Louisa Peck - The Near-Death Experience of a Hardcore Atheist

  • ABOUT LOUISA
Lousia Peck had her near-death experience in November of 1982. A rabid atheist, she was on a path of self-destruction that traced back to her alcoholic family. Drinking and infatuation were the two “twin highs” that dominated her broken life - until a near-death experience, and Alcoholics Anonymous, helped turn everything around.
    ABOUT IANDS
IANDS is a membership nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to advance global understanding of NDEs and related experiences through research, education, and support. We envision a future in which all people embrace near-death and related experiences as a source of meaning and inspiration for a better world. We believe NDEs can transform an individual’s life, influence the sciences, and embolden society. Today, IANDS engages in far more than research and has members from around the world. We invite you to consider becoming a member of IANDS. To learn more about near-death experiences, visit iands.org.

    What is an NDE?
A near-death experience (NDE) is typically a profound, life changing, intensely emotional experience that usually occurs during a clinical crisis and has common characteristics and aftereffects. It is not a dream, hallucination, or mental illness (Greyson, 1983). There are no predictive variables to identify who will have an NDE. They happen to people of all ages, religions, socio-economic groups, cultures, educational backgrounds, and belief systems. They occur under a variety of circumstances such as accidents, near-drownings, illnesses, combat, surgical procedures, and childbirth. Following an NDE, experiencers (NDErs) often display some common aftereffects. Research has established a set of common NDE characteristics and long-term aftereffects. Theories used to explain near-death experiences in purely physical terms have been proven inadequate by NDE researchers and others.

I saw this one on P. H. Atwater’s short documentary. I especially love the description of coming back to the body, then trying to communicate with her friend after experiencing the oneness. Being in form vs our true being. My Aunt talked about her NDE back in the late seventies , She said there are no words to describe the joy and beauty . This description here was fascinating especially when she is coming back into “form”. Oh, he thinks we’re separate. Great stuff. 😎

Most insecurities follow the “how you judge you will be judged” rule. People who judge others think they are being judged and they never feel adequate. Be merciful and forgiving and you will realize no one is judging you either.

It's tough to see so many comments from fundamentalists on NDE videos - ones that are highly critical, even damning.
I can lose patience and have to remember exactly what you wrote. Thank you. After two NDEs, I know God loves us all equally, eternally, immensely and without exception. No idea why that irks people, but what a great thing to experience.

It takes infinitely more faith to believe that life is a freak accident caused by some cosmic bang than a creation from a divine source. I’m always stunned at the hubris of some scientists who, because they can figure out how something works or why it happens dismiss the work of God.

      Hi Ken -
Sorry I'm so late seeing this, though I know in the timeline of adjusting to a loss, it's still so fresh. I'm so sorry to hear about your younger brother. As you know, he has moved on. It's great for him but super painful for those who miss him! As you are seeing in the TH-cams, his spirit continues. I lost my ex-boyfriend in July, whom I had to leave 8 years ago when he relapsed alcoholically. He died from it - sudden gastric hemorrhage - on his 60th birthday, alone. He came to me about 3 weeks later using songs on my playlist to communicate -- which is a weird but real thing. The first song, "I Will Survive," came on as I was running, and I thought, right, this is the song I used to get over someone (else) long ago, but then my boyfriend BURST into my consciousness saying, "NO! It's ME!!! I survived death!! I'm still here!!" It was so much him, I just can't describe that certain energy each person has. Anyway, he conveyed to me his shock when he saw his body bleeding out. I urged him to go to the light. He used 2 more songs: Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time," and Blondie's "Dreaming" -- with the last, he asked if he could come to me in my dreams. I was bawling as I ran and said, of course, sweetheart! So for 2 weeks, I dreamed about him every night and learned feelings he'd had during the relationship, not all good but lots of love. We said goodbye in a dream, as we never got to here. . By contrast, my mom died in August at 97 after she stopped eating intentionally, and she was just OUTTA here. I got only one tiny message from her: Bliss, and "I should have done this a long time ago!" She was too excited to hang out and communicate any more.
I hope some of this helps you. Remember, grief is the flipside of love. We never get one without the other -- unless we go first. ❤

This is a comment only on the title and and tenor of this. I believe - and it would appear that - religion has nothing to do with NDEs. An Atheist is not going to be excluded from having a near death experience - not even a "rabid atheist". I think these experiences are consummately personal and if someone has a religious epiphany during a NDE, that's wonderful. Every person should wholly own what they come away with during this extraordinary experience. I just hope that we - the collective we - don't start equating NDEs or other altered states of consciousness as exclusive to those subscribing to some manner of organized religion.

