Etsy plant scams are all over the place, too. The shop is almost always located in Sri Lanka and has "Ceylon" in the shop name.

@@ElsieJay and you can't request refund through Etsy, you have to dispute it with Paypal. When I went to report the shop to Etsy it was already gone. Now I keep seeing them pop up with new names like CeylonAce and stuff like that
I don't buy at Etsy anymore, i got only problems. I go on eBay and i'm 99/100 happy with the sellers and products.
What happened to Etsy, wasn't it supposed to be a handmade item type of website where sellers and buyers can do easy business with each other? All I see now is cheap dropshipped Chinese shit and scams, I almost fell for that Ceylon page too because I really wanted some variegated Alocasia corms. Luckily PayPal didnt even let a payment through to them.

Reminds of when a scammer called me trying to get my health insurance info. He even said it's not a scam I have your SS #. I said everyone has it it was stolen. I refused to give him my info because he said he was calling from the insurance company. I said then you have my info. He said that's not how it works. When I kept him on the phone for 30 minutes he finally called me a F'n moron and hung up. Then called back and left a message filled with curses. Still insisting he was from my insurance company. 😂

Thank you for letting people know about this. I have been very diligent letting other people know about these things. Because how crappy this stuff is going out. The fact that you made it right for that kid that got scammed, what a beautiful thing to do.
so gross....I just got to the part where they used their deceased child's name....How could something like that be used just to pull at someone's heart and then scam them? Also, the fact that they are taking advantage of kids is awful. In the plant community, we can all relate to that time we just started getting interested and how much we wanted "that plant" we had fallen in love with. I hope someone helps that kid get their plant at some point. Lol. Also the "I'm really sad right now, really sad" is pathetic. Edited to say I'm at the end of the video and I'm so glad that kid got their plant!

Thanks for bringing attention to this. Scammers exist in every strata from housing rentals to new home purchases, pet sales, and plant sales... and those are just from my personal encounters. Jeez, just think if they actually put their energies into something legit.
That's the same Camaroon arseholes who stole money from me. They knew I was a single mum, struggling and had saved for the plant.
I learned a lot from that interaction and am even more careful now, but if you don't know what to look for...they can be very convincing.
The one I dealt with was, he had done his research and it genuinely was convincing...until the end. He gave himself away by blocking me, then reinstated the account to try to scam more off me.
I'm in Australia, we do not import here, and he was trying to tell me he WAS going to ship the plant, of course, but he needed more money for a phyto certificate.

That is plain ludicrous.
I actually strung him along for a bit then got angry, called him out for the disgusting scum he was...and he did that same thing of repeatedly trying to ring me.
I blocked them.
I posted in a group warning others and didcovered there that its a syndicate running out of Camaroon, and they even use locals in AUstralia to seem more convincing.
A huge red flag too is if someone contacts YOU offering a plant after you've commented on a group, rather than you contacting them from a fb ad.
I know that now...an expensive, sad lesson. It really messed me up for a while.
In Austalia we also get endless Indonesian sellers trying to convince us to smuggle plants into the country.

I've been scammed. The last person that TRIED to scam me, pulled every stunt you said: the inability to use PayPal, the same cash apps you mentioned, the gift card. She even wanted me to put it in her daughter's account under "Family and Friends", so she didn't get charged any business fees. She added a 2nd plant at a very good price too. It was everything you said. I finally said, "I can't do this, I'm not comfortable with it." She got a little pissy, but oh well. Don't be a thief.
So sad over something so beautiful. People have no shame.

Facebook is riddled with scammers. I wish FB would do alot more to rid scam profiles from their platform. I used to buy from fb plant groups but not anymore I only trade/buy from local groups that can meet up. The internet is a blessing and a curse.

There's always small give aways like this but it's easy to overlook the signs when you want something bad enough (speaking from the experience of buying a pothos node sold as obliqua🤦)

They're disgusting exploitative people and they're going to hell alright, and I'm saying that as an atheist. I'm annoyed that they still tried to continue the ruse even though they got caught already, they think people are so dumb when what's really happening is that they're preying on people who assumed their good will.
That aside, thank you for making this video. I don't know what you would label your recent videos as, "deep dive" plant videos maybe? I really like them, it's a type of video that's rarely been done because of the amount of effort that it takes to make it, but that's also what makes it so good. It's like delving deeper beneath the surface of the houseplant hobby.

And well done for highlighting the problems people face with scammers, although some are much better in their tactics than this particular people/persons don’t think they were particularly the brightest spark, however a child would not know that and it’s despicable what they did to the kid.
Well Done!! This is very informative, some onlines plant stores kind of scam people too. I have bought plants from an online store and them they send a random plant with the name of the plant I ordered. I had to contact the Better Business Bureau to get a refund.

I actually got scammed by that person with the black Albo but it was for a Thai con that wouldn’t say how long shipping would be until after I paid, then it said 2 months to come! Which ik would kill the plant if it was real.. I got my money back

thank you for showing us how to do research when it comes to buying plants online. i bought a plant off of fb market and i’m really glad i wasn’t scammed, i got it early with an extra plant. i’m just gonna go to in person nurseries now.. 🥲
