      Thanks Zack! I would not have been brave enough to be this far along in my journey if it weren't for all the free education I get from you and the others. (I think now that I was wrong about feather-sexable. Which is fine. I was outside today trying to peek at their private parts! They do not like to be held on their backs do they?!!! I had success in that none of them escaped! Haha)

    I am also a newbie and have been watching Zack's videos and joined the Facebook groups. I have been thinking of starting out with a breeding group also, because all of the equipment is quite an expense. I am so excited and happy for you and you did receive some lovely colors. I look forward to watching your quail adventure.

      Oh shoot.... I thought I had replied to this! I must not have hit the reply button. I hope you are able to start out with a breeding group also. I've been watching for inexpensive brooder ideas before I try to hatch any. I hope to hear about your quail adventures soon.

    eggs are ok to eat up to a couple weeks outside of refrigeration and a few weeks longer in refrigeration. Most quail in captivity will not set on their nest so you don't have to be concerned about them being fertile. And generally you can expect an egg from each of your hens daily as long as they aren't stressed and have enough to daylight hours.

    Love your video and your setup. One suggestion is to replace or put runner mat over the tile to avoid splay leg that is caused by slippery surfaces

    Congratulations . In the future you may want to use pvc coating hardware cloth for your flooring

    • @DawnRaeB
      @DawnRaeB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. PVC coated wire was not available here when I built the hutch. And so far, over these months, they are doing very well on the wire/tile/sandbox bottom. No problems except the injured foot from the snake biting toes from underneath.

    You can eat those eggs, just so you have correct info. They can last up to a month outside the fridge at room temp before they are refrigerated. Also quail rarely go broodie , so there isn’t a high chance they have developing chicks in the shipped box eggs.

    Put a little bit of straw or hay in your cage, the poop will still drop through but it’s much more comfy for the quails to walk on. Imagine you are living on a reinforcing iron mesh used for concrete slabs. Blank tiles are even worse, very slippery for birds used to foraging the woods. Just imagine you are living in the cage!

    • @DawnRaeB
      @DawnRaeB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment and concern. It is wonderful that so many people have and love quail. However, they are doing very well on the wire, tile, sandbox/box combination. If I were to imagine living in the cage, I know for a fact that the tile is easy to scrape and wash clean. I prefer that to walking across something that retains any amount of the poo.

  • @caseyoutdoors3897
    @caseyoutdoors3897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You better switch their feeder to that style of feeder they will waste a lot of food. I use a plastic shoebox and cut holes in the side of it an inch and a quarter so they have to stick their heads in.

    • @DawnRaeB
      @DawnRaeB  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I will take any tips I can get. Is there a reason they'd do better on wood than a smooth surface? ( I think I know ow that is important in the incubator but I didn't know that as feathered birds)

    • @thelarochellefarm595
      @thelarochellefarm595 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Someone told me that the ones with some white markings were "Tuxedo", I think the golden colored one is Autumn Amber, the more plain gray is a Fee (I think). Some of the colors (like the Tuxedos) have different names based on having a slightly different tone to their colors. So... I'm really not sure. Sorry. Hey Hobby Farm... this is not a Zack/Myshire Farm channel. This is my channel -- just a personal video of my MyShire quail arrival. I saw you on the MyShire live on Sunday though. The best way to get ahold of Zack and tell him your hatch rate is to text him at his phone number (he says text is better than a phone call because the quail barn is so noisey). If you have problems getting ahold of him by text message at his phone number, be sure to attend one of his lives again... and you can tell him about your hatch rate there. Bummer about your low hatch rate. :(

However, I have been watching people like Jasmine Bass (she has a comment below) who are very successful with their quail in aviaries. I'm not sure that would work at all for me here but I've been watching people like Jasmine and considering it. First, I need to get my chickens outside and see if they survive.
