  • I bet you've never seen a Malaysian dance where dancers eat and drink during the performance! Sayau Kalambujang is a traditional dance originally performed in rituals (Moginum) by the Dusun Tatana, a subethnic group of the Kadazandusun, the largest indigenous group in Sabah, Malaysia. Now, it is also performed as a cultural show and at social occasions and festivals. The dance is normally led by a male dancer and circled by a group of female dancers (in some cases, these dancers also carry food and drinks). In the middle of the dance, the dancers sit and feast on the food, smoke tobacco, and chew betel nuts. The food served includes traditional dishes of Sabah, such as sago paste, kolupis (made of glutinous rice and coconut milk wrapped in silad leaves), and pinjaram cake. This dance group is from KDCA Kuala Penyu.
Mainly residing in Kuala Penyu in the southwest of Sabah, the Dusun Tatana people are claimed by some to be descendants of Chinese immigrants from China. Though there are no formal historical records to support this claim, the Dusun Tatana practice some Chinese traditions, such as celebrating Chinese New Year. What do you think?
