Captain from the Navy is the equivalent of Colonel from other the military branches. So despite the fact Captain Picard does hold the title and rank of Captain, he's more fitting for the colonel list.
I felt that in the Sergeant portion - they would have been good to label it as an NCO - Non-Commissioned Officer - this would safely incorporate John-117 and perhaps Corporal Hicks from Aliens. And I agree - a Captain (O-3) in the Marines (Captain Hiller) would be a Lieutenant in the naval structure. I enjoy the content from these creators, and it must have been challenging to do the research, and I'm sure that they had similar discussions while planning out these videos, and aimed at the general audience's general lack of knowledge of military rank/structure.

Suprised at no 40k on this one. There are 3 prime candidates for this: Saul Tarvitz - Line-Captain of the 10th Company Emperor's children, who led the defense of Isstvan III, stalling the heresy. Gavriel Loken - Captain of the Luna Wolves (Sons of Horus). Aided in defense of Isstvan, later went on to serve the Imperium as a Knight-Errant. Nathaniel Garro - Battle Captain of the Death Guard, his actions allowed the Imperium to learn of the betrayal and he became the first Knight-Errant I wouldnt be surprised if they were left due to them being space marines and not normal humans, but idk
I think there is a great number too many captains to fit into a 13-minute video throughout science fiction, we're missing: -the incredible Captain Jacob Keyes from Halo (one of my all-time favorites.) He also served at lower ranks and accomplished great feats, but his greatest was his last stand on the Alpha Array. -Captain Anderson from Mass Effect. A hero beyond reproach to the very end. -Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly, a civilian smuggler but an incredible captain nonetheless as well as being ex-military and having served as an infantry officer. -Captain Titus from Warhammer 40k, not just a valiant Space Marine but the most human one yet in some ways. -Captain Benjamin Sisko of Star Trek, although I understand not putting two entries from the same universe into one video.

Also, there is a general misunderstanding between Hollywood/civilians and the current/former service members, while a critique, this is not anything bad against your channel. There is a major difference between an army and naval captain. Going of the US standard (which is what most of these are based off of out of lore), a captain in most services is as you stated a company commander level officer, or an O-3 on the pay scale. Navy captains however have a double meaning. It may be an O-6, or an army equivalent of a Colonel. Even with this rank however they are not considered the same rank historically, as a naval captain used to have less communication with the chain of command and support structure out of port, and operating far from home. Some naval standards have not been higher than army ones at times because they are better, but because they were sometimes the majority or only contact a nation may have contact with another. In this context a captain begins to take on an ambassadorial role the further back you go in history. Captain is also a title in most navies, simply being the commanding officer of a ship. US Navy ships can have a captain who is a Lieutenant Commander (small patrol craft), Commanders (destroyers and submarines), or Captains (Cruisers and other large vessels, sea and air squadrons, and major shore commands). You start to note this in the next episode with Captain Keys, though I assume that his Lt bars are a misunderstanding by the creators, as assuming command of so many vessels before the PoA would almost certainly ensure he had moved up the paygrade scale. Again, I don’t mean to say that the video was bad or poorly written, just misunderstood, though admittedly it could be hard to understand. Awesome work otherwise and many thanks for the content.
Someone has already mentioned him but why is Captain John Sheridan not on the list? He pretty much told the two most powerful races in the galaxy to take a hike. He blew up the capital city of Zha'dum by dropping nukes on it AND HIMSELF and lived to tell the tale. Well, sort of lived. He died but came back. Sheridan risked life and limb when he got the Vorlon ambassador Kosh so angry that Kosh came close to killing Sheridan in anger. Sheridan survived assassination attempts, Earth Force bureau 13 interrogation, and a hand to hand fight with multiple Shadows. He brought together most of the non aligned worlds to build an interstellar alliance the likes of which the galaxy had never seen before. Granted, he did become the first president of the Interstellar Alliance after resigning his Earth Force commission but still, he was a Captain during his time as commander of Babylon 5.

Yes and no. Captain in land forces is a rank, while Captain in a navy is both a rank and a position. Not every Commanding officer is a Captain, but every Captain is in charge of something. Captain is the most senior non-flag rank of a navy, and nowadays, to avoid confusion, the captain of a ship is referred to as its commanding officer. That said, a Commander (rank) can hold the position of Captain lon a ship, but is mre usually referred to as commanding officer, exactly in order to avoid confusion. BUT to add to the confusion, certain navies have multiple captain ranks, usually 3: Captain rank 3 - 2 - 1 in ascending order for the Russian Navy, Corvette, Frigate and Ship-of-the-line Captain for the French and formerly Austro-Hungarian navies are the equivalents of Lieutenant Commander, Commander and Captain respectively in the RN and USN.

Captian in the Air Force is an O-3 where as a Captian(Rank) in the Navy is an O-6. That's a huge difference! The Navy also gets a little confusing becuase the person in charge of a ship is a Captian, but does not have to have the Captian rank. For example, on smaller ships the Captian of the ship might only be a Lt Commander O-5, but is still called a Captain.
Captain John Sheridan (on B5) fights aliens thousands of years more advanced than us, and essentially calls in a nuke strike on his own position. Still not good enough for you?

an Army/Marines/Air Force captain is not the same as a Navy (and space-based alternatives) Captain. the latter is equivalent to a Colonel in the other branches of the military. Similarly a Police Captain might be equivalent to an Army/Marine Major in many cases. Picard ,Kirk et al should be in their own line of videos.

