traditionally that role was given to higher register instruments, like the violin. For an interesting experiment, put in a pair of foam earplugs to simulate hearing loss. We did this in my Hearing Science class. Wearing the earplugs, we could hear lower pitched voices and tones much better than higher pitched ones. Now, I love Mozart. Doing the assignment, I remember listening to some Mozart music, not really sure what it was. It was disorienting, because the music was not familiar at all. I couldn’t hear the melody, just the instruments with the lower tones. I saw that it was Mozart, and I didn’t really like it. And I love Mozart! My dad didn’t care for Mozart, I think, because he couldn’t hear the melody. He loved Beethoven, and he could hear it.
As the man looked at what he had done, an air of regret befell him. His whole life he thought revenge would complete him and satiate his existential dilemma. But no. His purpose perished the moment he completed his goal. Now he realized, he has nothing to love for. In a way, the act of revenge made him happy but looming emptiness and loneliness started appearing. He regretted that he had been so focused on his goal to murder the one who killed his family, because now he has nothing. His life turned to a new page. A blank page, which felt both exciting and terrifying.
