I think I see what you are trying to say but to me this is the problem. I think (and forgive me if I’m wrong) but people like a Simon in the industry have this view of “i created them” as if they are some sort of parent or god. However they are not. In this case he may manufacture a band and give them, or solo artists, their big break. For that and his work he gets a good share of the profits. But greed means they always want more, usually at the expense of the artists. They are not his creation. They are not puppets or statues. They are human beings, just like you and all, with all the hopes, fears, flaws and frailties we have. They should not have to forgo their humanity and their rights just so others can get rich. We all know what can happen when people are forced to live out fake lives, overworked, or forced to deny themselves. It’s not good, it’s not right, it’s unhealthy, and can even be fatal in some cases and, in my opinion, it’s abuse and must stop.
@f.h.7671 Well, I wouldn’t go so far as to lay the blame for that at Simon’s door. That however is not to say that it might not have been a contributing factor to the original problems that, along with other things, might have ultimately led to those tragic events.
Listening to this interview, directly after Liam's very touching and very human interview.. Simons interview won't age well. Perhaps his interview will finally prompt the much needed duty of care Liam mentions.

It's nice and pure of you to say that but I doubt you've ever had to deal with a foul tempered drug and alcohol addict with severe depression who is violent.
The whole thing about never complaining especially in regards to privacy invasion and schedule is almost psychopathic. He’s not learned a damn thing about what his greed has done to people. Also, he thinks there hasn’t been boy bands as successful since One Direction bc he’s not the one profiting off of them
Exactly..they were teenagers and they skipped education and learning about themselves process. Nobody explained to them that it is work..after doing work they had their problems, life events, they shouldn't be gossiped about and exposed to jealousy and being misunderstood and constantly explaining their actions. Poor Liam, wish I could hug him and explain that it's OK to disappear for a while. MJ was bloody successful but it was before the Internet.
He's not wrong though, there isn't a single celebrity recording artist that hasn't been affected by the fame of their career choice. Simon Cowell doesn't make those rules or set those requirements, he can't change them either. It's a hazard of the job they've chosen and he clarified that to them, but he didn't inflict it on them. Radical acceptance is an illusive thing for a lot of people and many never figure it out at all, it requires ego mastery and a lot of emotional intelligence and those things just aren't abundant in our society. But it truly doesn't help anyone to live life with a denial of uncomfortable truths. It would not have benefited them to enter into a demanding career blind, with no concept of what was in front of them. The only merit to your criticism is that they were still children. Whether they had the maturity and wherewithal to understand the full weight of the consequences of what they were agreeing to, for them to make an informed decision when they signed their lives over, is definitely an arguable point of contention. But then the irresponsibility and mismanagement falls onto their parents for allowing them to enter into a dangerous agreement, they were responsible for making their child's decisions until they were old enough to make them for themselves. Do I think this is a healthy profession for kids? Absolutely not, I think it causes irreparable psychological harm and severely arrests development, but none of that is Simon Cowell's fault and he let them know what they were in for.
@@lblincoe2094 Interestingly BTS have a few songs that addressed this exact thing. Lyrics from another song of theirs about fame and success "Sea" are "In the end the desert became an ocean with our blood sweat and tears. But why is there this fear in between the happiness? Its because we know this place is truly a desert." I think Simon is hoping he will find a new boyband before BTS come back from the military. He needs to hurry up, Jin and J-Hope have already finished.
Simon is forgetting the boys were underage..try telling a 16 year old if u r not prepared for photos and fame don’t do it, errr hello ?! At the age of 16 u can’t even imagine that dark side of fame. It looks like he is trying to reflect that he gave such a great advice to the boys … I wonder why duty of care was not exercised ? He states they made lots of money , but so did HE! In fact it’s exploitation and no duty of care towards young artists in music industry ! Time for a change !
Also, you can have privacy even with fame. You just have to put healthy boundaries down with the fandom. There are some very messed up things about the BTS fandom. But holy hell we police ourselves well when it comes to protecting BTSs privacy. Fandom rules are if BTS is in public, you pretend you don't know them. The max that is considered acceptable behaviour by the majority of the fandom is a wave or a smile and then you walk away. No photos, no videos, no asking for a autograph. You also don't tell anyone where they are, or where they went unless they reveal that on their own social media. Anyone that invades their privacy is labelled "sasaeng" which is a Korean word for "crazy stalker fan that violates artists boundaries." Some members of BTS still like to catch public transport, and are able to do so safely because of the fandom culture. We also typically avoid any event we aren't specifically invited to to allow BTS to move more freely and safely. If fans mob BTS car, they get torn to shreds on social media, and we have whole organisations within army dedicated to preventing that kind of behaviour. Its called the Purple Ribbon Project. Obviously we have our absolute nutters, but its one thing I like about this fandom. And it is continually a topic under discussion "how can we be supportive of BTS living normal lives and protect their privacy." Even stuff like their family members, in the 1D fandom we had their whole family trees as common knowledge, meanwhile in the ARMY V mentions a sibling and half the fandom goes "huh.... I had no idea he had siblings. Lol." I don't even know the genders of his siblings or how many he has or anything, and I'm been a fan for years. When J-Hopes sister got married and clips were released without their permission, hearing this the fandom self policed, refused to view them and blocked and reported anyone that shared them if they didn't take them down. We also will block paparazzi and refuse to view their photos or even discuss them because its an invasion of BTSs privacy. Its a very different culture to what I saw in other fandoms for western artists and kpop. The shit the Directioners, interviewers and the media pulled back in the day against 1D, that gets shut down so fast in army. Its just not seen as acceptable fan behaviour. In our minds, BTS give us so much, they have so much free content, to ask for more is selfish and unacceptable.
Yes!! Liam’s Law will protect new musicians from being abused by alleged greedy music industry. These people want to make profits off the talent and work of the creative talented musician doing all the work. The musicians love to sing and want to share their music but end of scammed by opportunistic people. Protect them by creating Liam’s Law .. a law that will allow Liam’s Voice to protect new musicians.

