I have had 2 Mason Pearson boar bristle, popular brushes. I got the first one as a girl and did not give it any special care. It lasted 30 years before the bristles started to break off enough to Affect its performance. The second one is in it’s 21st year of service. It is just starting to lose a bristle here and there. I have treated it very carefully and expect to get another 10 years out of it. By the way I still have the old brush which is going on 50 years now and I keep it in my suitcase for travel. The rubber base is still good and it still has enough bristles to be more comfortable and effective to use than my mini travel brush.

For cleaning the brush, could I use a drop of dawn soap mixed with warm water instead of shampoo? Most shampoos have oils in them that coat the hair. Whereas dawn soap removes all oils including the oils from your hair that the brush soaked up.

It's probably fine but I'd be a little nervous that dawn is too drying on the base

@@PositivelyMommy I see, what if I use only 1 drop in a sink filled with warm water? That way the water would bring the ph level down of the soap (the soap reaches a 9 on the ph scale VERY alkaline!) As for the water it’s a solid 7 on the ph scale.
