      im from a midle class myself but i take the non Ac or reserved sleeper class when alone just for the experience and with family. Unreserved only for under 3 hours journey when im alone and only if its not crowded.
      For overnight or long distance with family always the AC ! 3rd tier or 2nd tier AC. Depends on the people too. You should not get in if its crowded im sorry u had this experience.

      Why is safety not ensured on all train travels? Lack of police??

    • @rahulbisw
      @rahulbisw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In India you have in a single train there is around 10-12 coach. 1.Unreserved coach fare is lowest and seats are first come first occupied, and generally over crowded (Low fare and over population in India ) There is no space for police to roam or monitor.
      2 Reserved Ac coach sleeper 3 tier - are reserved and police are there to monitor on intervals.
      3.3rd AC , 2 AC 1 Ac generally have attendees.
      You can also tweet on @RailMinIndia with your train and coach number for any issues. like harassment, theft, medical help, police, bad food. The action is pretty immediate.
      Thanks & Regards

I was in a taxi alone and was delivered to the wrong hotel with 10 dudes all sitting around staring at me. Only a fool would travel solo in India. There’s nothing tough or brave about it. Wow!!! That sounds like a really horrible experience. But hats off to your level of patience Lindsay because travelling in an unreserved compartment in India is a challenge for even us Indians. I had to do it once and trust me , you DO feel like a freaking Tuna. And you did the right thing by going into the reserved compartment. I can totally understand that travelling in the non Ac compartments can be fun because you get to see the real India but these unreserved ones just takes away the entire fun factor. Because C'mon, one should be able to move at least to have fun. Lol.
    Anyway, I am glad that you survived that but i feel ashamed as an Indian that you had to go through something like that in my country.
    I wish you all the best for your future journeys though 😊

And I totally agree about unreserved- I had to try it once (I have to try everything once 😉) but I won't be doing it again. Sleeper non-AC is such a dream. I know AC is nicer but non-AC is way more fun and the whole reason I came to visit India was to see "real India" and be able to meet and spend time with its wonderful people. I feel so lucky I was able to spend so much time in India and it will always have a special place in my heart. I love it so much I'm actually coming back for 3 weeks this December! 😄

Don't visit low class areas. Don't go outside of hotel after 6:30pm. Or reach there till that time. Carry bottles water, you can get it from any store, have a indian women as friend there. Have information about IFS office, it's in Delhi. Don't eat street food. Eat only in the you're hotel. Or big restraunts. Dont go to crowded places.

She had 2 male friends with her? and the gropers had to grope her a couple of times before they actually did something and at first she was like 'thanks but no'?? thats not the type of reaction such blatant disrespect requires. Whats needed is they need to be kicked in the nuts to unlearn this behavior but she already said int he comments section, she would never kick someone in the nuts not even in a situation like that. Oh how mature! Yeah, that's how you tach these men , the punishment for doing this is not severe, so its a good idea to try it again with other women, with you for example.

    On every social media, even Embassy suggest foreigners to what to do in India, but you intentionally travelled in General Compartment is more like prey intentionally walking towards danger.
    Anyways - always take AC compartment.
    We Indians themselves don't travel in general compartment being from Middle Class.

      Hey Justice, thanks so much! I'm happy to help! I saved up $12,000 for my trip - I had some savings already so it only took me a few months. If you're traveling on a tight budget, I recommend visiting places that are less expensive to travel to - South East Asia, India, Nepal. Staying in hostels and cheap guest houses and taking local transit instead of pricy tourist vans and buses will help with your budget as well. If you have any additional or specific questions after you watch my series, please let me know! I'm here to help :) Also, if you want you can check my blog for some more specifics. I just started it so there isn't too much info but it could be an okay start. It's lindsaymc.com - Thanks and happy travels!

      The exact same thing happens in clubs in the US. Tight spaces, people trying to squeeze past each other and sure enough someone will grab you. Seen huge fights in clubs. Same thing in Italy where women complain being pinched or slapped on their butts. In France, you can get mugged or pickpocketed in the metro. So why bother getting into train compartments with a zillion people and then complain that people are grabbing you especially then you have been warned before.