@@red-eye-traveller9218 Some say they meet an authority figure, some say a Being of Love, some say Jesus or Moses, some a family member, some an orb of light. Some have a sense if revelation that there is no authority figure, no hierarchy, but instead feel a oneness, a lack of judgment, a sense of being worthy in a perfect universe.
What people experience seems to be informed by and filtered through their previous beliefs. Some Christians return saying they were taught that their religion is mistaken. Some atheists return saying they met Jesus or Mary. My brother, a fundamentalist Christian says that everyone sees Jesus during NDEs. If reminded that some people instead see an orb of light, a family member, an angel, or no one in particular, he says "That's right! That's Jesus! They just don't know it yet." Umm...okay. I'm pretty sure his assumptions are based more on what he wants to be true than on people's actual interpretations of their own NDEs.

The first time Im actually publicly talking about my experience and I believe this video explains much better than I could what such an experience feels like: I got an NDE a bit more than 3 years ago (Not a very spectacular one, but definitely made a change in my life) I was an athiest, but have since my experience been more spiritual. I still don't believe in a typical God most people believe but more the way that this person explains it is. Just before surgery for Ulcerative Colitis I developed Toxic Megacolon which was getting so swollen they had to take it out. After this surgery I developed an internal hernia when my remaining small intestine decided to turn on itself and caused a complete blockage, I could literally not breath anymore after some days (I don't remember it well anymore because of the excruciating pain and able to breath less and less) as my abdomen was so inflated all my other organs were being pushed away, and I went out completely just before I was rolled in to the surgery for the 2nd time as it was slowly becoming an emergency. Everything went black and then I came into a black tunnel with a white and extremely peaceful light at the end, it was so peaceful I loved it. At that same moment (in my mind this happened at the exact same time as the tunnel) I had an out of body experience, I saw myself being wheeled into the surgery room while doctors where trying pushing on my abdomen, but at the same time I knew my eyes didn't work anymore and I was still in the tunnel at the same time... real strange. When I focussed on the tunnel the pain was gone so I did that but I could still hear things that were said by all the doctors. I was at peace at that time but still sad to leave my family with this ordeal. While thinking about that my family would be said and would leave my wife with all the undone things in my lif3 I felt I was pushed back into my body as if a force come over my chest and woke up just before surgery started on the table and I remember they connected me and told me I will now get urgent surgery. After 11 hours of surgery I woke up and my life changed completely. I have struggled with this a lot, even got depressed a lot and God what more but all in all I kept thinking more and more about that moment and made me realize that indeed this life is just a play. This experience the man had was much more spectacular as what I experienced maybe happened in a minute or something. It was very quick indeed. I also did not obtain much knowledge there, just intense peace and knowing that it is good and that there is indeed no need to worry about dying. Because it will be absolute miraculous.

The word angel in Greek means "messenger," which indicates an angel's role in many biblical passages. For example, Gabriel visited Mary with a message of the birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38)

The chalkboard figures could have been the people around her trying to revive her, which would make sense that they were asking her how many fingers they were holding up and what her name was. If she saw them as chalkboard figures who were spouting nonsensical sayings, that would suggest that she was indeed high, again hinting at a k-hole from ketamine.

It is common sense to feel confused when we hear "we're not separate". Our usual experience is, as we know, to feel separate. And the more agitated our thoughts and emotions are, the more separated we feel. Even absolutely isolated, which ends up being pathological.
But, as we know, there are also occasional moments of certain mental quietness when one feels connected to, and affected by, what one has arround. Some people would say that the first state of mind is an alienated one, and this second an state more in keeping with our deepest nature. Is it because, deep down, our mind, our being, our consciousness conforms a unity with all which is? Most NDErs, and all the mystics that have ever existed around the world, would answer: yes. But most of us don't know for sure. So, if that statement resonates within us, we ask to ourselves: Is that true? And we may begin a journey into the nature of our minds as human beings. Thinking for ourselves, but not in isolation. Listening, talking, questioning, watching...

