it has "head spiders" instead of "headcrabs" in sven coop. i guess it is a modification of sven coop team? because we clearly see they are not spiders in the original.
These zombies are scarier and more effective then regular ones because these ones still have sentience, as seen by the fact they talk, drive, pilot, and use guns and ambushes, the reason they’re trying to kill you is simply because there so unimaginably hungry
The whole "Braiiiins" thing is cliché now, but I think it's effective here. Funny, in the 90s and before they said brains, in the 2000s they yelled, gibbered, snarled and wheezed and from then on they clicked and croaked.
Another big factor that makes them scary is the low poly models. They are detailed enough that you know what they are, but simple enough that your brain fills in the gap. And the imagination can be pretty scary.
They Hunger came out before The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead 2004 etc... and it was very widely distributed among gamers at the time. Maybe it's custom made. Umbrellas irl could be made stronger, but maybe it would be too heavy, expensive to make, harder to break (we don't want sales to drop do we?)

Imagine you city is being attacked by a some type of zombie militia pulling everyone out of their homes for eat em alive later and the police and the local military can't help you because most of their buddies have turned into gun wielding zombies that can use military vehicles
I think perhaps this mod is so old that the "classic" zombies (Frankenstein, etc) were still what people were imagining when they heard the word zombie. The kind that would rise from their grave and go around eating peoples brains. The modern zombie came about mid-00's up to about 2012, where it was usually based on a pandemic, parasite or virus in some form, usually inspired by rabies, and we got movies like Zombieland and games like Dead Rising and Dead Island. Half Life might have even been among the first to do this with the headcrabs. I kinda miss that trend ngl, but it got really overdone to the point of parody.
I remember completing this whole mod on Sven Coop with a friend like 3-4 years ago. We loved it. I admit being two helps especially with puzzles. And yes, shooting the pilot of an helicopter makes it explode.
Fun Fact: A cactus (plural cacti, cactuses, or less commonly, cactus) is a member of the plant family Cactaceae, a family comprising about 127 genera with some 1750 known species of the order Caryophyllales. The word "cactus" derives, through Latin, from the Ancient Greek κάκτος, kaktos, a name originally used by Theophrastus for a spiny plant whose identity is now not certain. Cacti occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most cacti live in habitats subject to at least some drought. Many live in extremely dry environments, even being found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Unlike many other succulents, the stem is the only part of most cacti where this vital process takes place. Most species of cacti have lost true leaves, retaining only spines, which are highly modified leaves. As well as defending against herbivores, spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus and providing some shade. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north-except for Rhipsalis baccifera, which also grows in Africa and Sri Lanka.

Man I remember playing this twenty years ago when Half-Life was the shit. That sheriff character in this mod was the greatest. I don't think I ever beat this mod unfortunately.
A bit late to the party, but at 2:13 the car gets struck by lightning. For some reason the camera has a tendency to linger too far behind the intended frame of view for that cutscene so that's why it looked like the car just exploded. The lightning was just barely out of frame.
Fun Fact: In Sven Co-op there is a map like this but slightly updated. No casual zombies just zombies with headcrabs If you commit suicide in Sven Co-op, three people come up to you, and one says: “Well boys, he committed suicide” Then, you wake up in a room with just a bed, nothing else.
Oh man, this was THE first Half-Life mod I played back when I was 13 on my shitty integrated graphics laptop. It was and continues to be so campy and over the top at times, but still maintaining an atmosphere of dread all throughout. To anyone who wants to play this, there's an HD model pack somewhere on ModDB that updates the weaponry a bit, plus an additional model tweak that makes the zombies fast (though personally the slow zombies fit better). Even if it's dated in a lot of aspects, it's a must play for any Half-Life 1 fan!
played through it on Sven coop and gotta tell you its hella fun in multiple people +the weapons and headcrabs have different texture for some reason, like completely different.
"Shooting the driver makes the whole helicopter explode" I think this is because Steven Seagal movies were pretty popular back then and his fights with helicopters usually involve him making it explode mid air with a hand gun.
