Chris, at 1:05 you nailed the reason for this class of bike, and why for most of us the bigger 700-900cc adv bikes are ok for touring but too big for offroad exploring. It is good to see the manufacturers finally get their mojo in this space.
As a 350 EXC owner and an 890 ADV owner I want this bike desperately. KTM needs to ramp up production of this bike over the 790 and 890 and make a Rally model with all the extra bits and upgraded suspension.
Too funny, my exact same situation and same bikes. Love my killer performance 790 adv R, but when alone in tuff off road adventure's, and I always seem to get there, this 390 could be my answer. What a sweet looking machine.
Looks like a good bike. I've had 2 KTM bikes and both had major failures. One with suspension and one with the engine. After sales service was shocking so I won't be buying another KTM anytime soon. Went back to Japanese.
Good choice, KTM's main focus is on performance, they don't seem to put a whole lot of thought into long term reliability, a good example of this is how quick the 790 adventurer came to market, now compare that to how long it took the T7 to come to market, Yamaha basically rode it around the world before they released it to the public.
KTM is as dumb as other manufacturers. They adhere their bikes to the A2 euro license idiocy. Max 48Hp, max 0.2KW/kg, minimum 175Kg weight. I guess the enduro versions will be min 175kg that is why this ended up +10Kg. We live in the most stupid era possible, in general.
I’ll be interested in the comparison of this and that tasty new 450GS. After what seems like forever we have quite a few new intreating small displacement bikes. Hallelujah 🙌
Finally, a KTM Adventure style bike that has a headlight / fairing that doesn't look like a giant flying insect! AND a more vertical profile to the windscreen.
With all the new bikes coming out there's still yet to be a replacement for the good old dr650, sure there's the 690, but that's literally twice the price, all these small displacement adventure bikes are heavier than the dr and they're way way down on torque.
Price is the potential stickler here. Versus the new DRZ, I’m struggling to see why I’d have it. The new Z is far lighter, more suspension travel, being a Suzuki far more reliable and with FI, tuning potential will now be huge. Add a big tank and it’ll still be lighter than the 390 by 25kg.
400-450cc ADV/dual-sport: the lines are starting to blur. Maybe the ADV will get capable enough to where they'll be doing things better than the dual sport, while not giving up road/gravel comfort and utility. With people like Pol Tarrés, we see the bike Tenere is nearly as capable as a dirtbike if you put in enough time and talent. I think the 450 twin class will push it even more in that direction.
ive held off a t7 because of being bigger, and the fact i want to fuck it up and fuck myself up on some right off road exploring. Was looking at the Kove 450 rally too, but this is looking like the one for me
At last, of all of the ‘reviews’ from the show by clueless self professed experts you came through with the specs we all interested in by someone with enough experience of the previous model too. Well done Chris.
Bought 890 ADV R and 690 enduro R in 2024. Looks like 390 will be added in 2025… First thoughts and experience so far: 890 adv R too heavy, harsh suspension but sublime on the roads, 690: very high seat, overly expensive and harsh suspension but nice for trail riding, 390 nice compromise but should be 20 kg lighter. Lets see once it’s out
High seat at 910mm? It is pretty much a low seat for what it is, laughably low tbh even for medium sized men. 950mm would be high seat. 930mm would be ideal.
@@vinny2409 Understandable but it is also the bike class that dictates seat height. I am 1.83 but inseam more like 1.78+ and find anything below 930mm low, in this class, given the seats are quite narrow. Also touring with high seat and low knee angles is so much easier. In difficult dirt parts it is always good to step off the bike anyway. Even the lowest seat cannot save you from a trench.
Chris, your preference between the BMW F450GS and this KTM 390Adv will dictate which one I will get. I'm hoping it's the BM though (I've had 3 GS's and 1 RT)
what was the source of the weight you mentioned in this video? Because 185kg for 400cc single cylinder bike sounds ridiculous tbh😅 just 25 kg lighter than 890 Adventure that makes double horsepower

Love the rally design. But i would prefer a transparent, stand alone tower with low placement of dash. Now both tank bridges and dash block view. Previous 390 Adventure was better at it i think.
