What you need to know about the Cascadia Subduction Zone | Earthquake Ready or Not

  • The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a 620-mile-long fault that stretches from British Columbia to Northern California, and pressure along the fault is building daily. Right now the fault is locked, but geologists say one day the pressure will become too much and that lock will break. When that happens it’ll result in one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, a magnitude-9 or possibly even greater.

      Who says a tsunami following a Cascadia subduction zone quake will be 1,500 feet high??? 100 feet, maybe, in some locations - serious enough, as it is. It •is• a grave public-safety issue, so don’t distract from it by framing the threat in ridiculous terms.

    • @NASSER-rf6dp
      @NASSER-rf6dp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ColumbiaB would you rather be under prepared or over prepared?

    • @ColumbiaB
      @ColumbiaB 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NASSER-rf6dp - That essentially vacuous query is a false choice, and an attempt to avoid truly important questions: What possible hazards are reasonable to prepare for? And, what is a rational level of preparation for those hazards that are reasonably probable to occur in the foreseeable future?
      Individuals, communities, and governments have to prepare for hazards within the reality of limited resources. In preparing for a hazard, a responsible actor has to weigh the severity of potential damage from a hazard, in conjunction with the likelihood that such an event will happen within a given time frame.
      For example, a 1,500-foot tsunami will almost certainly never happen - and if it did, virtually no “preparation”, short of having moved everyone east of the Cascades, would do any good. So, would I want to be overprepared, as you suggest, for a Cascadia subduction megaquake tsunami - which may have runups up to about a hundred feet - by investing time, materials, and effort in preparing for a hypothetical 1,500-foot tsunami? The answer is, No. That would be a ludicrous waste of resources.

    • @NASSER-rf6dp
      @NASSER-rf6dp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ColumbiaB how much is 1500 feet in meters? Also, I agree that preparing for an event that may never come in your lifetime might be pretty useless in hindsight, and it might be. Especially if that money can go to solving other pressing matters in the region. But, what I think is that if you over prepare, you could sleep peacefully in night knowing you are in less danger of this mega quake, also building up that infrastructure that's resilient towards an earthquake will also be beneficial in case other types of natural disasters hit. But in Cascadia, all that worry might be for nothing. Statistically, you'll probably live and see no earthquake. So it's really up to Cascadians, should they invest too much, or not?

      To build upon Hectarea's comment, when the tsunami flows outward, it'll travel in all directions including south and east where the coastline is further east. Meaning, California is longitudinally east of the Cascadia area.

    Better have your ducks in a row now. Food, water, emergency shelter. Anything you need to survive for an extended period of time. Don't count on the Red Cross to rescue you. Or the Marines, or National Guard. You, as I, will be on your own . I feel ready but continue to make my situation stronger. I live smack in the middle of the Cascadia and geologist talks I have been to say a BIG ONE comes every 240 years on average. We are now 80 years overdue.

    Earthquakes are associated with the sun-earth magnetosphere that is becoming increasingly activated as part of the effects of the 12, 000-year micronova cycle that is now beginning, as noted by north and south magnetic poles on the move toward Sumatra and Java which will become the new Arctic Circle. 12,500-years ago 8/10 of species populations became extinct as the result of the Gothenberg event. The effect was greatest in the Americas, but This will effect greater damage in Eurasia. this time. Volcanoes and a world-wide flood will also accompany this current cataclysm. Humanity has survived at ;east 7 of these events, so we are survivors, if we are ready and prepared, My book, Quantum Knowing: A Train Is on the Tracks covering this in greater detail is available to help.

      Get off the West coast if you can. This isn't fear-mongering; it's recognizing an inevitable, severe impending threat through science. What people do with that information is up to them. If we're lucky, the big one won't hit in our lifetimes, but plenty of geologists and seismologists are saying it's already overdue. Read one report saying all the major roads and airports will be so badly damaged, it will be somewhere between extremely difficult to impossible to even mount rescue efforts. Coastal cities in Canada and the US may be without power, water and food for up to six months. When this earthquake hits, it's going to be the final chapter in the stories of a lot of people.

      @@ianmcginnis5734 I know Taal is not anything in size or magnitude of Yellowstone but mainly that they explode out not just smoke and lava as I once thought and many do still but that it sends out gases, nano particles of glass, etc. One should have masks to wear, eye goggles, dont wash ash off or start car if covered as it clogs and destroys cars, turns into cement type junk (for lack of a better word at this moment). Knowing these things helps those survive these types of eruptions.