I get the backlash he is receiving, but then again he is a manager/business man. He does not see music/entertainment as an artistic form but as a business to make money. This is how unfortunately most managers/producers/companies are in the last 20+ years.
It just so happens that the business he's in is rooted in packaging the art of music to the widest demographic possible while locked in a cycle of discovery revolving around those who practice it. Simon as a talent show judge in the 2000s optimised the music industry at its most ruthless.
it's perfectly fine to focus on business but he could've at least also be a bit more mindful of their mental health. There's no reason why you can't do both.
@@burburchacha True. But at the end of the day, Mr. Cowell was just another shark in high waisted trousers and open shirts who prioritised money over the Bands mental and physical wellbeing.

these boybands have not much control at all...they are just products. THeir producers, managers and all the people behidn the scene do 90% of the stuff.
Maybe, but I think that's why it's important that members of a group aren't limited to do only group music. They should have the option to work on music outside the group too. Yes it's a lot of work to do both, but it's possible. For instance BTS has been a group for over 11 years, but they've also done a lot of solo music on BTS albums and their own solo albums.
Thats How kpop Works. The member can do solo without getting out of the group. I agree thats better. But kpop World is also kinda toxic lol @@crystalsnow1138

Big part of the fall off in the number of bands is the transition to streaming. It’s not as lucrative anymore, so splitting that income is far less appealing
in the old days songwriters and composers would write the songs and singers would simply sing the song. Basically nothing changed now except that they lie to the audience, copy older songs or just use ghostwriters and maybe the 'artist' is in the same room when a a song is name, but most are just singers basically...but this is a problem in interviews of course as it must seem the artist is super talented and special..so they act like the artist make the songs. It's basically just as much as businesss as it has alwasy been, but they figured if they lie to the public about stuff to sell more records that is the way to go forward. If Beyonce is asked about a song, she has to have a story readay about how she made it. THese days artists can not get away with 'I do not know, I did not write or compose this..i have i no idea what it's really about...I just perform and sing"
@devanman7920 Simon is an astute business man. He invests heavily into new acts. For the many months the band is being trained, Simon pays for everything. He invested millions in One Direction from day one. It's a huge gamble, but it paid off in this case. Each band member became extremely rich and Simon rightly benefited. What happened with Liam is very tragic. Behind the scenes there was a drive to get him into rehab for quite a while. Liam had just left rehab, so going to Argentina was not the best move. His girlfriend had to leave early and he started using substances immediately. I wish he had stayed home and attended AA.
No Simon, you don’t need to “own” the rights to the name, there’s always ways to work around contractual obligations that stipulate that band members who do not wish to partake, give consent to others to do so (and perhaps get a very minimal percentage in royal duties etc). I think in any event, for those who pull out of bands should be contractually released of all obligations and royalties with immediate effect so that other income to the band can take their place. There’s many ways to skin a cat as opposed to giving rights to record owners. Beware to all future bands considering signing up with him and others.
BTS? Kpop boy groups are bigger than any previous boy bands. I would say gen z and gen alpha are more obsessed than previous generations in this respect
Simon Cowell needs to be blacklisted. He regrets not owning the ‘One Direction’ name?! Of course the band members should own it! One Direction IS the band members! It’s like saying someone other than Taylor Swift can own her name! Louis Pearlman tried to do the same thing with Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. It didn’t work for him and it won’t work for Simon Cowell. Networks and record labels need to stay clear of this plan of his for a new boy band! The saddest part of this whole thing is that people will still turn up to the auditions. Despite everything that Simon Cowell has said and done people would still allow themselves to be exploited and compromised (physically and emotionally) just for a ‘chance’ of fame and fortune.
Taylor swift rights her own songs and didnt use a tv talent show, simon cowell created one direction so its very different, shouldnt he own what he created?
I heard one direction were basically already casted before they went on that tv show..it was just a good place to launch them. @@hbhd308 Simon Cowell owned plenty of 'rights'. Do you think he didn't profit from One Direction? He made more money off the band than you and I or anyone else could even imagine. The fact that he actually believes he should own their band name as well just shows how greedy and self entitled this man truly is. The 1D band (and brand) would be nothing if it wasn't for the members. Naming rights belong with the artists, regardless of how they were discovered. I recommend watching 'The Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story'
