Waste of time doing all that stuff because they’re going to spread anyways. The water birds will spread them because their larvae is very tiny and will get in the birds feathers. One good thing to come from it is, the redear sunfish will get huge eating them. Drum and bluecat eat them also. Lake Havasu pumps out world record class redear because of quagga mussels. Redear are the hardest fighting bream I’ve ever caught and they get over 6 lbs. I could only imagine how hard one that size could fight.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
Problem is that no one knows the true severity or long term implications of GM introduction.
When you don’t know all the facts, it’s typically best err on the side of caution and make informed decisions as data becomes available.
Yea, it hurts the fishing industry and that sucks. It hurts tourism, and that sucks.
But being mad about being inconvenienced as a fisherman? I don’t understand it… just seems like whining.
I like fishing… a lot. But it’s a privilege. If there’s a possibility that the GM can damage the infrastructure at Monticello Dam and compromise the water supply to the cities and farms of solano county, I’m totally fine jumping through a hoop or two if that’s how I can be part of the solution right now.
I’m bummed for the business owners - but these are the hurdles that happen sometimes when your business relies on nature, seasonality, etc. there are no guarantees.
Honestly, the best thing we all can do is actually go fishing MORE where we can 😂 pay your launch fees, buy an extra lure or two, and be respectful of the waterways you choose.
Hopefully, things will even out as more info becomes available soon.
      This too, shall pass.

@ biologist said zebra mussels and gobies would ruin the Great Lakes and boy did they get both of those wrong. It made the Great Lakes, great. Smallmouth are thriving now better than ever. They said weights that previously used to win tournaments won’t even place in the top 50 nowadays.

    • @jeffhutting7958

@@jamesbarron1202 exactly. There’s definitely some wait-and-see in effect here. Unfortunately, this approach isn’t compatible with modern “Instant gratification” mentality.
One thing these ‘inconveniences’ are doing is bringing attention to the issue, which is a great thing although comes at the cost of having a very vocal ‘guild of the disgruntled.’
Having said all of that, the ball is in the state agency’s court to collect and process data and then get all waterways on the same page.
Of course, they are in a no-win situation because no matter what the outcome is, people can’t help but take a swing at the ol’ government piñata whenever they have a chance. 🪅
As I said… damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

@@jamesbarron1202 it’s not about the bass, hell bass are invasive 😂. It’s about the ecosystem as a whole and water infrastructure. If you research Q/Z mussels cost billions of dollars in infrastructure repairs and upkeep. GM would destroy a natural lake like Clear Lake and will likely drastically change the Delta. Look at areas in S. America where they’ve been introduced, the lakes tule and vegetation is gone. They drastically change the nutrient cycle.

You said it, “different agencies different rules…”. They need to formulate 1 list of qualified decontamination sites and allow boats to utilize 1 tag for all northern CA bodies of water. If a boat launches in the delta, they have to get decontaminated again, obtain and tag, and then would be able to launch at any lake once again. Charge for the decontamination, then hire more lake staff to stay later than 4pm so boaters can obtain a new tag upon exiting the lake each time.

This reminds me very much of COVID and the arbitrary measures state and local gov created to 'stop the spread' (which is not possible w/an airborne virus that spreads via coughing/sneezing - where droplets measuring 5-to-50 microns hang/suspend in the air for seconds to minutes.) Mussels propagate via microscopic veligers during their larval stage. When they first spawn, they are usually less than 0.1 millimeters in size (mathematically 50 viligers can live in 1 drop of water.) In both cases, 'stopping the spread' is virtually impossible, yet in the case of mussels, virtually ALL of the state's efforts are placed here. They target Bass boats b/c it's easier to 'decontaminate' a bass boat (and tournament anglers are guaranteed to be compliant.) eg think about the line at Berryesa's decom site on a July the weekend IF they were to fully decontaminate all Wakeboard boats - INCLUDING the ballast systems that need thorough flushing w/140 degree water... a process that can take upwards of 60 minutes and requires completely filling then flushing to ensure the complete system is 'decontaminated.' (one of those big monster WB boats has multiple bladders that can hold upwards of 240+ gallons.) State and Local gov create many programs, costing millions/billions of dollars under the guise of "WE MUST DO SOMETHING" without ever asking the question of is our goal achievable/possible? Why not spend 100% of the effort/resources dealing with the inevitable?? ie instead of 'Stop The Spread' focus on local infestation eradication efforts - developing biocides that specifically target mussels or using coper sulfate, or using pathogens or diseases to target invasive mussels. (eg the bacterium "Wolbachia," which has been shown to sterilize certain mussel species in laboratory conditions.) Focus on dealing with, managing the problem. If it's as prolific as they say, until they FULLY inspect and decontaminate all ducks and geese (and wakeboard boats), it's going to spread.

Nick, your right on regarding the state not caring about fisherman. Most of our lakes are strictly water storage for the biggest water users in our state, agriculture. Ag. uses 80% of all California's water and do a little research you'll find out that Billionaire's own most of the crops in particular cash crops, pistachios, almonds and alfalfa. Feeding America, give me a break. It's all about money controlling and taking.

  • @DWPFishing

I dont see how they will prevent them from spreading. The fact that not all lakes are limiting launch and only for motorized vehicles makes no sense. These mussels aren't just gonna pick kayaks with motors to attach to, lol. Its like after 9/11 when they were confiscating nail clippers at airport gates but allowing pencils on board. Its a reactionnary reponse without real thought behind it. Its too late. Unless they prevent container ships from entering our waterways, more non-natives will be introduced in the system in the future. Its just the reality. They need to accept the fact that they are here and mitigate damage based on that premise. Who knows, maybe something good will come out of this like some fisheries in the east where smallmouth bass fishing has improved due to two invasive species. My 2 cents.

My biggest fear is it this mussel is bad as they say, and it gets into lakes and dramatically reduce the health and fish population or potentially make the lake sterile, and we all lose at that point. Other states may start to not allow any CA registration on their bodies of water . I really hope this isn't as bad as it's reported to be.

@@jasongundros1422 zebra mussels made the Great Lakes, great for smallmouth. Weights that used to win tournaments before zebras won’t even get you into a top 50 finish now. Redear sunfish (shell crackers) thrive in quagga mussel waters because they eat them. As do drum and bluecat.

They probably won’t, it’ll be more of an issue in the Delta and natural lakes or lakes that have less rise/fall.

For now business as usual with extra monitoring and further training for ramps monitors. I see the future being more mussel dogs put into service but they’re expensive and take time to train. I predict a fee increase to cover mussel dogs over decontamination which would be quicker and less expensive the decontamination stations.

If the Delta is the source of the contamination, sit it down. But like you said Nick, it’s probably too late. I love the Delta but if it’s going to destroy all the lakes, something has to be done!

I think the lakes need to honor each others band. If you decontaminate at berryessa and get the band you should be able to go to Melones and be able to fish. And visa versa. Having to go to Melones and be inspected wait 30 days. Fish there get a band, and then be able to go to berryessa. Your boat was clean and inspected. You didn’t launch anywhere else, the other lake should allow you to fish there. I love the delta enough I would make time to get decontaminated. But going from lake to lake is going to be a pain!!
