Nah Trey, you gotta tap in with Cash Cobain, he been lacing NY rappers with some of the best beats in the last 4 years, and been in with Lucki and other rappers for even longer, as a producer. Him as a rapper, he been doing that for a min but he’s been going up even more in his rapping lane and getting better. Along with his key sound in terms of sample flipping over hard drums and “cash chords” (as he call em), plus his flow going with the smooth vibes of the beat, he gon carry NY in terms of sound for the next couple of years 💯

Personally, the picks that make sense to me are: BigXThaPlug, That Mexican OT, 4batz, and Skilla Baby. Maiya the Don I can understand too, but she only just dropped her debut tape last October. Cash Cobain I can understand more so for his production buzz ("And this beat from Cash, not from TH-cam"), but I don't know him for his own music, tbh.
I'm going to assume that XXL did what they usually do with this cover in interviewing at least 50 potential "freshman", and probably shooting the cover at the beginning of the year. Last part the most important part because you have to keep in mind some of these viral moments from the past couple of months happened after they already wrapped up the shoot I'm sure. So stuff like ian's Lyrical Lemonade video, or the 4 Shooters Only performance, even his Valedictorian debut all occurred only in the past three, four months. He'd probably be highly considered for next years' freshman list, but he might already surpass it by then.
Honestly surprised Anycia didn't make it, and would have been a MUCH BETTER inclusionn than some of the others, whether as another female rapper to include, or for that Atlanta representation. Her 4 Shooters Only performance was about ten months ago, "Splash Brothers" with KARRAHBOO was out about eight months ago, it might've been seen as too "early" but I think there was enough buzz there to see the potential. Like, I think back to when the chief editor(?) discussed BlocBoy JB making his freshman cover on the Breakfast Club, and it was in part due to the Drake feature, but also the editor mentioned he had the personality to get along with people, where you'd want to help him. I think it's similar to Maiya the Don, but also because XXL was likely already in talks with Latto for that female cypher she put together and Maiya was included.
There's always a handful of freshman that fall off hard post-cover, I wouldn't be surprised if that included Lay Bankz, Hunxho, BossMan Dlow, Rich Amiri, and (as much as I hate to say it) ScarLip.
