Hello Grant. My three year old son watches this video couple of times a day from about a year now. This is the only video on TH-cam that he still finds interesting after watching hundred of times. I think one day he will become an automatic gate engineer 😀
These gate ideas were excellent! I am figuring out how to put a gate to my upward sloping driveway and this video has helped me think way outside the box on how to do it!
Hi Grant, Steve here from FNQ AUTOMATIC GATES in Cairns Queensland I love your work mate you really know your stuff very well - you are a inspiration Cheers 👍
Hi I am working on a set of Lifting hinges, Just a basic set" my Blacksmithing skills are fine regarding making the hinges. But watching you video has given me better ideas. Like yourself i have to work out the maths. a good video though.
Cool video and projects. Gates sure can be challenging when space is tight. Am up against that right now, which is what led me to this video. But these ideas all seem geared towards folks with big bucks, and that's not me.
Hi Grant We have been considering fencing the side of our house where the double garage is located. This meant that we also needed double width gates in line with the garage. This was a problem I was scratching my head about until I saw your video. Our issue was that our property border curved inwards by about 300mm in front of the garage, whereas the rest of our border is straight. We couldn't have swing gates because it would not allow us to park in our driveway when the cars were there. Sliding gates were also out of the question because the curve in our border meant that the 2 gates would not meet in the middle. Your video gave us the answer with the panel opening gates. This now means that we have the option of opening the gate to the right, lining up along the straight edge border or around the corner on the left side. Now all I have to do is to find someone who can make it for me. I am on the Central Coast of NSW, do you have any suggestions? Thank you for your ideas. Regards Kevin
Seems some of these projects were done for the cool factor, rather than cost. I think the ones that go into the ground will have more ongoing costs than normal.
Have you done, (or know of anyone that has) built an "enclosed pocket" for a sliding gate to protect it from the environmental elements such as rain and pine needles.
Hello . The bi-fold gate at 4:25 is very interesting . I have only ever seen automatic bi-fold gates With a swing arm motor like what you have shown . Is there a reason why people don’t use under ground motor drives on bi-fold gates ?
Hi For the gate that open a 140 degrees can you explain some more please Because I what to do same to my gate at home I know normal arms open to 90 degrees So how can larger angle be achieved? Thanks
Hello kind sir, may I ask what motor you used for opening the doors at 2:50? I have the same problem and the beninca engine does not work, and my gates are tilted as well.
Love this. Looking to install a gate on a driveway that slopes up about 20 degrees I can slide or swing. Don’t want dogs to be able to push open (3 Great Danes)
Gate maker here and have seen these offset bottom hinged gates before, but where do you get them. Here in the mountains of Southern oregon that would very handy.
Hi Grant, Nice video. Unbelievable installations. Could you please advise if possible? I have installed a double swing gate and have a stopper in the middle of the driveway which itself is a hazard. Does the TDA ZK300DC motor really needs a stopper? Can't it be programmed/ limit switch adjust to stop automatically? Also, there is a bit of play when gate is closed. I guess a skinny person can enter just pushing it. Would appreciate your comments. Thanks mate.
I'm not at all familiar with your opener, but you should be able to adjust the limits to where you want without a stop in middle, then add a 12/24 vdc lock onto gate leaves to stop any forced movement or entry
I have an issue. I want to get an electric gate on my driveway which is straight but the driveway gate will over lap the entrance gate. Again not an issue but the entrance gate has steps and not flush with the footpath so how would i get the gate to open and go past my walkway which is about 20m higher?
Great video! Sadly you’re not based in Sydney but your website is so informative! Do you know anyone or company makes and installs the gate at 8.35 and if you think if it’s practical and doesn’t vibrate causing noise during a windy day? What would the name of that gate be? Thanks
I would like to do the underground gate model, because I'd like the gate to be +10ft tall. & I would like to make the underground mechanism or electronics accessible.
I'm looking for some uphill gate hinges. Some hinges say they are not for use with automatic openers, but I want to make it open automatically. My gate will be wrought iron 14 feet wide (nominal), and the driveway goes up 7 1/2 degrees. The gate comes powder coated already so I'd prefer to bolt it on somehow rather than welding if that is advisable. (Alternatively it would have to open outward into the roadway a bit but it's on a corner or T so that might be workable.) What would you use?
