Not at all it was always RTEs way of getting money out of the people, it's just been reworked because of technology, ie laptop's and such, what's a TV need a license for, once upon a time rte was the only channel much of Ireland got they still had to pay a fee for the broadcast 🇮🇪✝️🇮🇪

I have never had a TV licence and I certainly never will.
Because of my job and the need for a spotless record I reluctantly have to buy the wretched thing but I would love to be able to cancel the licence and stop paying for a rip-off service.
RTE needs to be made into a small and purely public service syicking only to news and documentary programming and items of purely Irish interest. Shows imitating foreign soaps and "reality" programming should be scrapped.
This 💩 show continues. End the TV 📺 licence fee that we are lawfully compelled to pay.
As a fellow Carroll, I agree. I’m not entirely sure that the law is completely clear though. Most people who have served prison time with regard to tv license in this country have served that time for non payment of fine, issued by court, for the “offense” of not being in possession of said license. The system catches you either way once you show up in front of them. The point about “the state needs rte, was, in previous decades made about aer lingus, and even Waterford crystal.

It's pure tax evasion - these cars they got "loaned" for years were infact Benefit in Kind awards. (BIK) which they should have paid tax on, but avoided it because the car was not in their name but given as a loan. Renault is embroiled in this too, and I guess it won't be long until they are pulled in to answer some questions!!
I don't watch TV so I missed most of this crap. Thank God. The Government is trying to save RTE now. I guess they'll have to make a choice: drop RTE or lose the next election.

Martin, you are 100% correct. Up to 1990s RTEs output content across radio and TV was very good and high quality output. Since then the quality of output has declined very badly, to the extent that it doesn't justify the licence fee demanded. I believe in public service broadcasting but RTE has allowed itself to become nothing more than wokist TASS/Pravda outlet since the turn of the century.

Why would you be embarrassed? Unless you work for RTE. There is very little ordinary Irish citizens can do in the face of public sector financial mismanagement and squandering of public money. RTE needs to be reformed from top to bottom and the so called "stars" need to be got rid of or let sink or swim in privately sponsored TV and radio.

Most people don't seem to connect events and try to figure things out and ask questions so they don't see the bigger picture.
Added to this is the problem that many people weren't interested in even everday politics until 2020 so they have nothing to build information on.

I recently watched the old 'Strumpet City' series on a DVD box set I found in a second-hand shop. I'd almost forgotten just how good old TV shows used to be. And then my wife wonders why I don't watch TV any more.....
It is actually on TH-cam now. Great series. I remember the late Marian Finucane interviewing the late James Plunkett author of Strumpet City. She asked him if he watched TV now. He said no. He said what is on nowadays is useless, so he does not watch.

I haven't watched TV for a couple or three decades now, apart from some sport and the occasional documentary, so all this content is news to me. I find it utterly reprehensible that rte have the audacity to air such programmes. I think it is time to rip out the rotten core of the establishment and try to do a better job ourselves. Paddy O'Gorman once did a radio segment regarding people who did jail time rather than pay the fines imposed for not having a TV licence. They considered it better to serve the time rather than fork out for the fine for non-payment. Licence collectors are finding it increasingly difficult to gain access to apartment blocks and gated communities. Modern TV sets do not emit any radio waves detectable by TV detector vans since the demise of CRT screens a decade or so ago. A similar development in small radios led to the abolition of the radio licence back in the 1960's. People using the service can no longer be detected and brought to court as effectively as in the olden days. There were plans to alter the TV licence to a general media levy, patable by ALL households and premises regardless of what device they used or what service the watched. One could see a tax being levied on subscription services in the near future if the licence is reduced or abolished. The bad aspect of the current system is that the poorest people pay the same as the richest people. There would be a lot less resentment and resistance to publically funded and run broadcast services if a reduced cost was levied on the poor as happens with other taxes.
And the state of them trying to put a tax on Netflix 😂
