THANK YOU REGGIE SO MUCH FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION! Now I'm confident I understand what evolving my style actually means. As for myself, now im experimenting with more flowy clothes, more oversized sillhoutte inspired by japanese fashion (something similar to the right picture on the thumbnail) and well im trying to evolve by using the pieces that I have in different contexts (as you mentioned tucking in a shirt and leaving it out is totally different, realizing that was a total game changer for me). I also look for pieces that are similar to the ones I have right now but in different colours (usually black or white). Also adding accessories really elevated my personal style a lot.

I've always been interested in fashion. I was a teen during the 80's and lusted after Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons but couldn't afford more that small things like a shirt here and there. I actually studied tailoring and made most of my clothes - I planned to be a designer, but I lacked the ambition/drive.
I wore a lot of Prada from the late 90's into the late 00's, and from then on it was full on YYPH for 10 years or so. I now buy mostly Jil Sander. I prefer simple and minimalistic pieces, whether they are classics or quirkier pieces. (Some of YYs pieces are complex, but they give the illusion of simplicity).
I started early, which means I also made my worst style mistakes early. My style has been fairly consistent over the past 20 or 30 years. Mostly black, often all black, with some navy, white and cream, and the occasional baby blue or bright red.
I can dress from super casual to black tie and still keep my style because I've been "collecting" for many years.
I'm itching to start making some clothes again. I bought some Loro Piana dark navy cashmere for a coat, but I can't seem to find the time to get started. Maybe during Thanksgiving or Christmas. 😵‍💫
I used to go to Tokyo twice a year to shop until 2020. I miss it.
I've always been free to dress as I please at work, no dress codes to speak of.

Never too late! You probably have lots of experience and perspective outside of fashion that can inform your exploration. If style is related to saying who you are, you probably know more about that than you did in the past.

I’ve always been interested in workwear/americana aesthetic and my style revolves around that, but it’s been hard because I work in an office that’s a very professional environment where I don’t think certain cuts I wear are appropriate. It has really put a wrench in my progression because I had to mix some pieces in my wardrobe that I don’t wear outside of work and some pieces I would wear before I started this job, but am now tired of them because I only wear them at work now.

Loving where I'm at at the moment. Made my first tailored modification at the tailors for the first time about 3 months ago and never looked back. Been taking online tutorials on sewing to eventually be self sufficient in creative endeavours. I think in the past month I've never worn the same outfit twice just through sheer combinations and configurations possible, I tend to gravitate to pieces with customisability (buttons, toggles, ties etc.) so that is a big plus with what I can do to a look.
Also for those with trouble working in especially corporate settings, I tend to use pieces that are understated but with flair, or pieces with removable attachments i.e. yohji skirts. I still stick out like a sore thumb sometimes but I keep boring extra clothes in my office cabinet just in case.

☺️ Very helpful video! My favorite accessories are a vintage Takeo Kikuchi messenger bag, some Y3 sneakers, my white leather studded commes des garçons wallet, and some slightly oversized hooded sweaters and bomber jackets from Y3. I have a career in clinical lab science and I love Japanese Rock, jogging, and tending a stone garden. So I’m barely starting that final stage of style. I lean more towards the “healthy/ effortless” and “slightly Asian inspired” elements of athletic tech wear at the moment.

Im currently 28 and im leaning mostly on pieces that are made in Japan when buying clothes. I also take into consideration the climate we have here in the Philippines. Soooooo. As much as i want to go full on Yohji Yamamoto, i really cant cuz its friggin hot in here.

Man, I love hearing your perspective, since you've got such clear way of summing things up. I've definitely seen that diy spirit from my teen years pop back up, but you've really hit the nail on the head about consistency and the importance of actually styling your looks. It makes sense to figure out how to keep some novelty without constantly adding something new.
I'm pretty eclectic, but I've experimented a ton, so while I know exactly what I like, I've only more recently hit on the amount of layering that needs to happen so I feel like me. My clothes haven't changed, but it made sense of the kinds options I have, and kept things from feeling stale.

Obsessed with denim and Americana. I've noticed so many brands like Studio D'Artisan, Visvim, and Naked & Famous have found so many ways to toy with denim fabric. One day I'll manufacture my own for sureee

Love your channel Reggie! Learned a lot about Japanese fashion from you and I am hoping to visit Tokyo someday. I have a lot of respect for Asian fashion as I have been binging on a lot of street fashion videos from all over the world and especially in Japan and South Korea as everybody looks so presentable as if their whole country has a dress code. I do get a lot of inspiration from their styles.

Old dude here, Evolved thru, Punky, Skater, clubber..overs sized, always wore outdoors gear as based in Scotland..Still basically the same style but now I more pricey and Japanese,,, .Now at the stage of, as Reggie says, getting some pieces done..I got some really nice vintage French moleskin and got my tailor (It sounds fancy, but most cities have folk who can do this) to make a pair or OG107 fatigues.. Pleased with them..Now looking for a light weight Sachiko/Kendo Gi fabric to make some kind of baggy garmicci style climbing pants..

I’m 24 going on 25, but I feel like I’m still going to/want to explore and trial with styles more. But something stopping me from buying new clothes is fast fashion and sustainable fashion. I would describe the styles I like as: Americana, Gorp, and sportswear and I’m trying to make all of that more sophisticated. An elevated take if you will.

Style progression now that I'm in my late 20s and can afford a lot of clothing I wasn't able to in my college years and early 20s... Has been both a creative and financial process for sure.
I work in tech so I'm more fortunate with my wardrobe, and compared to others here it's actually in some ways made it harder to narrow the scope of my wardrobe.
I'm experimenting more now with oversized and flowy/drapey fits especially after my recent trip to Japan.
Techwear/gorpcore, avant-garde/experimental designers, and daily modern office (think J Crew/Club Monaco) fits, and some tech minimalism (outlier, etc) are what I'm personally targeting...

How can these Ideas help if you feel like you are at full growth, but then your life changes? Is moving backwards in progression possible when trying to adapt? Could that have a positive side? More than once I felt like my wardrobe was finely tuned and working hard for me, but then something changed. An example would be a job change when I went from a fairly formal desk job to a physically active and sometimes dirty (but still gotta look sharp) job. My carefully curated and treasured collection of pencil skirts became irrelevant immediately, and I struggled to figure out what kind of durable washable pants would be both functional and feel like me. I figured it out and I love where I'm at now, but there were some very silly purchases along the way.

Personally, I have two, maybe you could say two and a half, styles that have been consistent, even in terms of color, since 1990.
Now, hold on a sec. That doesn't mean I'm still wearing Pony, Jordache, etc. It just means that I have a certain way of dressing that allows me to incorporate new pieces as clothing cuts, fits, etc. change, but stay consistent in terms of MY colors and MY personal style. It also doesn't lock me into any specific brand, because brands come and go, but MY style stays consistent (NOT the same, but consistent).
Honestly, anyone who knew me back then would see me now and say, "Yup. That's him", while also being able to say, "Wow! You look great!"

I have been following a LOT of fashion influencers and street style stars for a decade. What I have noticed is that when a person styles an outfit merely to follow trends (or sponsorship) without her own principle applied, the whole presentation feels surface level, no conviction. Also, how healthy or together a person is physically, mentally or in her personal life; the confidence and assuredness come thru regardless her personal style. It could be revealed in skin condition or hair texture. It is interesting to see camera not only capture fashion but also the bearer’s inner stuff (not 100% but often more than a glance).
