Thank you very much for uploading this video. I had spent half an hour mucking around and scratching my head, checking the port settings within the software were in line and matching everything configured within the OS. Your tip about having to have the baud within the software at a DIFFERENT setting (36000) to the OS (9600) got it working for me. Thanks again, very grateful.
I was going crazy trying to get my ELM327 working (everything I found about setting it up was in bad English via a Hong Kong site) and this really helped. Changing the Buad was the key, and connecting the OBD to the car, (turning the engine over/on) then the usb to the laptop. I think the scantool.net is too simple and if youre redirected to the website of the same name you'll be warned (hopefully) that the site is an attack site,YAY! Thanks for the help.
That makes a ton of sense, actually. :) AND, for anyone else reading the comments, also having display issues, consider disabling Aero in Windows 7, and going to the Windows 7 "Classic" theme. An app designed in Windows XP may behave better like this.
is your obd II the one that is bluetooth? or the one thats like wired to ur latptop? and do u know if it'll work when i buy the bluetooth adapter so it can work on my laptop???
I am using Vista x32. First, installed the Vista drivers included on the install CD. Next, went to device manager and changed the baud to 38400 and set the baud in the program setting to 38400. It works!! My program version is 1.13. On the ScanTool.net page there is a newer version 1.21 that I will try later.
@kuningmuda i am trying to do that now , did you get yours? i bought a cheap usb adapter from ebay for 1.50 and i am trying to pair it up with my elm327 bluetooth. i am having lots a problems with the com settings .
Hey thanks for making this video it helped me A LOT! The only problem I still have is the program still won't refresh automatically even after changing to 16-bit color. But I can tell you what most of that stuff means :D -open loop means its running on default fuel settings, cars run on open loop until the oxygen sensors heat up -closed loop means it is using the sensors(like the o2 sensors) to regulate the fuel
Thank you for posting this. Like you, I got an OSB2 cable and scantool, and I have been trying to make them work. I will try checking the port and baud rate.
so it wont configure in the device manager it tries to update the driver but nothing happens any help would be great i havent been able to drive my car for months
nice man what is your car cus i cant make it work on my 06 altima 3.5 idid all the com port stuff and it didnt work i tryed it on my frinds chevy silverado and it worked idont know is it from my car or what?
Dude. Dude. Dude - thank you. Bought one of the cheap, clear blue, blue tooth dongles which would connect with apps on tablet & laptop but not my vehicles ('98 ford explorer) ECU. Went back to the trusty old USB & free version ScanTool & switched to COM1 and was able to clear my code. Prefer the TorqueLite, etc. for actual gauges while driving but again, bought the wrong connector wanting to use BT. Webz sez stay away from ones with MAC addresses such and such and versions 2.XX - just visit some of the related sites.
Hi how did you get that software, i cant make my elm327 to work the program cd disc i got in package dont work, so i need a software, can you help me get same as yours?
-short term fuel trim, the computer adjusts fuel settings for driving conditions in the short term. Like if you are late for work one day and you are hard on the gas -long term fuel trim, same as short term but over a longer period of time. Take for example a teenage boy's car vs. a old lady's car. The boy's car has much higher fuel settings over time -bank 1 and bank 2 designates which side of the car that sensor is on(search google to find out which side is which)
"I have no idea what any of this stuff means." Yep, sounds like me. I ordered one of these items (in the mail) and I'm no automotive engineer. But I want to use the data logging ability, if it has it, so I can build a database for my car for analysis later on (and to compare when engine has problems). Some may ask, "do you understand this data?" No, but all them plots on Excel will look cool like those analyzing Mil-Std 1553 data.
somebody help me plz! i have it hooked up and discovered as ''CHX'' bluetooth. the problem is that in programs like PCMSCAN the guages are working on their own! i don't do anything and RPM/MPH gauges jump up and down.... wtf is that?
If you want to fully utilize these you must find out what these terms mean and its not that complicated to understand basic feedback function from sensors and how CPU adjusts based on.
tried all ports and also matching them by changing them in device manager, all i get is "your port isnt ready" or sometimes when changing, "configure port" which i keep doing, tried changing to 38400 or something too still nothing, please help
Hi there... I've never tried it with android. What android device are you looking at with the USB port? The tricky part is that the android MUST support the serial-to-USB component built into the hardware reader. (Android *IS* Linux... maybe this isn't much of an issue.) If I ever get my grubby fingers on a tablet or phone with USB connectivity in HOST mode (not the same as your charger port), I would gladly demo such a setup.
No, this strictly the USB model. No Bluetooth or wireless of any kind. I've never seen the Bluetooth variant of this device, but it *should* create a COM port just like the wired version. The trick is to configure that Bluetooth to COM1 INSIDE OF DEVICE MANAGER. If you configure your COM in the scantool software, but not Device Manager, it wont work. The COM numbers must be the same. And this particular program I used seem to only prefer COM1. Use device manager to config your port to COM1.
-evap system is the system that controls fuel vapors and such so your car doesn't blow up LOL -cat temperature, temps of the catalytic converters on the exhaust. they need to be really hot to burn off harmful emissions but too hot can mean that it is clogged and needs to be replaced.
