Father, if you would, please pray for the repose of the soul of my newly-departed father, George, non-Orthodox but Christian (Lutheran); married to my mom in the Orthodox Church; departed this life on his birthday last month (May 19th--Long Suffering Job, Old Calendar); and he did suffer greatly but kept his faith in Christ. Spiritual fathers know that some sins and human failures are hard to overcome. Good spiritual fathers are realistic and help instead of judge.

Repentance is not a destination that you move towards for a little while, reach it, and then sit down and do nothing. Repentance is a way of life, a spiritual state. God allows people to die only when they're ready, or when they've reached a point in their life where they'll only go spiritually downhill from then on. The only way to know for certain that you've "made it" spiritually is when you've already died the bodily death and gone to the Bosom of Abraham. If you're still alive (and I assume everyone reading this is!) then you've got work to do.

As a wandering Christian now that I've left my Protestant ways, then discovered Catholicism and moved onto the Theology of the Orthodox Church, I've known now for over a year that in my heart I am an Orthodox Christian. I've supplemented in the ways I've can since, but the hardest part about it all is being from the Rural Midwest of the USA, my nearest Orthodox Church is 1.5 hours away, which complicates things greatly. But I'm striving and trying as best I can, I just wonder what the Lord thinks of the spot I am in at this moment and if I am letting him down, although I'm mounting my situation so that I may make it to that Church as much as humanly possible. You cannot really think that if you are doing things against God without care that you will be saved in the end. Obedience to Him is essential to the race we are running as St. Paul coined it. Without that you are no different than an atheist. Even the demons believe but they do not do the will of God. Do you wish to be like them? Christ enabled us to be saved and now we must meet Him half way. Synergy. We are saved at True Faith and baptism (in the Church), we are being saved, and we hope to be saved in the end. We are saved not from hell but saved to be with in communion with Him for eternity. If you truly love someone you listen to them. If you do not love someone then aren't you using them when you don't listen to them but take what they offer you? Yes. We must take the offer of salvation and love God and express that love and listen to Him. That is why Christ God gave us the Holy Mysteries, to be one with Him not only in thought and mind but bodily too. It is an ultimate relationship. Agape. Faith working through love!
The tax collector had a multitude of sins forgiven because God is merciful. The Pharisee did not ask for mercy. Gods mercy was soon provided for the forgiveness of the tax collectors sins because Jesus would shed his blood for the remission of sins. The church is forever then justified by Jesus’ blood. Faith in his blood justifies the church. That same blood was for the remission of the tax collectors sins. Gods mercy was granted in the blood of Christ.

Human beings have always wanted and tried to save themselves from their own sins and earn their own eternal salvation. It is part of our sinful nature to do so. But there is no amount of human good works that could ever satisfy the demands of perfect holiness before YHWH because we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But Jesus, The Christ, was SINLESS and He satisfied all the demands of perfect righteousness. So He shed His own blood and died for our sins in order to redeem us. Then He rose from the dead and victoriously offered that glorious gift of eternal life to anyone and everyone who believes in Him and His promise to give us this gift. Hallelujah, What a Savior!! Repentence just is the desire to be healed. The desire to be healed by God requires both Faith and a recognition of sin. We repent when we, like the leper, see that He is our only solution, and that in truth we have no other way we can turn that isn't suicide.

@@amj76425 , Yes, those verses, in part, do indeed, encapsulate, in part, the Gospel. If, and I say if, you are trying to say that Father Spyridon was either contradicting those verses or teaching another Gospel then I'm going to have to disagree with that assessment. We must avoid the temptation to cherry pick verses and thus take them out of the larger context of both the written Scriptures, and what the Church had always taught concerning Salvation. Of course, our Salvation is always in Christ Jesus. In fact, He is our Salvation. That said we must cooperate with the Holy Spirit. That includes repentance, and faith. Both must be genuine, and ongoing. There is no such thing as a "Decision for Christ", and that's it. Neither has the Church ever taught-once saved, always saved". I'm not Eastern Orthodox, I'm Anglo-Catholic, but I must agree with Father Spyridon that we must repent. And that is a daily process, and that goes with believing the Gospel.
I think most of us aren't even aware of the sins were commit. I have trouble with lustful thoughts and other things but I've been trying to change. I have had success with some stuff but its more difficult when it comes to needs of the body especially when it comes to lustful thoughts. I hope to one day get married to solve that issue but its difficult to find the right one.

How do you handle the scripture that states 'Ye are saved by grace alone through faith and not if your own doing, lest anyone shall boast'? If we are repenting daily, isn't this considered a work of sanctification? I rely on Christ alone to sanctify me daily, not my own strength and willpower. Give us this day our daily bread. Only until recently has the lust for women departed from me, that I've been fighting for years. No longer do I crave to see women naked. Christ has done this for me because I asked for purity. I went from daily and weekly masturbation to having the lust vanish entirely. I've stayed single for my entire life as a devotion to the Lord. My flesh still tries remind me of those old passions, but now it feels distant, but I know that the flesh is weak and I pray that I don't fall into that habitual sin ever again. Now I rely on Christ to fix my anger and outbursts. Lord willing, he will make me Christ-like.

How can I atone for my selfish and thoughtless treatment of my 95 yr old mother, who never hurt anyone, was always loving, her whole life, during the final 2 years of her life? Repentance is not a destination that you move towards for a little while, reach it, and then sit down and do nothing.
Repentance is a way of life, a spiritual state. God allows people to die only when they're ready, or when they've reached a point in their life where they'll only go spiritually downhill from then on.
The only way to know for certain that you've "made it" spiritually is when you've already died the bodily death and gone to the Bosom of Abraham. If you're still alive (and I assume everyone reading this is!) then you've got work to do.