I use standard ball bearing hinges we have here in Australia and custom make brackets that either bolt on or are welded to the gate frame to make them rise by what ever amount needed and at what ever angle. See www.grantsautomation.com.au/index.php?page=33 for more details, which is a page from our website. The size of the motor needed depends on the slope and weight of the gate. We will be making a video about uphill swing gates some time.
I have a hillside gate, similar to the fifth one you are showing. I would like to install a gate opener, but I am not sure which kind would work for it. Do you have any recommendations or advice?
You do need a much more powerful motor for rising gates because you are lifting a portion of the gates weight as opposed to just getting it moving. How much more powerful depends on the weight of the gate and how much it is rising. See www.grantsautomation.com.au/index.php?page=33 on my website for more information.
@@automaticGatesExplained Thank you for the link and info! Do these gate openers have to have any other special features? Do you recommend any particular brand/model?
The ones I've seen use a flexible wire cable looped around two sheaves at each end of the inside panel. The lower part of the cable is anchored to the ground and the upper section of the cable is attached to the outer panel. When the inside gate is driven the outside gate gets dragged along.
A bi-fold vinyl gate in the Freedom Brighton style for a driveway entrance. Finding the correct wheels and hinges for 6'x6' panels and how to install them is tricky. Do you have any tips?
I am having a self opening metal gate installed at my house for security purposes. It will be solid as to not be able to look in. The gate will be about 25 feet long with a height of 6 feet. I would like to know if I will have problems with the weight? What do you recommend? Thank you.
Hi thanks for the video lots of information. Found your video doing research. I fabricate and install gates/gate openers. I done telescopic sliding gates and bifold swing. but never tried uphill swing gate. Any tips on designing the hinges. I only know that the lower hinge needs to be offset but what needed for the top hinge and the gate motor like an FAAC 415.
Wow, well done, the top hinges for rising swing gates just need to be aligned with the offset bottom hinges that is their centres need to be on the same line. The motor just needs to be powerful enough to lift the weight of the gate. Check this page out on my website www.grantsautomation.com.au/index.php?page=33
Off the self rising gate hinges do have a ball joint but I never have, as we custom make the mounting brackets for the hinge so the amount of rise can be adjusted, maybe I should make a video on how this is done.
Really appreciated the presentation 👌 tried to contact you re the garage gate upswept offset hinge but says my email is not valid. Won't accept my normal email
...but then I see the gate that opens like an asian bamboo fan...now I want the plans for that! That could survive a Canadian winter if you designed the motors to open and close via chains from the top of the supports.
A safety edge on a closing gate must still make contact with a vehicle before the gate will reverse and if a vehicle is moving damage can still be done. We tend to use photocells, these are much safer because if a vehicle enters the pathway of a closing gate the gate will reverse before any contact with the vehicle is made. What does your "machine directive" say to that?
@@automaticGatesExplained it's not about vehicles, it's about people. In 2015 in the UK two children were killed due to gates having no anti crush mechanism. Photo cells don't always pick people up. I just wanted to make you aware , it's was nothing personal, the gate it self looks very nice.

Very cool! I have never seen a gate at such an angle!
Almost every one of your videos is very inspiring
I like this one 5:40 ther one that bends around the corner. I wish I can have this for my small link house.

This is a great video. I thought that I'd be very limited to the type of gate that I could have for my driveway. How very wrong I was 😊.
Love the grey tilting gates - Look great

The double swing gates are something I need, our driveway drops to the right and slopes uphill. Do you sell the hinges to the U.K.?
We custom design and make the mounts for hinges on uphill gates to suit the gate, posts, slope and opening angle.

That isn't any particular brand, it's just a generic looking motor we made up because it depends on where you live what motors are available

So long as you have a large enough motor and the gate doesn't touch the ground when moving it will be fine

None of the gates comply to the machine directive, all gates must have a safety edge system, with a force test certificate. All very dangerous.
A safety edge on a closing gate must still make contact with a vehicle before the gate will reverse and if a vehicle is moving damage can still be done.