Go so SF.net and search for "OBD II" or "OBD 2". You may find another software product that will work better. Going to "ScanTool.net" a while back advertised a for-pay product. The program I used came on a disk with the OBD-II serial adapter. Since I didn't actually purchase the adapter, I don't know where it came from. (Some generic eBay listing or something.)
Something is wrong with that install. I never got that error message, even when I intentionally pointed it to a non-existent COM. So, first things first... 1. What version of Windows are you using? (XP/Vista/7/8?) 2. HOW did you install the OBD-II reader? (ie. "I got drivers from a disk") 3. Are you using the SAME software as the video? 4. What COM and baud is the OBD-II device currently configured to? (Find this in Device Manager.) 5. What COM and baud is the scanner software configured to?
Hi, I tried all ports and also matching them by changing them in device manager, all i get is "your port isn't ready" or sometimes when changing, "configure port" which i keep doing, tried changing to 38400 or something too still nothing, please help me. Same problem as the guy posted this comment 5 months ago. thanks
Excellent video. Thanks. For anyone having a CAN error: Click on About, then OBD information. For some reason this is what I had to do to establish the link. Then I could back out and use the program as normal. How odd...
Thanks for the reply , i've tryed with android 4.0.4 without success . then i've tryed with my laptop with no success too , i think that elm327 doesn't work with x64 OS .
hola hoy adquiri el scanner e instale el driver , como se usa para saber que funciona mal en mi auto , tengo un 206 2.0 HDI . el video esta en ingles y no entiendo nada. si pueden pasarme un video o un tutorial les agradeceria .
Hey, sorry for the long reply time. I totally missed the comment some how (and I'm sure you've already moved on with life), but here is my answer... The car in the video is a 2008 Taurus X SEL. It's using OBD II. Your Altima being an '06 should also be using OBD II. I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work the same, BUT I'm not a mechanic. My expertise lays on the PC side of things. Make sure the ELM lights up when installed and have the car actually running. Also, does a normal scanner work?
I've added a link for a multilingual OBD reader I located on the Internet. I can't recommend it to you, but if you choose to try it out on your own, let us know if it was what you were looking for.
Not that I can see. I think the dealerships have special software (this is how they can reprogram certain things), but that is the extent of my knowledge on the subject. You can *write* a program to do this, but I can't even begin to summarize the dangers of writing untested code to an embedded device that was never designed to be consumer-maintained. (That assumes that the OBD-II supports bi-directional communication.) Not to mention it is illegal to do some stuff... (ie. odometer rollbacks.)
Device is in the way on my car's OBD port. Had to buy an extension cable to move it out of the way. They are pretty cheap. Paid $9 for this one at Amazon and it worked great. /DADI-Dongles-OBD-Extension-Cable/dp/B00G3BWKP8
There are several software products like this out there... Go to SF.net and search for "OBD II" or "OBD 2". There is some software on there that will probably work for you. That being said, I never had a reason to try any other software product.
Alfredo, It is against United States Federal law to tamper with the odometer reading on a vehicle. If you need the mileage on a vehicle changed because of a repair (ie. dashboard instruments or ECU replacement), the dealership can do this for you. Thanks.
fuel system 1 status: Closed loop is something to do with temperature of engine Open loop = more fuel for cold engines Closed loop = less fuel for warm engines
@estrelladelorte1308, some of those generic Bluetooth USB adapters are really weird. It all depends on what drivers you have available, but I would guess you will have MUCH better luck with those Bluetooth adapters in Windows 7 than anything else at the moment. I did use the cable (no Bluetooth) variant of this, but getting a poorly operating Bluetooth connection to work for this could be causing more problems than anything else... Consider using a cable only. (Or using a BT app on your phone.)
dont have to mention the fact that in main page of TOAD after registering try to download the wis and epc for saab....the link is direct to MICROSOFT WINDOWS VALIDATION...THE REFUND IS COMING PLUS A REPORT IN EBAY
Omar, a lot of modern vehicles have computers that cap your engine revolutions to 4,000 RPMs when not in gear. (Park and Neutral.) Obvioiusly, this doesn't make any sense when you are actually driving the vehicle, and the car in the video goes well beyond 4,000 RPMs when I'm driving... Believe me. ;)

The ELM327 in the video was demo'd with Windows 7 64bit. It *does* work with 64bit hardware/software, but there could be other issues as well.
Thanks for the reply , i've tryed with android 4.0.4 without success . then i've tryed with my laptop with no success too , i think that elm327 doesn't work with x64 OS .
Thanks. Thought so. But an ebay seller was trying to tell me other wise. Therefor I wanted to make sure before I bought one of these.
Take care

Two questions - what car do you have and why in god's name does it only rev to 4,000RPM?! That's crippled...!
@ExtraTerrestrials Hi, I have the same thing ...
Have you sorted it out already ? :)
@stevoinco i bought one couple months ago, is really nice and it works with this cool app on my android called "torque"
Thanks for your help, pal.

cant find ports in device manager on windows 8.1?
Press logokey+r. The "run" dialog should appear. Type "devmgmt.msc" and hit the enter key. This should open you device manager.
oh wait, you found device manager but you can't find port settings???
