    Virtua Racing or V.R. for short, is a Formula One racing arcade game, developed by Sega AM2 and released in October 1992. Virtua Racing was initially a proof-of-concept application for exercising a new 3D-graphics platform under development, the "Model 1". The results were so encouraging, that Virtua Racing was fully developed into a standalone arcade title. Though its use of 3D polygonal graphics was predated by arcade rivals Namco (Winning Run in 1988) and Atari (Hard Drivin' in 1989), Virtua Racing had vastly improved visuals in terms of polygon count, frame rate, and overall scene complexity, which all contributed to a greater sense of immersion. Virtua Racing is regarded as one of the most influential video games of all time, for laying the foundations for subsequent 3D racing games and for popularizing 3D polygonal graphics among a wider audience.
    The original arcade game has three levels, designated into difficulties. Beginner is "Big Forest", intermediate is "Bay Bridge" and expert is "Acropolis". Each level has its own special feature, for example the amusement park in "Big Forest", or the "Bay Bridge" itself, or the tight hairpin of "Acropolis".
    VR introduced the "V.R. View System" by allowing the player to choose one of four views to play the game. This feature was then used in most other Sega arcade racing games (and is mentioned as a feature in the attract mode of games such as Daytona USA). It was later ported to home consoles, starting with the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994.

    i remember the Sega Genesis cartridge costed $99.99 when it came out.
    So every time you buy the Genesis cartridge for $5.00 at a yard sale or on ebay, somewhere a former Sega executive gets a hemmorhoid.

      Dave Mire for it's time, the SVP (Sega Virtua Processor) made this into a notoriously expensive cart which wasn't even an RPG game. Unfortunately, that SVP chip was too expensive to produce meaning that the games Sega planned on porting to the Genesis like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter were scrapped and sent to other platforms like the Saturn and 32X

    I've owned a few of the home versions of VR over the years. The only one I kept was VR Deluxe for the Sega 32X. It's as close to the arcade as you can get while still being faithful to the original in terms of graphics and handling.

    I'm thinking about reworking My requirements. Since this one didn't have 6 or more I decided to give it a shot & see how it goes. I'm considering dropping My required 6 ports to 4. This way I can get more requests. Hopefully the quality of videos will not suffer because of it. Lemmie know what You guys think. :)

I tried Ridge Racer a few months later but that couldn't hold a candle to VR. BTW I love the sound of the VR cars. I want all electric cars to sound the same. Awesome!

    The SVP in the G/MD cartridge had a lot of potential. The console can actually do 3D but people understand hoe to program for the older consoles so much better nowadays. That's why I love Homebrew so much. There's a Homebrew Starfox on the Genesis that someone mace, have you ever seen it? Makes me think of what the Mega Drive was truly capable of.

    • @TheLoveMario
      @TheLoveMario 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +RandomIP Not only that, but the same guy also made a homebrew Wolf3D on the genesis, with ALL THE VOICES AND FULL TEXTUREMAPPING, and NO CHIPS. that guy is a god

    • @760creations
      @760creations 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MarioKart7z The big deal maker about the MD is the processor. It's a powerful piece of hardware and can do amazing things even though the GPU is not as powerful. They still have a great color palatte, and some amazing things have been done. Have tou ever seen Batman and Robin on Genesis? One of THE prime examples of the graphics capabilities of the Genesis. Same with Red Zone, it shows off some amazing stuff WITHOUT the use of any extra chips whatsoever. I think it's safe to say that SEGA could have made a potential star fox competitor, but alas, it was not meant to be. At least we have real in game footage of Star Fox runninf on the Genesis hardware!!

    • @TheLoveMario
      @TheLoveMario 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RandomIP Only problem: Red Zone is hard as sh*t

    • @user-kd1ho7gm7i
      @user-kd1ho7gm7i 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RandomIP I would say the colour palette is the very weak point on the Mega Drive / Genesis. Not so much the palette itself, but the on-screen simultaneous colour restriction(64k video ram). If only the Sega CD would have corrected that...why Sega did not focus on that when they designed the Sega CD is a mistery to me. One may think that it was that way, in order to maintain retro compatibility, but if so, why was the 32x able to improve in that area?

    Cracking game. I remember playing the Mega Drive version in 1994, I was still at school at the time and couldn't afford it. Never played the Arcade version, although I did see a big sit down machine at an arcade in London sometime in late 1994, I never played it. Apart from the MD port, I've only played the other versions via emulation. At the time of it's release it was amazing though.

    I'd have to say, I'm impressed with how good the Genesis version was. I expected it to have used sprites in a pseudo-3D background, and/or running like a slideshow. Hats off to the developers who ported it! As for the 32x version, there wasn't enough improvements for it to have been a good purchase. Still decent if you never bought the Genesis version, but not too outstanding.

    I was referring to how the game runs which is silky smooth. Even MAME says that the emulation is not perfect. There are some very minor graphical glitches and TBH I didn't hear anything wrong with the sound. Even if the sound isn't perfect it is more than close enough. Most of us who actually played VR in the arcade couldn't hear the sounds very well over all the ambient noise anyway. Perhaps you have a better way to play besides having the arcade board?

    I had the Genesis, 32X, and Saturn versions of the game (actually I still have all three but haven't played any of them in many years), and IMO the 32X version was better than the Saturn version. I think many other people feel the same way. The Genesis version looked rough and some corners had to be cut, but considering the hardware limitations it was a very good port and played well.

    I have all console versions and like each for different reasons. The one thing the PS2 version is missing is what the arcade had, 60 frames per second.It if could do that then my God it would be so perfect. Has anyone used any PS2 emulators? Do they enhance PS2 games,such as boosting frame rates? Maybe that could make the PS2 version of Virtua Racing 60 frames per second? I guess i need to get around to trying PS2 emulators but I have a PS2 around so I've put off trying them. I really wish Sega would still make and bring racers like this home. It fucking sucks to see them a shell of what they once were. Atleast we have the games to remember the glory of what Sega was once. Noone could touch their racers.

    should have ran the MAME (arcade) version with an analog controller instead of a keyboard, it makes the game control seem unnatural. also the arcade had a 16:9 mode on the dipswitches. They also managed to get the mame version to run 8 machines in a network.

    The 32X port is still the definitive one to me -- the Saturn and PS2 versions have really screwy collisions, amongst other issues. Real shame too, the PS2 version is super-nice looking.
    The Genesis version is pretty nice, that SVP chip certainly does a decent job, even at such a low framerate it keeps a decent feeling of speed. It would be the definitive port if the 32X version didn't exist, and that's depressing.
    Is the PS2 version emulated here? Some things seem off [I have the JP version].

    As nice as the PS2 version looks, the sound design really bothers me, enough that I wouldn't want to play it. The fact there's no gear shifts, the clearly looped tire skidding sound, and the obvious changes in the engine sound pitch... they really get to me.

    I like the 32X version best. Never player the arcade version. The Saturn version is an insult (mainly because of gameplay, but it should have looked better too). The Mega Drive version is just cool because of it's novelty.

      Not sure. It had to come off of one of the Disk versions of the game. It came from the Saturn version if Memory serves me correct.

    3 generations and still never got an arcade perfect port of this game. The Saturn version should have been that port but Sega gave that project to Time Warner. Idiots. The Genesis version was pretty much a tech demo for the SVP chip that was never used again, the 32X version I think captured the essence of the arcade the best, and the PS2 version's tire screeching makes my ears bleed. The Saturn is still a good racing game with tons of extras but sucks at being the arcade. Damn it Sega!