As a wandering Christian now that I've left my Protestant ways, then discovered Catholicism and moved onto the Theology of the Orthodox Church, I've known now for over a year that in my heart I am an Orthodox Christian. I've supplemented in the ways I've can since, but the hardest part about it all is being from the Rural Midwest of the USA, my nearest Orthodox Church is 1.5 hours away, which complicates things greatly.
But I'm striving and trying as best I can, I just wonder what the Lord thinks of the spot I am in at this moment and if I am letting him down, although I'm mounting my situation so that I may make it to that Church as much as humanly possible.

We become partakers of the energies of God by way of humility, we open ourselves up to the energies. By the way, the word "energy" is something that Paul uses himself in several epistles, the greek word.
"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." Philippians 2
The greek word here for "works" from God is actually "ενέργεια", energy, or a variation. We are to work out our salvation by humbling ourselves and allowing the energies of God to enter us that we might "become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault"

We must always turn away from the things which are against God. You cannot really think that if you are doing things against God without care that you will be saved in the end. We are saved at True Faith and baptism (in the Church), we are being saved, and we hope to be saved in the end. We are saved not from hell but saved to be with in communion with Him for eternity.
If you truly love someone you listen to them. If you do not love someone then aren't you using them when you don't listen to them but take what they offer you? Yes. We must take the offer of salvation and love God and express that love and listen to Him. That is why Christ God gave us the Holy Mysteries, to be one with Him not only in thought and mind but bodily too. It is an ultimate relationship. Agape. Faith working through love!

The tax collector had a multitude of sins forgiven because God is merciful. The Pharisee did not ask for mercy. Gods mercy was soon provided for the forgiveness of the tax collectors sins because Jesus would shed his blood for the remission of sins. The church is forever then justified by Jesus’ blood. Faith in his blood justifies the church. That same blood was for the remission of the tax collectors sins. Gods mercy was granted in the blood of Christ.

Human beings have always wanted and tried to save themselves from their own sins and earn their own eternal salvation. It is part of our sinful nature to do so. But there is no amount of human good works that could ever satisfy the demands of perfect holiness before YHWH because we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But Jesus, The Christ, was SINLESS and He satisfied all the demands of perfect righteousness. So He shed His own blood and died for our sins in order to redeem us. Then He rose from the dead and victoriously offered that glorious gift of eternal life to anyone and everyone who believes in Him and His promise to give us this gift. Hallelujah, What a Savior!! AND NOW we are FREE in Christ - at LIBERTY to LOVE OTHERS!

Repentence just is the desire to be healed. The desire to be healed by God requires both Faith and a recognition of sin. We repent when we, like the leper, see that He is our only solution, and that in truth we have no other way we can turn that isn't suicide.

@@amj76425 , Yes, those verses, in part, do indeed, encapsulate, in part, the Gospel. If, and I say if, you are trying to say that Father Spyridon was either contradicting those verses or teaching another Gospel then I'm going to have to disagree with that assessment. We must avoid the temptation to cherry pick verses and thus take them out of the larger context of both the written Scriptures, and what the Church had always taught concerning Salvation. Of course, our Salvation is always in Christ Jesus. In fact, He is our Salvation. That said we must cooperate with the Holy Spirit. That includes repentance, and faith. Both must be genuine, and ongoing. There is no such thing as a "Decision for Christ", and that's it. Neither has the Church ever taught-once saved, always saved". I'm not Eastern Orthodox, I'm Anglo-Catholic, but I must agree with Father Spyridon that we must repent. And that is a daily process, and that goes with believing the Gospel.
I think most of us aren't even aware of the sins were commit. I have trouble with lustful thoughts and other things but I've been trying to change. I have had success with some stuff but its more difficult when it comes to needs of the body especially when it comes to lustful thoughts. I hope to one day get married to solve that issue but its difficult to find the right one.
Praying for you. Our society between a lot of secular music and images , internet , people we hang out with you would be surprised how much influence on a daily basis. Might want to visit a priest and do confession it might help you out.

By the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth who shows us our sin, if we will humble ourselves, and then we joyfully turn FROM sin, TO GOD.... and this goes on and on as we learn to Walk by the Spirit so we don't fulfill the lusts of the flesh....You are right that we daily need to come before God and seek that strength we need to OBEY......Always by His Mighty Power....THIS is how we are to live. How do you handle the scripture that states 'Ye are saved by grace alone through faith and not if your own doing, lest anyone shall boast'? If we are repenting daily, isn't this considered a work of sanctification?
I rely on Christ alone to sanctify me daily, not my own strength and willpower. Give us this day our daily bread.
Only until recently has the lust for women departed from me, that I've been fighting for years. No longer do I crave to see women naked. Christ has done this for me because I asked for purity. I went from daily and weekly masturbation to having the lust vanish entirely. I've stayed single for my entire life as a devotion to the Lord. My flesh still tries remind me of those old passions, but now it feels distant, but I know that the flesh is weak and I pray that I don't fall into that habitual sin ever again. Now I rely on Christ to fix my anger and outbursts. Lord willing, he will make me Christ-like.

How can I atone for my selfish and thoughtless treatment of my 95 yr old mother, who never hurt anyone, was always loving, her whole life, during the final 2 years of her life? All the orthodox prayers cry for mercy, but I don't want or deserve mercy, I want my mother to know how sorry I am and that she be lifted up to be with God in heaven for eternity.
