      I think people would think that 1900s Victorian and Edwardian architecture is too over the top. O think we should keep the wood paneling and intricate designs but less overkill so it doesn't overwhelm passengers. Lie a mixture of Art Deco and Victorian.

    • @KeepCalmContemplateYourChoices

      @Pink Girl By over-the-top, I mean not everyone will like it. Some people might think it's gaudy or that it looks weird. Some people like modern architecture better than past architecture. I said in another comment we can keep the wood and the detailed designs, just tone it down a bit so it's not so In-Your-Face.

    Some corrections:
    0:01 Olympic's original wheelhouse should have seven windows, not five.
    0:16 The green I used here is much darker than it would have actually been. The wrought iron balustrades should also be green, not black.
    1:06 By this point, the paneling to the dining saloon was painted pale pink and blue.
    1:31 The barrier separating the promenade should be a set of bostwick/collapsible gates, not a set of rails.
    1:37 There should be a bar at the forward end of the room as well as a load of plants throughout the room.
    1:47 Same corrections as with 0:16
    1:51 There should be a window to the left of the door looking into the barber shop (as well as a little red and white barber shop pole).
    2:11 and 2:16 The hatches below the lids should be painted black.

    Everyone can lament the scrapping of the Olympic, but one needs to take into account the context of the time. It was 1935, and the world was still slowly trying to claw its way out of the Great Depression. Scrapping of these old liners brought much needed work to towns where most people had been without it for years. Preservation was also still in its infancy. Not many people at the time had the mind for saving old pieces of machinery for future generations to appreciate. It’s a miracle we still have the Queen Mary!
    Olympic and others built in the early 20th century were by the 1930s quite outdated and expensive to operate compared to newer vessels. White Star Line was also in very bad shape financially. Upon merging with Cunard, the new company could not justify keeping the old behemoths like Olympic and Mauritania in service. Their operating costs were just too great, especially during the depression.

  • @cunard61
    @cunard61 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The Olympic was a victim of the Great Depression, in the year 1934, after the merger with Cunard, the company was trying to decide which of the older ships would work best with the forth coming Queen Mary. In the year 1934, the Olympic racked up a total loss of nearly 15,000 British pounds, despite the major overhaul she'd had a few years earlier. This was the greatest loss among the companies Atlantic Express liners, the Mauretania being a full time cruise ship during that year. I think it was this sad record for 1934, coupled with her 22 knots speed that sealed her fate. The slower speed made her the most economical of the company's Express ships, but they also knew that at least three of those ships were going to have to go. Looking back, we can see now that they should have kept Aquitania, Majestic, and Olympic. When the Queen Mary entered service, Majestic or Olympic could have been kept in reserve, for emergency use.

      @Inanna 🗝️ Inanna 🕯️ Hiedra Sumeria They were not looking for innovation, they needed a money earner, and Aquitania was the best money spinner the company owned at the time. The depression was a hard time for almost every business.

    • @markrl75
      @markrl75 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechnologicallyTechnical - I was under the impression the panelling had been restored to its original wood varnish finish. It certainly looked that way to me when I stayed there in Alnwick a few years back. It looked magnificent. I always wondered if the green finish was a stain (which would have required removal of the original varnish) or simply painted over green emulsion paint. I suspect the later as by 1934 Cunard were pretty skint. Getting the green emulsion paint off would have been far easier.

    • @TechnologicallyTechnical
      @TechnologicallyTechnical  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      markrl75 It's funny you should mention varnish, as it was recently discovered that Olympic's grand staircase had varnish applied, but only for a brief period (1920-1928). The green staining was added in 1933, so that works out. But yes, from what I've heard, the White Swan just painted over the green. Didn't realize staining was so difficult to undo, but that makes sense as most of the surviving paneling is still green to this today (albeit, the green's a bit faded nowadays)