    • @cbchang6200

Dear CaptMorgan, my spiritual awakening came from science and quantum physics. In 7th grade science class my teacher stated that nothing is truly solid, we do not live in a solid world. It only appears solid with our extremely limited 5 human senses. However, everything is made from atoms, which an atom is 99.9999% empty space. Meaning the building blocks of the so-called physical world is not even solid. Science has proven that a human being can only detect about 0.035% of what is actually surrounding that human. I say all this to say, so many people say if they cannot see it, they don't believe it. When that person can only see approximately 0.04% of what is there. You say you "attempt to debunk". If you are attempting to debunk using only your 5 human senses, you are discounting 99.96% of reality. I never had a NDE, however, I did have a hallucination when I was in the ER. It was easy for me to know an hallucination or dream from an NDE. Most NDEers describe what they are experiencing as feeling much more REAL than this so-call physical world we live in. Thank you for your question. Much Love & Appreciation, Caroline🌹🙏💖

    • @captmorgan101472
      @captmorgan101472 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@cbchang6200 Anyone who says if they can't see it, they don't believe it, needs to read more. It should be obvious that there is much more to reality than what are 5 senses can detect.
We use our understanding of science and build instruments to experience things our physical senses can not. We learn more and keep exploring.
We now understand why matter appears to be solid, even though what it's made of is mostly empty. Electrons repelling other electrons. Using just our physical senses, we could never have learned this. So this brings me to why I always attempt to debunk. Far too many people are quick to call an experience supernatural when there are other explanations that haven't been explored. You see this all the time with paranormal investigators. I'm just suggesting that people should pump the brakes and think about what it is they might be experiencing.

I’m an atheist. All an atheist is, is someone who doesn’t believe in god/gods, or says that there is no god. I see and hear and feel spirits. I’ve had out of body experiences where I’ve met non-physical beings. Still, I can confidently say that there is no god.

Dear @KARIS1961, Many mistake the term "God" for what many religions have made of this word. In many religions, man has mad God into Man's Image, not the other way around. The True meaning of God is NOT that at all. From your own description, I would say you are Spiritual, not religious. Many spiritual people understand that God is not as many religions teach. God is Unconditional LOVE. I am sure you believe in LOVE. God is LOVE, God is Source, God is the Universe, God is ALL THAT IS. We are all ONE with God, no matter what a person's religion or beliefs. There is no separation from God and everyone and everything. We are all ONE with God ALWAYS. Ancient Wisdom, Spirituality, and Quantum Physics all teach this Universal Truth of Oneness, also known as the Law of One. Thank you for sharing your perspective. Dear Stevo5000, Thank you for your comment. You are 100% Correct! There are so many NDE experiences that are so uniquely difference. I do kind of believe we might see who we believe in, in our NDE experience. Therefore, a Christian may see Jesus, a Muslin may see Allah, a Buddhist may see Buddha, and so forth. Many NDE's just speak of seeing a bright white light and maybe loved ones in spirit. Every NDE experience is uniquely difference, even though there may be some similar in the experiences, they are ALL Unique. Thank you for sharing your comments. Much Love & Appreciation, Caroline🌹🙏💖

You had a drug induced experience. Even if your heart stopped your brain was active. Even if it wasnt, who says this didnt happen just before you revived.
Not to detract from the experience. Ive had drug induced experiences which were profound and uncanny. A lot of NDE features are replicated in, say, a DMT trip. Does that make it real? Sure. What is real? Who is to say reality is anything to the individual but what the brain perceives. Does life continue after death? Maybe, but you know one thing every NDEer shares (and pretty much the only thing they share) is that they didn't die. They nearly died and that's got to be taken into account.
The fact that every NDE is so different with these commonalities like rebirth through a tunnel into light, the life review etc. Doesnt really prove anything except that certain human experiences (the memory of birth maybe?) Occur. Otherwise every story is different. So either everyone is lying (I doubt it) or everyone interprets the process in subtly different ways based on their exposures to culture. In your case you had a hedonistic experience and found the love you craved. Hardly difficult to see why given your personality at the time.
Still, these experiences are life changing and usually for the better. Glad you got out of that self destructive spiral and grew up.

    • @IANDSvideos
      @IANDSvideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dear NL, if every person's life experience is uniquely difference, why would you expect everyone's transition/death experience to be the same? Just like everyone has different and unique perspectives about life, each will have unique and different perspectives when transitioning. The proof that life is eternal is overwhelming. However, everyone can believe what resonates as true for them. Much Love & Appreciation🌹🙏💖

Atheism requirement is just the lack of belief in deities (a god, gods). You can be an atheist, fly among ghosts, have OBEs, etc. and remain atheist as long as you didn't encounter evidence of gods.
You can be an atheist and be spiritual. I am. NDEs therefore become theist is not a true correlation.