As I understood when looking at another video they said that the engine is from 390 duke and to save money they used the same under belly exhaust if that make sense
@bananahammock3859 the 890 also use the same engine in the duke and the adventure, and exhaust it's different. T7 and mt07 same engine different exhaust
Nice to see this. Let's see how it stacks up vs the competition. At first glance, I think I would go for the new Suzuki instead but competition uplifts everything
Thanks. I actually prefer the Enduro R version. It has a higher exhaust, probably slightly lighter and less electronics, I can stick an Adventure Men Cave tower on it.
Was really looking forward to this new model, but if it's only about 20 kg lighter than my 790r, can't really see the attraction, but let's wait until official model is launched in the new year 👍
The funny thing is that KTM & BMW have all done a total redesign revamp of their small vehicles, but it was from the competition they had a lot of competition now in this market Enfield are killing it CF Moto are making inroads, Suzuki dropped the new drz and Honda have a new updated CRF 300 L and Rally
Oh now that they are doing this for the 390 ADV I hope they come up with the 390 smt I'll be first in the line at my local KTM dealer once they announce it.
I was eyeing the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. It's a great ADV bike from what I can gather. However, it's missing that little bit extra that I am looking for that the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R seems to provide. The only concern(s) or issue I have is the KTM's exhaust, and the reliability and maintenance schedule. The KTM line just brings the fun factor (bigger than than the current 390), just no denying that. I just couldn't bring myself to get the current 390 for reasons mentioned in the video. The Honda CRF300 Rally is a great bike in so many ways and yet falls short enough that you need to spend more money for a bump to increase the lethargic HP and soft suspension. I don't want the Yamaha T700, great bike, but it's top heavy, too heavy and has low range. Let's not even talk about the full size 1000cc+ ADV bikes. ADV bikes in general in the market have just gotten too big and too heavy. I am not looking for an ADV that pretends it's an enduro. I am looking for a light weight 400cc-ish ADV bike that gives me what I like in the larger bikes (like cruise control, ride-modes, ABS on/off, traction control, adjustable quality suspension, appropriate wheel sizes) in a smaller, lighter package. An ADV bike is a bike that allows you to tour the world on and off-road. It's not meant to be a dedicated street bike nor a dedicated single track enduro. It goes from tarmac to dirt on and off again over vast distances due to range providing you with adequate performance again, on and off-road to make it possible. I think the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure and Adventure R along with the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 are answering the call many riders have been asking for; a smaller, lighter form factor capable ADV bike. Choose your weapon, I don't think you can go wring with either bike, it just depends on if one meets your needs more than the other one. In my case it does seem to me that the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R does that. Of course there is more evaluation to be done, but from a first glance I think we may have a winner!
CFMoto450MT not in the offing? To me its the CF or Hinmmy at this point if i wanted a woods style travel bike like the 390-R i would buy a Suzuki 400 and put a tank and rally console on it...i am concerned KTM will be out of business and their warranty issues are not good...but its a lovely package
As a future motorcycle driver, do you think this ktm is a good bike to start me or is it too much? I'm over 40 years old, the idea is to enjoy dirt and asphalt.
Everything goes full circle. The 70/80s Trail bikes were popular for good reason. Cheap(ish) fun & multi talented. Manufactures have never (recently) recognised that the average working class guy who's into bikes can't afford or justify ten or even five grand on a what is essential a luxury item. If the Chinese (or whoever) can knock out an XL25OR for £3000 with a long warranty they deserve to clean up. The NVT Rambler was a fairly poor effort in the dying throws of the UK bike industry. Remake it today & it would sell. Give them what they want not what U say they need. Ask Donald. KTM bring back the 200 Duke chuck some trail tyres etc bung it out at £3999. I's buy one.