Agreed. For me it is a pity it does not show so much in his solo music. I mean, I am not saying his solo stuff is bad, I just think it could be so much more interesting with this voice of his. Listening to it now I would not have guessed that he was the best in their first performances and in my opinion he was.
With fame come many sacrifices. Yes, we all have careers, but we also have downtime so we don’t lose ourselves in the process. Artists, too, are human-not machines. We all make money, but at what cost? Liam is 31 years old now, and one has to wonder, what enjoyment has he truly had in life? Artists must embrace the paparazzi, and the constant media attention, and endure grueling, almost inhumane work hours. But at what point do we stop and consider the toll it takes? I’m sorry to say this, but those who worked with him, those who were essentially paid by him, have let him down. People working close had the responsibility and the opportunity to assess their mental health, to guide them through this overwhelming journey. Instead, these young boys were thrust into fame without being given the time or space to grow and find balance. One Direction didn’t rise to stardom for free-they paid with their youth and well-being, and the industry should have done more to protect and nurture them along the way. Nobody can walk away and say otherwise......When the first member left the band, that was ...... "Cry for Help" .... A Wake-Up Call the team missed!
It's interesting with the exception of Styles every member of 1D since the group went their separate ways laments about not enjoying the group's ascent enough.
Especially in hindsight, I have a problem with Simon saying that he tells potential artists "not to complain" about paparazzi, lack of privacy, grueling schedules, etc. When you sign children, they have no concept of what that means. And when children are touring, why can't they have a manageable schedule? They're still developing as human beings. They need to be better prepared and supported through this. They do NOT need to be told to shut up. Perhaps he'll get that when his son becomes a teen.
Watching this with the benefit of hindsight, there's comments that Simon makes that you'd almost miss if you weren't reading into what he was actually saying. "I always told them, don't complain about your privacy, don't complain about the photos, don't complain about the autographs" He essentially just told those boys "put up and shut up", locked them in their rooms and on tour buses, sent them off to work every single day for years, non-stop, and that's his idea of fun? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure those lads had some brilliant times throughout it all, but it's clearly left them all with deep scars. They were 16-18 year olds, ripped away from a normal world and pushed into the limelight within the blink of an eye. Harry Styles' parents mentioned somewhere that in the first 2 years after the X Factor Finale, he got to spend 5 days in his own home. It's just so sad to think of these teenage boys, away from home, surrounded by strangers in foreign countries and yet, everyone's screaming your name. It's one human experience I'm so grateful to have never experienced, let alone at such a pivotal age. Simon Cowell should be ashamed of himself for what he did to them and others in the pursuit of fame and fortune.
A lot of 17 year olds go to University away from home and don't see their family much, only in the holidays. Some 13 year olds go to boarding school and stay there weekends too. Imagine that going away from home at 13 to study. I know which I'd prefer - touring at 16 with 4 other band mates!
@@marykistnen6837 practically everyone I know went to university, very few of them spent that much time away from home, and at least they had some stability in those years. They weren’t living out of hotel rooms while being wizzed around the world.
Simon can't control the drugs they take they are grown men even when the truth comes out they will still.blame somebody don't let your children go down that road just tell them don't take drugs go get help
Does make sense. Simon said because they owned name and if one decided to not tour then the others can’t tour. But if Simon owned the name then if one Didn’t want to tour then the others can still tour as a tour or three and so on. The thing is Zayn left and they toured as a four. But Simon said if One pulled out they wouldn’t be able to
You know what would be revolutionary? A pop band who play instruments and their sound comes from the way they play. You can still have them work with songwriters to make sure the hooks are there, but I think it’s time to bring some human feel back to pop music.
Simon C has almost single handedly ruined the quality of music over the last 20 years. He sells records and creates a circus. But no quality music like the 60s to the 90s.
simon talking abit of bs he aint dumb he wanted the name and they told him no so needs to stop acting like it was his mistake the boys were on point and told him to jog on
He’s a A&R manager and business manager so he listens to musical acts and artist and if he likes them he gets them a record deal management deal ect he’s not a artist that’s why he is so un caring about the artist feelings and experience but that’s how the industry is sadly
