i never really had problems with cmyk printing... but i got me a gerber edge and getting whie gaps... i really needd to l ook into bleed and chooke and overprint

Im confused when to choose to use butt-to-butt registration vs choking, trapping, etc.?

I believe it depends on the artwork. Every art work will require different approach. The end goal is printing wet on wet and achieve the best crisp print without flashing it couple times :)
