Ha ha... even though I included a lot of info in this video, I forgot to bring up the topic of whether you need to polish after any claying process. Thus I need to make a new video. :)

I'm happy with how this video turned out but after shooting it, I forgot to talk about one common topic related to claying. That topic would be,
*If I clay my car, do I have to polish the paint afterwards?*
The above is a GREAT question and there are different opinions on the correct answer but here's my take, based upon experience. When I detail cars and when I teach others to detail cars, if the car is going to be clayed, it's only because at least ONE machine polishing process is factored into the detail job.
The problem with claying paint is there is always the risk of *marring* the paint from the clay being rubbed over the paint finish. I've seen this happen for cars I've detailed. It's possible with a fine grade or ultra fine grade clay, used with the proper amount of clay lube, and if the car in question has hard paint, that you can get away with claying the paint and not marring it in the process. But to be professional and to be pro-active, I don't take chances and anytime I'm going to use detailing clay or a clay substitute, I've already factored in at least one machine paint correction step that will remove any marring - if it in fact happened.
But, I didn't think of the above until the next day, so that topic isn't in the video. Next time. :_

@@mikephillipsrealworlddetailing Mike, I am undeserving of such a "detailed" response but I am grateful for it. Thank you for sharing your depth of knowledge with us.

@@mikephillipsrealworlddetailing I am new to detailing and wonder if for instance I have to clay two or three times a year would I be able to polish that much without over the long term taking off too much clear coat. I keep my cars for 10 years or longer.

@@dogtrainerstuart - Great question. I would say you're completely good to go. In the big picture, if you're claying carefully, any marring you induce will be shallow and easily removed without taking much measurable clearcoat paint off the surface. It would be the least of my worries.
And wouldn't it be great if car manufacturers would put MORE clearcoat on their vehicles instead of *just enough*

Great video. Which do you prefer a clay bar or clay towel?

    • @mikephillipsrealworlddetailing

Great question and thank you for asking. My personal preference is for a clay towel, for 4 reasons.
1: If I drop the clay towel, I can wash it and reuse it. This cannot be done safely with actual detailing clay.
2: Clay towels last longer that clay bars. So, they are a better bang-for-your-buck compared to detailing clay.
3: I practice and teach doing mechanical decontamination during the wash process, this is part of what I teach called Extreme Prep Wash. While "yes" you can use a clay bar during the wash process, it's more efficient to use a clay towel.
4: There's no need to knead a clay towel. Not that it's a big deal, but kneading clay as you work around a car takes time. With a clay towel, there's no need to knead. Also, there are two types of clay, (besides the grade of clay), there's elastic clay and there's chunky clay. Elastic clay is much easier to knead than chunky clay, so of course, I prefer an elastic clay over chunky clay. The problem is, unless you've used a particular brand, you don't know which type of clay it is until you remove it from the packaging and then knead it for the first time.
I truly believe based upon experience that an Ultra Fine Grade Clay is the *SAFEST* option for mechanically decontaminating a painted surface, and this is important if the paint you're claying is soft or super soft. The problem is, you normally don't find out if paint is soft, medium or hard until you do the TEST SPOT and none of us practice doing the Test Spot BEFORE we wash and then clay the paint. This is going down the Rabbit Hole deeper than most people care for or can wrap their brain around, but the first time you clay SOFT black paint as a part of the wash process only later to find you instilled scratches through the paint - it's kind of too late.
Of course, the upside if this happens is soft paint corrects easy. And if you've already factored in at least one machine polishing step after claying - then it's a non-issue.
Maybe I'm the only person that pays attention to this small detail? LOL

    Take note's
    1. Make pancake
    2. Squeeze and make hulk sound
    3. Make hulk face while squeezing
    4. Clinch butt so you don't have an accident
Got it. That was my main issue. 😂

Hello sir, I have a new batch of polishing machines recently. Would you be interested in helping me test them?