Liam spoke about being "locked up" in their hotel room at moments. That was when he started hitting the bottle. As a manager/mentor etc. for the boys, my question is why was Simon not more involved in helping Liam navigate that? With the recent revelations about P.Diddy, Usher and Bieber, parents have basically left their kids in the hands of these executives, producers and managers. Is the money and fame really worth being exploited and spit out like bubble gum? Simon makes it sound like he gave them all the freedom in the world here...but from interviews with members of one direction the picture was a grueling tour schedule and record releases, that pushed the boys to exhaustion and little time for themselves, so easy to see why they'd get burnt out and susceptible to breakdowns, drug use etc.
I remember the look of pure jealousy on his face when he saw BTS rising, when they performed on one of his shows and said: see you at Wembley. Simon tried to create new boy group after 1D to try to rival bts, but failed You know why? BTS trained 3 years before debuting, they work 18 hours per day, they write and compose, they dance, they have rights to rheir music, freedom, and they have respect for eachother. Those boygroups Simon tries to make only want fame and money, they don't have skills or will to develop skills. Cause everyone want a tik tok hit.
I am sorry but BTS and all this K- Pop bands have even less freedom or rights and anything they do than 1D ever had. If they would have they would have a healthier balance of life and work. And they don’t train as a formed group but in massiv boot camps, where they even pay a fortune for their training not knowing if they ever get selected for a band or not.
ONE DIRECTION could have chose another direction and they chose again to do the same thing as solo artists. When they were teens parents needed to step in and chaperone to keep them grounded. RIP Liam
Knowing that Horan, Mailk, Payne (May he Rest in Peace) Styles, and Tomlinson all own equal shares of the group's name now it makes sense to me, why them as a group never disbanded, I don't know how English Entertainment laws function, I am hypothesizing if One Direction did officially end the guys would lose ownership of the name and all that goes with it. I could be wrong though. (Shrugs.)
If not literally then by pressure...its awful he is gone. Imagine reading shit about you daily..and some ex telling their business or people shouting at you all the time in public. It's not worth it.
2:35 - Josh Zerkaa loves numbers, spreadsheets and finds them exciting............. And he's part of the biggest, well-known group on TH-cam and after over a decade they are still a huge success, popular and growing, smashing Netflix and turning everything they touch into gold
In a nutshell, he made a hell of a lot of money through 1D. He probably had a percentage of all earnings for a minimum of 10 years. Simon Fuller did with all his acts, so I guess it’s standard practice. Elton John called these reality artists “Fodder” he’s pretty much right.
harry styles create the name so there you go its theirs!!!! if simon ownes it then you would not have anything just suffering and as a fan that is the least thing you would want, it just wouldnt work at allllll its obvious, and he want it to put an animated thing? like bro not even the fans want that, so make it make sense, the fans love them not the name, actually the fans HATE simon 1 Responder
so they styled themselves? thats crazy considering how great they all looked, btw does this mean they can never tour if zayn doesnt want to join the tour?
Why is people calling simon names he done nothing wrong ...he mad the man famous he no puff daddy.. Simon is a good person...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤h❤e is just a business man...❤❤❤❤❤❤
I concur with Cowell, with Liam Payne being deceased unfortunately, I really don't believe 1D will come back together, if they do, it will most likely be a new single they drop on streaming platforms. I hope I am incorrect but that's most likely what's going to happen, this isn't like what happened with the Jonas Brothers.
🎶Saying it to the boys and the actual enormity of such demand, lack of privacy, and world Fandom is incomprehensible until you are in it. Let's be honest the only good thing about bgt and xfactor are the auditions anything after that it's just some random kid with a 4 out 10 voice singing songs that don't suit their style because they've been teamed up with a failed comedian instead of someone who's been successful in the music business and the only person who can make your dreams come true has been left with the older 50s who have 0% chance of making it so I'm up for a new show where he dumps the celebrity sex tape singers and one off comedy Road show appearing comedian judges who's only input in life is white teeth and a high body count
He has a valid point, though. They know the pitfalls, and if being a star and having a chance at millions is what they really want, then there are other sacrifices that need to be made. As taxing as it is, doctors nurses and other civil servants don't even make a fraction and put in more and give up alot too. Liams death is a tragic reminder of the sometimes high price, but that is why having people around you who call you out and tell you no is so important
@FedericoCastro-wm8cl Harry is the one being protected and supported by powerful corrupt Azoffs. Lots of money 💰 The others have had the 1D help but they've had to deal with the music industry sharks 🦈 on their own. Possibly only Niall is also protected being still with modest management.
It’s worth it IF you want this level of success. I don’t like him but he is right saying this. If you don’t work your ass of you will never make it in this industry. That is a fact.

