How exactly did this work? Did Imhotep just hypnotize all these people to be his slaves? Or did he actually kill all of them and make him his servants? That would explain why some of their faces look messed up?

From what I understand the Hom Dai (the curse Imhotep was punished with), gives him power of manipulation amongst several other things like immortality etc
