I just found a bunch around a patch of dying oaks. Will it fruit more than once a year? The ones I found were well past edible and many had been eaten, I assume by deer.

Interesting video. Other really cool and interestig aspect, IMO, is that they are bioluminescent. Some more than others (it depends on the species, variety and growing substrate). Actually is one of the most bioluminescent fungi genus if not the most, having in mind the area that it can cover (it can make entire stumps glow for example or large areas of soil and leaf litter). The glow produced is usually green-blue but some may produce green-yellow. It´s mainly the mycelium that glows, because fruiting bodies only glow for a short period of time, when it are really young and soft.
I did not know this species was bioluminescent! Very cool! How does the glow produced by this species compare with the glow of a jack-o-lantern mushroom?
@@ABirdingNaturalist In terms of what, intensity?If so, around the same, I think. Color wise , jack-o-lantern has more green into it, I think, while Armillaria may offer blueish tones (at least the ones I saw)..... Some may present green-yellow, though. It´s a bit tricky to pick jack-o-lantern mushrooms when they are glowing at its brightest, but I was fortunate to get some and it was a great sight!!. Mostly when some fruiting bodies may grow a lot (over 20 cm in diameter). I have also seen Armillaria mellea mycelium glowing at its peak and it was awesome too! It can cover huge surfaces. Surprisingly Armillaria mellea is not the brightest European Armillaria, but it still can produce spectacular sightings. Once I found a huge rotten oak log glowing and one could see it even from a great distance, on the forest during the night. I cut it before for wood during the afternoon, so I guess that the disturbance may have induced its glow.
It is almost never a good idea to eat wild mushrooms raw. Pretty much always cook them. In terms of recipes, I think they cook and taste a lot like shitake mushrooms.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. You are correct that Armillaria grow on dead wood. For this video, my camera was set up on an old tree stump, and I suspect this Armillaria was connected to that stump through its mycelium. That mycelium is what spreads out under the soil and can grow so big.

I need to learn more about fungi because I was taught about medicinal and edible plants aks a child (c.10years and from there on) but I never learned about mushrooms other than which to avoid (but I would never claim I knew all the poisonous ones, just the better known ones which leaves a lot that could be harmful) I am watching and reading all I can as I recently made some dietary changes and I am in need of some non animal proteins.

Hi David! Thanks! Honey mushrooms generally pop up in early winter and live on dead trees. They are pretty generalist and can grow on oaks and conifers.
"To steal a metaphor" great, hey can I borrow that one? The sporing is so heavy it looks like snow. Learn deadly galerina first. Those are overgrown, smaller buttonish stage is better. They kill a lot of trees. Also there are six different types that fit the profile. Never had the guts to try them tho after 8 to 10 years I am confident on identification.
@alidee5119 I'm not really sure about aerating the soil. It would not surprise me if they did create some disturbance and aeration of some kind. In terms of killing trees, they don't always kill the trees they grow on. If the tree is very young, very old, or sick, then Honey Mushrooms often do contribute to the tree's demise.

Yes, this species does have a ring, or annulus, on the stem below the gills.

That's a great question! And yes, these mushrooms do have a prominent, white ring (also called a skirt or annulus) on the stem.
