I'm totally new to crochet, and wool care for that matter (I'm born and raised in Texas and there isn't much need for it here lol), BUT, I used to be a dog groomer and have experience in taking care of *some* animal hair lol. I wonder if it wouldn't just be more convenient to mix a little human shampoo and conditioner into your basin there and see how that turns out? Now that I'm not in the dog grooming business anymore, i bathe my own dog with the normal shampoo and conditioner i use for myself. If she's extremely dirty or got motor oil on her or something, i use dawn dish soap, but follow it up with a heavy conditioner cause dawn will dry out skin and hair.
Anyway, it's just a crazy thought. I might do an experiment myself since I've got some leftover merino after making my mom a scarf for Christmas.

I wouldn’t use any essential oil. Detergent doesn’t have to smell like anything.