Simon's only regret is that he didn't own them more effectively.
And that's how we ended up here, in a nutshell.
THANK GOD THEY OWNED THE NAME. ONE DIRECTION FOREVER.
Hes pure greedy, he said he regrets 1D owning their own name
@@springday5333awful creature!
Simon Cowell is so cold and heartless. He's not HUMAN. HE'S a Monster.
It was Harry who came up with the name! This was on their X Factor video journey when Simon asked what name they came up with 😂
Simon is forgetting the boys were underage..try telling a 16 year old if u r not prepared for photos and fame don’t do it, errr hello ?!
Also there is „except people always wanting pictures with you“ and the boys being locked in hotel rooms after shows „to keep them save“
Anyone that invades their privacy is labelled "sasaeng" which is a Korean word for "crazy stalker fan that violates artists boundaries."
Some members of BTS still like to catch public transport, and are able to do so safely because of the fandom culture.
And it is continually a topic under discussion "how can we be supportive of BTS living normal lives and protect their privacy."
Even stuff like their family members, in the 1D fandom we had their whole family trees as common knowledge, meanwhile in the ARMY V mentions a sibling and half the fandom goes "huh....

I get the backlash he is receiving, but then again he is a manager/business man. He does not see music/entertainment as an artistic form but as a business to make money. This is how unfortunately most managers/producers/companies are in the last 20+ years.
Yeah absolutely. Imagine looking through his record collection it would be absolutely diabolical

Big part of the fall off in the number of bands is the transition to streaming. It’s not as lucrative anymore, so splitting that income is far less appealing
Touring is where artists make money, but touring is expensive.
All.of them are doing really well in their solo career. They own the songs. They wrote most of it.
in the old days songwriters and composers would write the songs and singers would simply sing the song.

I just don’t think this generation are obsessed with boy bands anymore

Why was Liam Axed from his recording label!
He shouldn’t regret such a impressive achievement that’s make people disappointed
You just said that 100% correct!!!❤

Because you did not control them, thanks to Louis!!!
Why ?
It's interesting with the exception of Styles every member of 1D since the group went their separate ways laments about not enjoying the group's ascent enough.
Especially in hindsight, I have a problem with Simon saying that he tells potential artists "not to complain" about paparazzi, lack of privacy, grueling schedules, etc. When you sign children, they have no concept of what that means. And when children are touring, why can't they have a manageable schedule? They're still developing as human beings. They need to be better prepared and supported through this. They do NOT need to be told to shut up. Perhaps he'll get that when his son becomes a teen.
One of the most real interviews Simon has ever done. Very well done.
Those boys earned that name.. One Direction is with its rightful owners, 🎶5 talented creative hardworking dedicated individual artists. 🎶🇮🇪🎶🇬🇧

Sam Smith, Calvin Harris, Rag n bone
Watching this with the benefit of hindsight, there's comments that Simon makes that you'd almost miss if you weren't reading into what he was actually saying.
"I always told them, don't complain about your privacy, don't complain about the photos, don't complain about the autographs"
He essentially just told those boys "put up and shut up", locked them in their rooms and on tour buses, sent them off to work every single day for years, non-stop, and that's his idea of fun?
You should be ashamed of yourself for posting nonsense on here.

It's rotten!!
I still love Simon after all these years and will always be a fan of One Direction
Well Said...
I remember the look of pure jealousy on his face when he saw BTS rising, when they performed on one of his shows and said: see you at Wembley.
Simon tried to create new boy group after 1D to try to rival bts, but failed
You know why?
