    I graduated college in 1999 and I swear things did not feel as old as this footage looks!

    This generation Cutlass was never intended to be permanent. It was only a filler model to fill in the gap of the Ciera discontinuation and the Alero arrival. Ciera was discontinued in 1996, and Alero production began in mid 1998 as a 1999 model, but they didn’t discontinue the Cutlass until a year later. Though the Alero was originally said to be the replacement for the Achieva, it’s also the replacement for this Cutlass.

    I bought a 1999 Cutlass GLS, after the purchase I was reading Consumer Reports. They picked the Cutlass as one of the worst cars they ever tested. Fourteen years & 166 thousand miles later I had to get rid of it to get a vehicle with more air bag protection. That 99 Cutlass took us everywhere, NEVER left us on the side of the road, never, possibly the best car I have ever owned...so much for Consumer Reports.

      Actually that generation Malibu was built until 2005. As the Malibu classic. Gm always used to build a classic model when they redesigned a vehicle.

      I mean you're both right but the truth is this car came in three versions the cutlass was made before the Malibu body style and the classic was made after the Malibu to give the car a newer vibe to it as it has a two point two liter ecotec engine also the cutlass is faster than the classic on the speedometer.

    Such a rip off in price compared to Malibu. With the Cutlass history this was a slap in the face. The Intrigue should have been called Cutlass, and this car should have been named Intrigue by Malibu

      Our local GM dealer at the time sold both Chevrolets, and Oldsmobile products. They used to park the Cutlass next to the Malibu offerings on the lot. When you looked at both the Malibu was much cheaper in price. The dealer also said the Malibu sold 10 to one Cutlass. They also said the price was the reason for the strong sales of the Malibu. The cars were rebadged engineering at GM. The Oldsmobile brand should have had it's own offerings. Oldsmobile disappeared soon after from the auto market. What a shame. If Oldsmobile had it's own product that was not a rebadged Chevrolet, they would have still been around today. My grandpa owned several Oldsmobile products before switching to the higher end Buick products.

    • @c64walkabout40
      @c64walkabout40  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It was a re-badged Malibu basically with better standard options (no stripped down base trim level was available) and interior appointments than the Chevy. The Bravada was similarly a nicer Blazer at the time, with the addition of an exclusive all-wheel-drive system, standard fog lights, heated seats, that sort of thing. If you got the nicest Chevy trim level you could approach it, but they always kept one or two exclusive features for the Oldsmobile if it was a rebadge.