    Brought back some memories from the distant past. I've only journeyed to Lukla once with two of my buddies. What we did was we took a flight from Kathmandu to Kangel Danda and then hiked all the way to Namche, which takes about two days if you hike continously during the day. On our way to Namche though, we ran across a number of Maoist cadres and leaders carrying homemade rifles and bazookas. We did feel some unease in the begining, but it was all good and none of them harassed us. So we safely reached Namche, took rest for a day and then continued our hike again. It took a day and a half to reach Lukla from Namche, and I must say, it was definitely worth all the effort because we got to enjoy some great sceneries along the way. Well, after arriving in Lukla, it pretty much kept raining like forever. All flights had to be cancelled because of the heavy rain and so we just stayed in our rooms - eating, drinking and jamming for 3 days until we somehow managed to hustle a ticket back home.lolAnyways, always enjoy your videos. Very Interesting and informative.

      Whoa, Tenzin! Talk about an adventure! Love the idea of flying to Kangel Danda and then hiking to Namche. So funny that you guys got stuck in Lukla - I did too after the hike! A storm came in and we were socked in for days. I ended up having to hike out and take a van. It was crazy! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your story :)

    In about 6 months I plan to travel solo all over Asia for 8-10 months, and I plan on travelling as light as possible.
    My only concern about this is that I want to trek in both China and Nepal, where I'll need both warmer clothes and a few extra things(sleeping bag etc.)

    Hi Lindsay, You said you were in India for 2.5 months, may I know what was your itinerary, if there are places you didn't like, if there were places you wanted to visit but couldn't? I was planning a trip myself and I am bit confused on where to go and how long to stay and so on.

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Abdalla, I started in Kolkata, went down through Puri (I didn't love Puri, I would skip it next time) Chennai, Kerala, Mysuru (Mysore) Goa, Hampi, Mumbai, New Delhi, Rishikesh, McLeod Ganj and Agra. I LOVED Kerala, Goa, Hampi, Rishikesh and McLeod Ganj. I traveled by bus or train the entire time. I feel like 2 1/2 months was just enough. I didn't see everything I wanted to see but I started feeling like I was ready for something new after that amount of time. I'm going back to India this winter to explore the Rajasthan area and Pune. Have fun planning and happy travels!

    I hate to say this but this happens a lot with men here in NYC, and it happens a lot on public transportation (buses and subway trains). And since the age of 16, I've been harassed and flirted with by Indian men who are new to this country (when they tried to get with me in a conversation I found out) and they do not back off even if you tell them no. I agree with a lot of people's comments here that you were lucky to have men with you who you knew. I'm not saying all Indian men are like this and I'm all for tolerance and co existence but they need to learn to respect a woman's space and to listen and understand that no means no; no matter where they live.

    Did you book Lukla flight way ahead of time? and also accommodations along the trek? Do most trek without guides on this trek? Sorry for so many questions but I want to figure out the cheapest way to do this trek. Looking forward to your next videos! :-)

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, I love lots of questions, Rafal! We booked our flight only a few days in advance, there are plenty of accommodations along the trek, you just walk up to them and ask if they have vacancy - it's only a few dollars a night but the accommodations are very basic (as its shown in the video.) I recommend not booking any accommodation in advance because you don't want to be tied to a schedule in case you are delayed or take longer than you anticipate. Lots of people trek without guides and porters. It's less expensive (obviously because you're not paying for a guide and porter plus their meals and accommodations) but also, for me- it's way more fun to figure things out on your own. Buy a good book and a map and you're golden. Signage can be spotty on the trek but it's totally doable - I would recommend trekking with a friend or travel buddy in case someone gets hurt however you'll meet people in the tea houses that you can trek with if you decide to go at it solo. Happy travels!!!

    • @rafalglaz2518
      @rafalglaz2518 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for clearing that up for me Lindsay ! Having the freedom to trek at my own speed was exactly what I was hoping for. And not having to spend a fortune on guides is obviously another one. Staying in basic accommodations just makes the adventure so much more memorable and fun. Yeah, I'll find someone to do this trek with me. Worst case scenario, like you said, I can bug someone on the trail. Thank you so much!

