That's the way to do it! Most BL-Designer-Sets consist of standard parts You can get in other sets and on bricklink. And You can get most minifigures from PaB on the Lego shop. No need to pay inflated prices on the secondary market. Wo cares about some different colours of the leaves as long as they look good and plausible.
I agree! Just way too hard to justify those inflated costs! It also adds a little bit of your own creativity to the set!
That’s the way to do it with rare/limited-run sets! Especially if you have a good Lego collection already. Sometimes a good option for regular sets, too.
Frex, Lion Knight’s Castle is awesome!
…but not $450-awesome, at least to me. But then I thought that I’ve got a lot of Lego, and had a lot of Castle Lego as a kid, so I bet that I’ve already got most of the parts to build it. Checked Rebrickable and made a list, and between Bricks&Pieces and Bricklink, I’ve managed to get almost all the additional pieces for about $100-and about half of that was minifig parts and horse barding. All I need now are the dark azure plates and the medium nougat roof thatching. I decided that there’s just no way I’m paying $5-8 _each_ for the cloth elements (2 flags and the knight’s cape)-I’ll substitute something from my collection. So it won’t be perfect, but for about a quarter of the cost of buying the set, that sounds like a deal to me.
Heck yeah! Absolutely this! There’s also that sense of achievement that you were able to put it together that way!
It looks amazing! Good to know that there are places you can get custom sticker for builds
Impressive organization as always! Love the idea of doing a Black Falcon fortress, looks really good. Great video!
Thank you so much! A really fun build overall and feels so good to see it in person from all gathered parts!
Brickstickershop is my goto for replacement and custom stickers for sets.
Great build think I might add this to my collection too by parting it out. Excellent job 👍
Such a great price on that sticker sheet! Thanks so much! Have fun parting it out!
Just built the clone version of this from Joooooy and it’s so cool!! Way better than expected
Modern Lego has SPOILED you all with the separate bags making life too easy. We used to just have a big pile of lego and hunt for parts and build like you are doing. Also, whats with the 30 smaller plates? Why dont they just use a larger baseplate, I like the larger baseplates.
lolol I have been building some of my older 90's sets using those instructions. Can be frustrating for sure. I personally like the building process being more chill and not so much playing the "how is this picture different than the previous one?" game haha.
Love how accessible the interior is. Might have to review the part list and see if I can source most of the pieces from my sorted bulk. I can't remember why I missed it from the designer program but certainly worth the build.
Yeah the interior accessibility with the swinging wall is awesome. I want to incorporate that into any MOC I can moving forward!
Great video of a great set. Unfortunately reseller prices exploded, so it's nearly unaffordable right now.
Interesting! May i ask if you can help me to find all the pieces? I would like to do the same thing, but it's difficult for me to find and i don't have enough time. Please let me know how can i made it and pay just 90$, because i actually reach 250$+ if i start from 0.. i don't know where you found them so cheap. plz help me
Unfortunately I don't have time to help you find all the parts, but Bricklink is the best place to start. I also only spent $90 USD becuause I had so many parts in my collection already. Yes, starting from zero would be much more expensive. Plus I swapped a few parts here and there if I didn't have a piece that I felt was too important to save money. I just went through the parts list on Bricklink and started pulling what I had in my collection first and putting all the parts I didn't have into a wanted list. It takes some time to move stuff around within Bricklink wanted lists to find the best prices. It is tedious and takes time I'm afraid. So it really comes down to time vs cost and which is worth more to you. Good luck!
I think we've been spoiled with the latest castle sets. You need to remember that castle in the forest came out way before the latest castle techniques were used in official lego sets. For the period it came out in, that was perhaps the pinnacle of what you could do.
Still a good set. Will look at making it from my Lion Knights Castle. :)
Oh for sure! That’s a great point. I feel really lucky coming back to this on the heels of the Lion Knights Castle release! I have my nostalgia for the really old sets even though they are not as polished and then appreciation for the brand new stuff!
@@JJJBricks the sets may be less polished, but the amount of printed pieces and number of minifigs and horsies was astonishing! I so wish I had the Black Knights Castle remade with new techniques (and proper shield / horse barding prints
@@JJJBricks I am not really sure how hard it is for them to make a new print for a piece they already have, but technically they already have the blue and red barding. They just need to change the prints to a dragon - simple black and / or gold print. Fingers crossed they realize that the Bricklink sets are going to sell onky as long as they are new and spicy (and that they can't just sell lion knights, falcons and forestmen forever). If not ... well, tehre's always DnD ... X_x
I would LOVE to see them make a new faction to add to the lore. It feels like every time they sort of went outside classic castle, they leaned too far into the wacky or fantasy too much. Ex. Next knights or fantasy kingdom. There may have been folks that enjoyed it, but that’s not what I’m looking for personally. There are always new castles to explore, cultures, villages etc.
Great set, but with the Lion Knight's castle existing, I don't regret missing this one, the bricklink sets are expensive
I agree with this sentiment. It’s design is nice, but the price point is tough to swallow
umm actually stalactites hang from the ceiling and stalagmites grow from the floor. everything else in the video is 100% accurate tho
I agree about the fact that forestmen should not living in such castle. IMO they should hide in small places...
@@JJJBricks in the 90's I was a kid and was already thinking that lego foretmen hideouts were not sneaky enough, too easy to spot by other factions... I never got any that time lol
hahahaha that's awesome. Truly not very sneaky. It was always more like they were just Robin Hood type folks who enjoyed their quiet in the forest, but were ready to fight when a fight came to them!
creator wouldn't have been compensated on the secondary market either way, same with Lego, its an interesting conundrum in that regard.
Totally true. I supported several Bricklink sellers though which is good!
Dont feel bad about buying the parts... buying the set on the secondary market doesn't support the creator either
They offer the instructions for free so they officially offer people the possibility to build these sets with their own parts.
Yeah that is fair. kinda a shame actually. I mean I like the free instructions. It would be nice if Lego gave the creator a kickback for every instruction download or something like that.
I enjoyed this video, your "hot takes" and review. But boy oh boy you were so overly apologetic. Sorry for not "supporting the creator", sorry for your valid criticisms on the build. sorry for what you called your "ramblings". Like this is my first video I saw of you, but boy I hope your confidence grows and you stop talking like a nervous rabbit. I love hot takes, I love honest opinions. Just own it.
I definitely released this video on Sunday thinking for some reason it was Monday.. literally didn’t think of it until hours later. So this is Monday’s video!
