Piston Pump 1 1/2" Wet end overhaul (PART 1)

Standard wet end overhaul of a 1 1/2" piston pump showing some great tips to get the most of your pump and service it without breaking stuff. Buckets are leather , Valves are rubber injected moulded, Packing is high speed graphite impregnated teflon, all other rubbers are insertion type. I have been servicing these pumps for many years and have learnt a few tricks about them in that time, some from old blokes some from my own experiences. I hope you enjoy this . Thanks for showing how to put the cups back on the shaft. Saw it done 60 years ago but even then I remember uncle B having to disassemble again because the cups were put in backwards
Now to find USA parts

Do the washers at both ends and in-between the leather cups serve any purpose other than longevity?

Without them you will only have a soggy floppy ball of wet leather, the pump does not work without them, give it a go though, should be a fun experiment!

I have seen some myers pumps where the rod was pinned into the brass piston in the dry end so you cant turn the rod.

Thank -you, Yes sometimes the rod is pinned on mine too, mostly they used a brass pin which shears off when you try turn it, if the pin is too strong you have to pull the oil end apart to pull the piston out the front end

@@shedasaurus This one got me today, double nutted the shaft to pull it...no go. Pulled apart the oil end and found it the little roll pin in the piston, shaft came right out after pulling the pin. Now to find piston and crank, part numbers stamped into them are 3922 and 3923.

It should start dripping once it wears a bit, don't over tighten the gland packing as it will wear the shaft prematurely

yes, can prime up to 7m, better to have a foot valve though for that depth

I am writing this on behalf of my father (77 years old), he has this pump and has watched your videos. He is having trouble with what he calls the gear box end of the pump - the other end to what you have shown. He has tried talking to SpoutVal Australia but it seems no one can help him. Do you have a video of serving the other end? Your assistance is greatly appreciated

These pumps being made for over 100 years in different places , countries, have numerous size bolt heads depending on where the company bought the bolts from or what they specified and wether the bolt is metric or imperial. The cylinder endcap/cover bolts for instance will often be different size heads on the bolts, of the same size thread, on the same part. About 40% of pumps have this anomaly . The video was made when it took 6 hours to upload a 15 min video on my computer to youtube so information was condensed. Thanks for watching