    I travelled once in General Compartment and after that I told myself I would travel 300 K.m by foot rather than going General. Most people in general Compartment are migrants from poorer states who are away from their wives for months and top of that it has 3-4 times more people than there are seats so no.1 tip while traveling Indian Railways is never go General.

    one thing to take from this is the dangers of a frenzied mob ... this is a real thing in many underdeveloped countries and Linsday and her friends dont actually realise how close they came to confronting one. What happens is one or two locals start to beef with you for absolutely no reason. Doesnt matter if they are in the wrong you need to deescalate and walk away from the situation ASAP. In this example are the boys groping Linsay, if they acted badly in any way like the white guys pushed them off hard or even punched them YOU WOULD IMMEDIATELY BE ATTACKED BY A MOB, this is because the locals defend themselves and you are a foreigner. In a situation like that THINGS COULD HAVE GOTTEN REALLY BAD.

    Even Indian Middle class does not travel in unreserved compartmen like that. That’s the worst choice. Travel in AC compartment which costs just 20-40$ and safe and comfortable. Travel to Kerala , Tamilnadu, Karnataka , Hyderabad and you will change your perception on India. Always travel in reserved AC train compartment only.

    Dear Lindsay, sorry to hear what happened to you. Even though you kept the event down and simply moved yourselves out of it, which I can understand you being in a foreign country. However, I want to let you know, women harrassment is an illness and Govt of India is serious about tackling the issue. You can dial 182 for instantly reporting them to RPF.
    While I acknowledge the challenges, but I would request you to report these issues without fail for Govt to act and give these loosers the correct medicine they deserve. Non reporting also make them bold which is another thing to worry. So, it is a request that while traveling in india, keep the contact numbers of police/ law agencies stored in your mobile. Even you can tweet @railminindia for help during travelling, they are quite helpful.

    how did you manage to book train tickets? because I've heard that you need to book reserved train tickets at least 90 days in advance.. is this true because I mean: how could that even be possible?
    oh and another question: how did you work out your 'skin treating routine'? And did you have any problems with wearing eye contact lenses like with hygiene ect..?
    Thanks so much for answering! Loving your videos so much! They're truly inspiring :D

    • @lindsaymccormick9607
      @lindsaymccormick9607 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man. These are all very good questions. So for the trains and reserved tickets, you don't need to book that far in advance (I would sometimes book just a day or a few days before) but if you are NOT going to book far in advance you need to be very flexible. Sometimes the trains were sold out for weeks so you need to be okay with taking a bus to a neighboring town and trying to catch a train from there or just taking a bus the whole way instead. The trains were AMAZING but such a pain in the ass to book and figure out. Sometimes they have a small number of reserved tickets set aside for tourists that you can pay for at a higher price (it's still very cheap.) If you are in a major city, there may be a tourist train office INSIDE the station (do not buy the tickets from anyone selling them outside the station, there are a lot of scams) - they can sometimes help you book a ticket at last minutes notice but it's always luck of the draw. I would sometimes have to go back to the train station a few times a day for a few days to get a ticket out of town. But it's all part of the experience right? ;) There are also sleeper buses and cheap flights all over India so look those up to have an option in your back pocket if you get stuck. Ask your hostel or guest house about booking buses and you can find flights online. To answer you question about skin care - I would just wash my face with what ever small containers of local face wash I could buy where ever I was. I wore sunscreen every day and washed my face every night and didn't wear much make up. Sometimes I was in places without running water so I would just use the local bucket water or bottled water if I needed to... It wasn't the cleanest but it worked! My first time in India, I was still wearing contact lenses (I've since gotten Lasik) and it was a HUGE pain. I made it work somehow but it was very dirty and annoying. I would rinse off my fingers with water before I had to take my contacts out. I had stocked up on small bottles of contact solution before I left Thailand so I had enough but I don't remember if I saw much for sale over in India. You probably want to be sure you have enough to get you through your time over there. Hope this helps! Happy Travels!

    Even we Indians face this trouble so we never travel in those cheap class !! there are many other good trains and classes, why you (being a foreigner) travel on these !!

      Thanks for watching Soumay! I always like to try everything once and then learn from experience. I'm glad I tried it but I won't be doing it again :)

      People may whine at this statement, but that's the truth. You can't change people's attitude. Stay safe. Always listen to advice.And don't lose ur life trying to save a few bucks ..
