This video shows a walking tour in Cascais.
    07 of November 2021
Renowned for its splendid white sand beach, countless shops and charming shopping streets, and its cosmopolitanism, the fishing village of Cascais has reinvented itself to become a refined seaside resort and one of the most sophisticated destinations in the area of Lisbon.
The city, located a few kilometers from the mouth of the Tagus, is nestled between the sunny bay of Cascais and the majestic Serra de Sintra. It has a delightfully maritime and refined atmosphere, attracting visitors throughout the year.
Cascais was once an elegant summer retreat for the Portuguese monarchy during the 19th century and a haven for European royalty during World War II thanks to the country's neutral status. Over time, this peculiar atmosphere has changed and the city has become a refined cultural hub, with a vibrant nightlife and an enviable quality of life. However, the splendor and icons of its maritime heyday have remained until today, through the elegant lighthouses, forts and the 17th century Citadel (“Cidadela”).
Largo de Camões marks the historic center of Cascais and is one of the favorite areas of locals and tourists. Its lively atmosphere, created by the numerous bars and restaurants, transforms the square into a charming and unavoidable place in the city - a special place to go out at night! If you're nearby, go down Rua Direita, the city's main shopping street, where you'll find pretty shops and street vendors. Nearby there are also small shopping centers, and the famous fairs in Cascais are excellent opportunities to buy handicraft items and good bargains.
With their traditional Portuguese black-and-white stone mosaic (called calçada), the streets are truly distinctive. Many of the houses in Cascais are still inhabited by the original families. Some of the most charming streets include Rua do Gama, Rua Tenente Valadim, and Rua Fernandes Thomas.
Leaving the center towards the coast, you may be lucky enough to see fishermen sewing their nets right next to their colorful boats, at Praia dos Pescadores. In contrast to this almost bucolic scene is the nearby Marina - a modern and sophisticated setting, where you can enjoy luxury yachts, taste gastronomic delights in refined restaurants or enter the boutiques and bars of the area. Cascais is also a magnet for night owls and offers a wide range of options, from cocktail lounges to cozy jazz bars and trendy clubs.
Lisbon is about half an hour by car from Cascais and Estoril along the scenic Marginal road. The train is also an excellent alternative, leaving you very close to the city centre. The trip is wonderful and allows you to discover the Costa do Sol, where the unique beauty of Cascais merges with Lisbon's historic heritage.
    Highlights
    Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth)
Living up to its name, this deep ravine is one of the great attractions of the Cascais area, having been formed by the fury of the Atlantic against the rocks. Today, curious visitors flock to this natural wonder to witness the spectacle of the ocean's huge waves breaking on the rocks.
    Conde de Castro Guimarães Museum
This museum, founded in 1931, is located in a manor house facing the sea, formerly belonging to Count Manuel de Castro Guimarães. It now houses a wonderful collection of 16th-19th century paintings, sculptures and antique furniture. The museum is surrounded by a beautiful garden and has a bookshop and a chapel, being an extraordinary example of the aristocratic tone that so well describes the Cascais of yesteryear.
Santa Maria House and Santa Marta Lighthouse
One of the picture postcards of Cascais, this house, designed by the architect Raul Lino, was built at the beginning of the 20th century by Jorge O`Neil, a descendant of the Royal House Sovereign of Ireland. Inside, its beautiful tiles and wooden ceilings stand out.
Next door is the Santa Marta Lighthouse, which now houses a museum dedicated to the former lighthouse makers.
    Cidadela de Cascais (Cascais Citadel)
Imposing fortification from the 17th century, built by the sea, it currently houses a luxury hotel (Pestana Cidadela Cascais) and an Art District.
    Estoril/Cascais Maritime Promenade
There are more than three kilometers of seawall, between São Pedro do Estoril and Cascais, which invites you to relaxed strolls by the sea. Along the way, there are lots of exercise equipment.

Boas imagens.