The second poll was tricky for me. I was torn between Levi, Rex and Steve. Ended up going Rex because while all of then are paragons of soldiering I feel Rex is the most captain of the lot. Levi and Steve Rogers are great soldiers but I feel they spend more time as individuals/squad level commanders while Rex is a captain first and foremost.
This seems to be missing some who should also be counted such as Honer Harrtington though she goes from Ensin to Admerial, Captain Buck Roger and Captain John Sheridan. there are probablly others.

Where is James T. Kirk (Star Trek), Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek), Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly), Bruno J. Global (Macross) or Honor Harrington (Honorverse). Hell even Captain Tylor (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor) is a better choice than many on that list. And almost anyone with the rank of Captain from 40K would also fit the bill.
I've been meaning to put together a March Madness-style elimination poll for Best Starship Captain. To keep it from being dominated by Trek (not because they're all as notable as Kirk or Janeway, but simply because it names a lot of its ship captains), I'd figured limiting the entries to two or three per fictional universe - but that limits things a lot. Star Wars has a ton of named _pilots,_ for example, but not a lot of relevant starship captains. Opening it up to the rank itself rather than specifying _starship_ captains might work.

Similarly over in Star Wars, Han Solo is a captain when we first see him in ANH, he's captain of the Millennium Falcon. That is his title, even if it wasn't his rank with the Empire prior.

You are mixing up the military rank of captain with the position as a captain of a ship.
A captain in the navy and air force is the equivalent of a colonel in the army. A captain in the army is the equivalent of a lieutenant in the navy and air force.
Yes and no. Captain in land forces is a rank, while Captain in a navy is both a rank and a position. Not every Commanding officer is a Captain, but every Captain is in charge of something. Captain is the most senior non-flag rank of a navy, and nowadays, to avoid confusion, the captain of a ship is referred to as its commanding officer. That said, a Commander (rank) can hold the position of Captain lon a ship, but is mre usually referred to as commanding officer, exactly in order to avoid confusion.
BUT to add to the confusion, certain navies have multiple captain ranks, usually 3: Captain rank 3 - 2 - 1 in ascending order for the Russian Navy, Corvette, Frigate and Ship-of-the-line Captain for the French and formerly Austro-Hungarian navies are the equivalents of Lieutenant Commander, Commander and Captain respectively in the RN and USN.
@@joshuawells835 One correction to that, an Air Force Captain is the same rank/pay grade as an Army or Marine Corps Captain (E-3), and not equal to a Colonel. A Navy Captain is the equivalent of an Air Force Colonel, or a Colonel in the other branches.

Captian in the Air Force is an O-3 where as a Captian(Rank) in the Navy is an O-6. That's a huge difference! The Navy also gets a little confusing becuase the person in charge of a ship is a Captian, but does not have to have the Captian rank. For example, on smaller ships the Captian of the ship might only be a Lt Commander O-5, but is still called a Captain.
Captain John Sheridan (on B5) fights aliens thousands of years more advanced than us, and essentially calls in a nuke strike on his own position. Still not good enough for you?

To everyone who is complaining about the army/navy captain comparisons the description said best human fighters with the rank of "captain" therefore it doesn't matter if the ranks aren't equal for the examples they are still ranked "captain" and therefore are on the "captain" list.

an Army/Marines/Air Force captain is not the same as a Navy (and space-based alternatives) Captain. the latter is equivalent to a Colonel in the other branches of the military. Similarly a Police Captain might be equivalent to an Army/Marine Major in many cases.

He deserved to be the rank of Brigade CO but Asohka took that position being the Padawan of Anakin who was overall CO of the 501st. And yes, it's called the 501st Legion but it's name given to elite units, its size is actually a brigade

The second poll was tricky for me. I was torn between Levi, Rex and Steve. Ended up going Rex because while all of then are paragons of soldiering I feel Rex is the most captain of the lot. Levi and Steve Rogers are great soldiers but I feel they spend more time as individuals/squad level commanders while Rex is a captain first and foremost.
This seems to be missing some who should also be counted such as Honer Harrtington though she goes from Ensin to Admerial, Captain Buck Roger and Captain John Sheridan. there are probablly others.

Where is James T. Kirk (Star Trek), Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek), Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly), Bruno J. Global (Macross) or Honor Harrington (Honorverse). Hell even Captain Tylor (The Irresponsible Captain Tylor) is a better choice than many on that list. And almost anyone with the rank of Captain from 40K would also fit the bill.
I've been meaning to put together a March Madness-style elimination poll for Best Starship Captain. To keep it from being dominated by Trek (not because they're all as notable as Kirk or Janeway, but simply because it names a lot of its ship captains), I'd figured limiting the entries to two or three per fictional universe - but that limits things a lot. Star Wars has a ton of named _pilots,_ for example, but not a lot of relevant starship captains. Opening it up to the rank itself rather than specifying _starship_ captains might work.

Heroes is plural for hero, there is an improper apostrophe on the word on your thumbnail. The apostrophe in this case would indicate ownership "the hero's sword". If there are multiple heroes it would be "the heroes' swords". I'm on a quest to inform people of the correct apostrophe usage as it is a common mistake that bothers me! I'm sorry
