I hear you about why it seems strange that a bunch of teenagers fighting would replace an international sports event. It seems odd to me too, but when you think about it real hard it actually does make sense. UA is one of, if not the most, exclusive hero course schools in the world. So, they are guaranteed to have only the most inspiring, powerful, and prosperous students competing. Not only will it be fun to watch but it also lets viewers see who will be protecting them not only in Japan but also worldwide bc there are rare occasions where international hero cooperation is needed. I'm probably overthinking it a bit but the Sports Fest could also have a political function in the sense that it shows adversaries what they are going to contend with in the next three years. There's a reason AllMight is world renowned and no one has fk'd with Japan during his career. Imagine watching him during the Sports Fest after he had OFA in his third year knowing someone like that is representing Japan. The idea that local villains watch it too comes into play in season 3. Then again, you could just chock it up to people being weird wanting to watch kids fight. After all, in real life people watch things like child beauty pageants and 16 and Pregnant, so......... Also, its a good thing that you're not Googling anything right now and I'd highly suggest you stay as far away as possible. The manga just ended and S7 has huge plot moments going on right now so there are spoilers everywhere about every single thing.
I am glad someone mentioned the obvious relation with Gran Torinos name. It’s been driving me crazy lol
