After 2 weeks of obsessively searching for a new office chair, I started thinking to myself how comfy the seats are in my truck. Wondered what it would take to convert a car seat into an office chair and sure enough, it's been done and you created a video for it. Rock on JT!
I love it. I've wanted exactly that for years, as I sit on my butt most of the day. But now that I see the complexity of machining involved, it's clear I'd have to get someone to do it for me. Anyone who wanted to do this as a business might do quite well.
Beautiful. I've been planning to do this when my current chair becomes unbearable. It's good to see your approach for when I decide to try this myself.

How much would you sell that base for? I think its very cool that you have a step by step guide at instructables and you also have this video, but not many people have the power tools or experience to do the job, but if the only thing necessary is just assembling it and finding a compatible car chair, then that is something most people would be able to do.
I found some Mini Van seats in excellent condition took 1 home put it on a chair base without all this work and use it everyday .. Changed the castors though
I made one about 7-8 years ago. Best office chair I've ever tried. I still use it to this day and every person who tries it says "Can you make one for me?".
@@JTMakesIt Yeah I really don't know why streamers and influencers don't get someone to make one for them. When you think about it, car chairs are made to be comfortable for hours of driving, developed with a much higher budget and production costs. It's a no-brainer to me
I have been thinking for a year to make one and the best seat and best chair would been a car seat. I cant seat anywhere comfortably except in car seat . They have full lumbar support and they are very comfy. They are very good if you have back pain.
Brilliant! I was thinking about that today while driving, I said to myself: there won't be any more comfortable office chair than a car seat, I don't have the essential tools to do that but it worth thinking & trying. the video was made 8 months ago so tell us how is it now after that period?
Hi! Thanks for the comment! The seat is doing great. No problems at all. Did not need to further modify anything. I use it every day for 1 to 4 hours. I seat like a king compared to the previous regular office chair. Also check out my other video where i made a custom foot rest to go with this seat. :)
Very nice. I would like to see this done with electronic luxury sport seats out of a BMW. How nice it would be to have electronic adjustment of a fancy sports car at your desk. One would have to integrate a power supply somehow.
So just curious as I was kicking this around as well: Did you need to construct a base like that or could I just essentially attach the base of my office chair to the bottom of the car seat? Also could you manufacture a base for me and I will compensate?
Hi, I over-complicated it a bit, because I wanted to make it a bit lower. You will need some sort of an adapter plate between the base and the chair. It can be as simple as a wooden board. Sorry I don't take orders to make it. Maybe some local workshop could do it for you. It would be easier and faster.
my plan is to take this up one level and use a bench seat (with 2 sets of casters at the base of course) and make something that will allow my dog some space next to me
Did the seat have an airbag? It's from a 2015 car so i assume it does and you didn't mention if you removed it or not. Those things are quite powerful when they blow up so if anyone does this at home remember to remove any active airbags
Correct. I have indeed removed the airbag. I took the seat to the car mechanic who took it out. In the video description it says that you should take the seat to a professional for the airbag removal.
Yes of course. You could buy a AC/DC 12V power supply and hook it up to the heater and it should work. The heater should have a wires under the seat. They should be easy to identify. Only downside would be that you would have a cable hanging from below the seat. The battery would not be a good option because the heating can draw a lot of current and the battery would get empty soon. Since my seat is a passenger seat it also has a sensor which detects that someone is sitting on the seat (to beep the seatbelt alarm).I will use that in the future to turn on my computer or something :)
If you somehow manage to get the heating elements working, i would love for a video or at least a diagram. I'm also planning to make a office chair out of a Golf mk7 seat.
The heater needs to be thermostatically controlled for it to be safe. I don’t think you can just wire up the heating element to power - that will probably set the chair on fire or blow a thermal fuse. Cars have seat heater controllers and there are temperature sensors. Need to work out how to use a proper heater controller.
Thanks! I made this chair only for myself. I am not making them for other people since it takes a lot of time and luck finding the good car seat and a donor chair for the undercarriage.
It would be much easier if you could find a local welder. Every car has different seat mount. My friend also did not have a welder and he designed a laser cut plate for mounting it: th-cam.com/video/6U1h552XC1k/w-d-xo.html Maybe this could help you.
Nice project :) Just one advice: please disable autofocus on your camera and set it to manual, because it's very annoying to see it constantly go in and out of focus.
Thank you. Yes I agree. I saw this phenomena too late, when everything was already recorded. I recorded this video with my phone and in 60fps it has more agressive focus and I was unaware of that. I already have an order placed for the new GoPro. That should record much better.
Im going to try and attempt to do something similar with my old audi seat. Im an electrician and want to incorporate some electrical gimmicks into it. Im working out a way to make it into an office chair and retain the heating element and the electrical adjustments the seat has built in 😂 my only concern is the weight of the bloody thing hahahaha
I guess I was raised by ninjas :) The oil acts like a lubricant and coolant and prolongs the life of the drill bit. Check this video out: th-cam.com/video/v6QCrV4ZOiU/w-d-xo.html
@@JTMakesIt As coolant, the oil sucks, it retains the heat for longer and as for cooling, use water instead, you don't need lubrication, all the way around, you need friction to do the job. Cool result, tho.
I made it a little bit higher because this is the ideal height for my slightly higher than normal office desk. I will be making the leg support soon for my feet.
Why does the best office chair ever have all the plastic covers missing on the left side? First thing I did was remove the seat belt fastener - not really needed on an office chair.
Thanks for watching. On the left side there are no side covers inside the car originally, because there is center console right next to it. I left it this way, it's fine for me.
