Enough already! Bob Backlund was fantastic as a babyface and perfect as champion, FOR THAT ERA. He was a great amateur with freakish strength and always worked hard for the sellout crowds ( yes I personally attended many shows) against a variety of opponents. Naturally, after 5-6 years fans got tired of the formula and it was time for a change.
I think Larry is way off base. Backlund was a great champion. I'm a fan of Superstar Billy Graham, but they picked the right man in Backlund. Bob Backlund holding the belt for 6 year was believable because he had the skills and the strength to take on all comers. No way would it have been believable for the Superstar to have held the title that long. Graham didn't have the skills to keep the belt. Backlund was credible and believable because he was the real deal. In a shoot, Backlund would have taken out Graham, Hogan, and Warrior.