The elephant in the room is: why does this weigh likely 403lbs curb when the kove 800x weighs 408lbs curb and will likely be the same price or cheaper. The answer is its built off the duke 390 platform which ktm needed to conform to A2 license requirements, and just kept adding weight to give it the ‘adventure comforts’ that people want. And ktm still managed to make it way lighter than other ‘lightweight’ advs (ibex 450, himalayan)
I don't know why they don't just keep the weight down and restrict the power to meet A2 requirements via the ECU, then if you want you can unlock full power with an ECU flash, kind of like what Suzuki and Yamaha do with the sv650 and mt07
@ i asked an AI that question and it says KTM only likes to offer restricted options their larger engine bikes (eg, duke 790, enduro 690 r) for A2. They prefer to leave the 390’s and below unrestricted. I guess theres an element of simplicity and cost to that.
@@Weltbummler23 In other words they just skimp out on design and materials to keep the cost down, but then the dr650 is about 20kg lighter than this bike, its 250cc bigger, it doesn't use new material, its got mid 90's tech like a steel frame and tank.
@@benjy288 yup pretty much at that point any type of design optimization for weight goes out the window. You may be right that they use the excuse to produce cheaper bikes that they sell at a premium. Whatever the case, true utility bikes (400-500cc) are practically a dead category.
@@constantinosschinas4503 What? 96hp? what bike are you talking about? plus there's no minimum weight limit, there's simply a power to weight limit, a grom is A2 compliant and that only weighs 102kg
@@benjy288 I don't make the rules. The 175Kg minimum for A2 exists. The grom is low CC should be compatible with even lower than A2.
Is it made in China or India?
India
it's a lot heavy for what it is, i think that the 690 still a better deal!!!
The 690 is very expensive, unless you can find a used one, otherwise a dr650 would be the better choice if you can get them in your country.
@@benjy288
I already have a DR650, great that people still remind and mentioning this legendary bike :)
the difference between the 690 and the 390 adventure is more or less than a 4k$, but the new one shown in this video is a new model with a lot of difference, a far better WP highend suspension, many accessories, etc, it's sure that it will cost much more than the oldest one, and the difference price between it and the 690 would be insignificant!!!
I wasn't talking about price, but in term of lightweight off-road.. this bike weight 185 kg wet without any accessory on it, with a metal skateplate, crash bars, etc, it will turn to a mammoth that has nothing to do with what it supposed to be, that's why I still prefer the 690.
it remind me the T700 that everyone is swearing with except me who still think that it's a heavy big fat bike that shouldn't be mentioned as a mid or lightweight enduro!!!
@@Maximius38 Damn, the 690 is literally twice the price of a dr650 in NZ
@@benjy288
Even more, I have a fully modified DR650 under 9k$
Man this is going to be a killer bike, it looks the part and seems like it has the feature set to match. I don't expect it to be cheap compared to the Himalayan for example but I think it'll be way more offroad capable, will have better electronics and is significantly lighter. Can't wait!!!
Everybody who wants can piss easily into the cooling liquid😂
Indo indo karo asia cino terkait ....mboh kenopo utekke ...
thanks to China and their efforts in terms of Adv bike (Kove, ect) finally KTM has decided to produce useful and cheaper single cylinder dual bikes after years of many not useful uncomforble bike like 690 that required many many money to set up as Adv bike. I cannot unserstand why KTM has not never produced a 690 Adventure...mistery of wrong marketing.
Menos electrónica y menor precio, narices!! Menos mal tenemos las nuevas himalaya 450 y la mt450 muchísimas mas baratas!
360? Really?
390 lol. Power is ok but imo it's too heavy for it's size!
I would never buy a KTM. KTM couldn't care less for its customers.
Oh, and their bikes are massively overpriced, and hugely uninspiring.
So why bother watching this video and post a comment on it? Strange.
@@Rufus-OGAttention craving snowflake :))
@@Rufus-OG Maybe so that people looking into buying a KTM can see his opinion? for example the whole 790 890 cam issue is a good example.
I have had a 390 Duke for four years without a single problem. 100 per cent reliable, it also doesn't use a drop of oil between 5,000 km oil changes. Fantastic bike.
